Don Cornett, about to board the transport ship MAURICE ROSE, three months before he was killed in Vietnam in November 1965. ur MelHi classmate, US Army Znd Lt. flnfantryj Donald Cornett was killed in Vietnam at the infamous Battle of Ia Drang Valley at Landing Zone ILZJ Albany The Battle of Ia Drang Valley has been memorialized in the book - which became the Mel Gibson movie - We Were Soldiers Then...and Young, by Lt. Gen. Harold G. Moore fRet.J, the U.S. commander at LZ X-Ray and U.S. News Senior Writer joseph L. Galloway who as a reporter for United Press International was present throughout the fight at X-Ray From the book comes a chilling account of the lesser-known second part of the battle, the desperate encounter at LZ Albany - the deadliest one- day battle of the Vietnam War. Excerpt: As dawn broke over Landing Zone Albany on Thursday November 18, the Americans began slowly expanding their perimeter, moving out into the woods. The battlefield was silent now. For Pat Payne of the Reconnaissance Platoon, shock set in when the searchers returned with the body of Lt. Don Cornett, the much loved executive officer of Charlie Company His face was truned to the side, Payne remembers. He looked like he was asleep. A helicopter landed and stirred the wind. Cornett's hair blew in the breeze and it was beyond my comprehension that such a wonderful person had been killed. Photo courtesy .lim Lawrence, a friend of Don's in Vietnam.
