Melrose High School Student Government is composed of several different, independent organi- zations which work on basically the same issues and problems concerning school affairs. The Student Council is made up of the class officers of each class. This year ' s Senior Class officers, who traditionally provide the leadership for the rest of the council, have been very active raising funds and making decisions concerning class activities. The Student Congress is composed of repre- sentatives and alternates elected from each homeroom. They met several times concerning G- block, Class Night, class dues, and cap and gowns. The Student Faculty Advisory Board is composed of three elected members and two alternates from each class, a faculty member from each depart- nent, and a representative each from administration and guidance. SFAB investigates issues and •ecommends courses of action. We come not to be governed, but to govern. SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS First Row: C. Brown, Advisor; A. Dolan, Class Representative; S. DEBATE TEAM Debating, which has brought Melrose High national honors since 1960, reached a new apogee of ac- tivity during 1973-74. The team broke all previous records for the number of contests in which they com- peted, well over 700, and the number of trophies they won. Eighteen two-man teams competed again from Orono, Maine to Washington, D.C. As the defending New England champions, they debated the national topic, which was Guaranteed Annual Income. Their excellent record showed every indication that the club ' s traditions would endure for years to come. Kneeling: P. Pendleton, C. Diana, L. Muise, M. Rice, K. Malm. Standing: ). Rice, F. Now the earth was without form and void, and the Spirit of the Great Moose hovered over the face of the waters. And He said: Let there be Theater. And there was Theater. And the Great Moose saw the The- ater, that it was good. And it came to pass that the Great Moose saw that the peoples of the earth were neglecting the Theater that He had made. And He sent down unto them His Son, the Albino Moose, to redeem the people and lead them back to the stage. And, behold, the Albino Moose saved all of the people, even those from Melrose. And His disciples, Diane Marcotti, Hugh Metzler, Sharon Fogarty, and Maureen Shea, led the Drama Society of Melrose with the help of Michael Glynn, back to the stage. And to praise and honor the Albino Moose, Melrose entered Peter Ustinov ' s Halfway Up the Tree in the Regional High School Drama Guild Festival, and it was good. Savage, I. Matteucci, A. Maskell, L. PAL CLUB Once upon a time, a school had a service club. This club ' s name was Pal because it was a friend to the community. The members helped the children in schools, tutored and served dinners with the Meals on Wheels program. And the members helped at school activities by having concession stands at the plays and other productions. Some of the Pal members were Big Brothers and Big Sisters to children who needed some love and understanding. Once a week they would take them out and just be friends. They were very nice and had a Christmas party for the little boys and girls they befriended. Why did Santa have a square stomach? And they lived happily ever after because they were good people. MAJORETTES If you want to be a majorette — CHEERS!! Despite its lack of experience, the squad, headed by Debbie Dow and Louisa Bowe, provided excellent half-time and pre-game entertainment as a result of hours of dedicated practice. The squad will never forget the Satur- day morning practices, Friday routines, the bus rides, and the brunches. It was a first for crying in the cold, and frequent visits to the court yard. Hockey and Basketball kept us on the move, Call down the line and don ' t be late. Painting signs, catching colds, cheering fight, score, win! ' For two teams that were really great. SOCCER The soccer team, co-captained by Ron Armstrong and Bill Mulvihill, had a fairly good, but somewhat disappointing season, ending with a 7-8-1 record. This final record was somewhat deceiving, in that six of the eight losses were by a 2-1 margin. The most sensational game was the win over Wakefield, in which the goal tending was superb. Among the team records broken were most goals in a season, most shutouts, and most points in a season. This year the Melrose Wrestling Team continued its dominance in the Middlesex League. Led by seniors Steve LoPilato, Bill Mulvihill, Jay Hickey, P. Schluntz, and Bill Fogarty, the team has had great success. Their most enjoyable moments were “feedbagging after weigh-ins and they all remember cutting weight in the tropical wrestling room with Coach Bill. I’m telling you, Fogarty. WINTER TRACK The winter track runners had another fine season, finishing with a 7-2 record. Wakefield and Reading were the only teams to drop Melrose, but the lack of practising facilities and bad weather may have been a deciding factor in those meets. Co-captains John Tsoukalas and Ed Ferreira had fine seasons, along with se- niors Bryan Porter, and Dan Gunnery, and juniors Hal Moulton and Ken Driver. Melrose made their finest showing in the State Meet in recent history, placing third in Class B. On the whole, it was a good season for Coach McIntyre and the Raiders despite the two losses in league competition. First Row: P. Babin, D. Silva, D. Barry, B. Wenner, A. Maccario, C. Reedy, J. SWIMMING The M.H.S. swim team, under the capable handling of Coach Robert Grant, put together its foudh cham- pionship season in five years. A new scoring system, which seemingly favored the larger teams with larger pools, proved to be a plus for the swimmers as they used it to their advantage and easily defeated their opposition. Led by Co-captains Ken Caiazzo and Dick Catania, they edged the Voke by a point, and then soundly defeated Charlestown and Malden. With record setting perform- ances by Charles Gill and the fine jobs done by Alice Barber, Scott Hayward, Steve Justice and Dan Glynn, the team looks forward to an even stronger season next year. BASKETBALL Led by tri-captains Paul Barrett, Ron LaVita, and john Slat- tery, the basketball team figured to be one of the top con- tenders for the number one spot in the Middlesex League. Subs Ken Pulsford, Bill Ball, and Steve LeSaffre added that im- portant bench strength which is essential in keeping team spirit up. The fine rebounding and scoring of John Slattery, the ex- cellent passing and shooting of Paul Barrett, and the tremendous rebounding ability and defense of Ron LaVita aided in outplaying many of the top teams and players in the league. Ken Pulsford was very valuable in his role as a backup for- ward, and Bill Ball and Steve LeSaffre had that desire and hustle necessary for a winning team. Juniors Don Chiuve and Bill Killilea helped the team tremendously and should excel even more next year. Overall, it was a very satisfying year for the cagers. GYMNASTICS The girls ' gymnastics team, in its fourth year of competition, completed a winning 1973-1974 season with a 5-4 record. Captain Meredith Bruno felt that this team was the best in M.H.S. history as far as team improvement and spirit. Outstanding contributions were made by Sally Hoague, a first year vaulter, and Louisa Bowe, a senior vaulter. Both of these girls represented Melrose in the State Individual Meet at Burlington. With their strong first line of Captain Dennis Hughes, Brian Hughes and Daryl MacLeod, they exhibited some good, fast hockey playing. Along with the second line of Don Healey, Mike O ' Hara and Ted Baier, they were aided with a couple of very talented defensemen in Jim DeYoung and Chuck Tryder. Under second year Coach Bob McIntyre, the Harriers finished a strong second place with 8 wins and 1 loss, in the Middlesex League Competition. Powerful Wakefield, last year ' s state champion, was the only team to knock the Harriers off stride, but this loss was avenged by an upset League meet victory for Melrose. Captains John Tsoukalas and Larry Baldwin and Sopho mores Tony Maccarrio and Bruce Wenner gave the team a speedy top four with Neil Hannaford and Ed Ferreira rounding out the top six. In state competition, at Franklin Park, the team placed second in their class and seventh overall, thus ending a memorable season for the M.H.S. Cross Country runners.
