MASS We, the staff of the 1958 Log, dedicate our yearbook to Mr. Stanley A. Battles 4 After graduating from Clark University and receiving his masters degree from Harvard, Mr. Battles taught in Lexing- ton and Medford before coming to Mel- rose High School in 1930 as head of the Math Department. Many of us will remember his math classes in the years to come and will thank him for teach- ing us so well. Mr. Battles has distinguished himself in the service of his country and is re- spected and admired by all who know him. He fought with the 101st Infantry Division in France during World War I and upon his return to Melrose, he was elected to the position of Post Comman- der of the Melrose Legion Post 90. He has also worked diligently with the staff of the Imprint for many years. His welcome help and genuine interest have played an important part in the success of our school newspaper. This dedication can represent only a small portion of the esteem our class holds for Mr. Battles and for his contributions to the fulfillment of our dreams and plans for the future. 5 TABLE OF CONTENTS Faculty page 7 Seniors page 17 Underclassmen page 63 Activities page 67 Athletics page 89 Advertisements page 111 Our teachers have given us the materials with which to build a strong foundation and the courage to cross the bridge from dreams to reality. GIRLS’ CLUB The purpose of the Melrose High School Girls ' Club is to unite the girls of the school in a stronger bond of friendship, and to instill in them This familiar and meaningful objective is heard ringing through the auditorium each Monday night of the school year. The high ideals in the purpose are carried out under the guidance of Mac, the club ' s advisor and founder, the officers, and the girls themselves. Each week, under the leadership of Carol Conrey, the Program Committee presents the club with fine, entertain- ing, and inspirational meetings. As another part of its program the Committee helped a deserving Melrose family at Christmas. Yes! is the war cry of the M. H. S. cheerleaders. Led by Captain Judy Putney, the girls could be heard cheering the team on; win or lose, rain or shine. In the fall, the squad marched on the football field and led crowds of enthusiastic Melrose fans in resounding cheers. Later in the year, they rode with the teams to Boston Arena to watch the smooth, sure skating of the M. H. S. six, and to neighboring cities to bring spirit to the exciting basketball games. The Melrose Red Raiders, this year, took third place in the strong, well-bal- anced Middlesex League. Although they did not do as well as was expected, they turned in the best record at Melrose in three years, compiling a record of four wins and five losses. Their best perform- ance was turned in against the old Mel- rose nemesis Winchester, where minus the services of many players because of the flu, they came out on the short end of a close 20-18 score. Hit by costly injuries and bouts with the flu, the team showed remarkable spirit throughout the season, with Co- captains David Rogers and Robert White- house doing a magnificent job in pre- serving that spirit. Congratulations are due Coach Walsh and his staff for doing a fine job in coaching the team. Co-captains David Rogers and Robert Whitehouse. The coaches: J. Driscoll; Head coach J. Walsh; R. CROSS COUNTRY The Cross Country Team, under the able leadership of Doc Clark, gained new emphasis in the world of sports at Melrose High School, this year. After compiling a record of eight wins and two losses, the Harriers took fourth place in the Middlesex League Championships held at Tufts College on October 25. Juniors James Kristiansen and Mark Smith sparked the team to a third place position in Class B at the State Championships. Smith and Kristiansen were nobly aided by Captain Queeney, Thomas McGrail, David Crosby, and David Bud- dington. Losing only two lettermen, it looks like another fine team next year. Under the expert coaching of Miss LaPlace, the team played five games. They started the season by tying Malden in a no-score game and continued on to defeat Stoneham and play three very close games against Swampscott, Winchester and Arlington. Shiela Taylor, Gail Taylor, Barbara Tate, and Janice Alvarez, senior members of the team, alternated as goalies and captains. The under- classmen, who also alternated positions, were Judy Warren, Linda Clarke, Jean Hunt, Ann LaSaffre, Julea Fogg, Ann Goodridge, Marilyn Graf, Joan Bagenstose, Linda Lane, and Sally Robinson. The Concord game proved a high spot, with returning Bob Goodwin scoring thirty-nine points. Despite this great ettort our boys couldn ' t pull the game out of the fire. Another peak was reached at the last game of the season with Stoneham, where Goodwin again broke thirty. The future, however, looks brighter, due to the surplus of underclassmen on the squad. Only three of these games were to be played on home ground. The captain of the varsity was Barbara Tate, and the junior varsity was under the able direction of Linda Clark. Although Jim Dunton placed third in the shot put and Jim Kristiansen fifth in the 1000 yard run in the State Championships, the team was unable to win places in either the Fargo, Y.M.C.A. or B.A.A. meets for lack of experience. Only three dual meets were run off, due to a lack of league competition. Melrose lost to Belmont by a mere five points and lost again to Needham.
