THE 1956 BULLDOGS The glorious reign of MHS football squads knows no end. This year's powerful unit continued to inflict the mighty stab of victory, winning nine and losing one. After a disappointing start, the Bulldogs came back to haunt pre-season QB's who dared say they couldn't continue to amaze the OBC, or tie as they did in '54, or cop the flag as they did in '55. But, the miraculous squadders proved their determination. Forgetting the 20-0 first game whitewash, the Canine unit proved deadly on the gridiron by mowing each of the nine teams thereafter, and by earning a post season chance in the Brahman Bowl Classic. Posting a clean 6-O slate in the OBC and copping the county flag, the bulldogs held the rough Seabreeze Sand Crabs to a 0-0 Bowl deadlock. How did Coach Gi1lespie's crew purchase these honors? Captain Carl Meyer, flashy senior quarterback, takes a lionis share of post-season bragging. Thundering Carl Morin, the best blocking back in the OBC, Bob Meyer, powerful junior, lanky Bill Stroud, and down the list of top performers, that's the reason the Bulldogs were tough. Carl Meyer zipped and zagged by every foe, and was the only unanimous choice on the All-County line-up, the starting OBC quarterback, and honorable mention in almost every other best team eleven. Bill Stroud, Bob Meyer, Barney Corbin, Richard Cassady, Eddie Laibl, Jim Shuck, Carl Morin, Bill Archer, Gary Maris, all collected honors on the All- County and All-Conference array of grid stars. The defense was tops, the offense murderous, the passing superb, the blocking won- derful. The Bulldog reign of terror is expected to continue for many seasons with many promising performers returning next year.
