With this edition of the 1956 Mel-Hi, which celebrates the opening of the new school, we cannot but wish to recognize the person who has done so much for the old school and continues to do so much for the new. A Her time and talents have been given to Melbourne High School for many years. We would, therefore, like to make this dedication in thanks to her. She has served as teacher, Principal, and Assistant Principal, but regardless of title, Mrs. Ruth Henegar still remains. . . . . . . . Mrs. Mel- bourne High School. EDITOR'S MESSAGE We, on the annual staff, give you this, the 1956 Mel-Hi, for your enjoyment and approval. We hope that it meets every expectation you had and even goes a little beyond. Don't ever forget that your school years are your best years. With this in mind, we tried to cover all the highpoints of the year so that you will never forget the best years of your life. We endeavored to make this yearbook a little different in all respects to better remind you of your school days. The Editor and Staff would like to express their appreciation to all the people that helped them in so many ways. In closing, we would like to say that we hope you enjoy this annual and our sincere best wishes go to the graduating Seniors, to whom an annual is a priceless possession. :CSM E Z Cf 5 cn P-I 'De E Dev-I i'11P U5 UO P-IZCO F11 P-IZ U3 Advisor ----- - - - MARTIN SCHOPPMEYER Editor-in-Chief - - --------- TOM BASS Associate Editor - - Art Editor ---- Business Manager Layout ----- Literary Editor - Organizations - - Photographer - - Snapshots ---- Sports Editors - - - - BETTE BROWN - - MARY IACOBUS - - -HARRY GOODE ' ' .TEANEL FORDYCE - - SALLY PIGMAN - - MARY BURTON ' - RICK ESBENSON - - - MARCIA HOSKINS - - - CHUCK PIERSON HM PLATT ADMINISTRATION FACULTY SENIORS .TUNIORS SOP HOMORES FRESHMEN FAVORITES CALENDAR AC TIVITIES SPORT S AD VERTISEMENTS 6 L 5 J -asm E N 4 I Zlfl--DFID-ILH-Z-ZCDP PRINCIPADS MESSAGE T0 THE GRADUATING CLASS OE 1956 As you Seniors launch your new careers with eager and exciting antic- ipation, those of us remaining behind cannot escape a trace of sad- ness over your Commencement, And yet, we feel a tremendous burst of pride - for in you lie all of our hopes and aspirations for a bright new tomorrow. We hope you will remember that the royal road to success would have more travelers were not so many lost while attempting to find short cuts. Most men seem to fail through lack of direction rather than lack of ability. Never forget that while a man may be better than his reputation, he is never better than his principles. The poor man is not the man without a cent but the man without a dream. . Z, i 1 MRS. HELEN DORMAN Secretary MRS. They were then informed that they would have to produce the biggest and best Annual commemorating Mel- boume High, The staff was then placed under the direction of Mr. Martin Schoppmeyer and Editor Tom Bass, who locked them in a storm cellar, from whence issued occasional reports of progress and pleas for air, After the chains were removed from the door, the staff members slowly emerged gaunt and sere with several pages of copy clutched in their ink-stained fists, After these were forcibly removed from their grasp, they were first studied by several Anthropologists and then sent to the printers. A force for freedom as old as life itself, which will emerge with vividness from the complexities of our times. Not only life, but freedom itself must find regeneration from youth. ln every generation, youth presses for this achleivement. Each generation has the right to build its own world with the materials of the past, cemented by the hopes of the future. p Older men declare war, but it is youth that must fight and die. And it is youth who must inherit the tribulations, sorrow, and triumphs that are the aftermath of war. Youth can bring the courage, the ideals, and confidence which can erect a new society in America. You have a great heritage. You are receiving and finding homes built by your forebearers, but you have an even greater heritageg that isthe heritage of religious faith and morals. There is no problem which confronts our country that you can not solve within the frame-work. We know you will carry forward. We wish you to carry it with the dauntless assurance of your forebearers who faced the chill of the ocean, the danger of the forrest and deserts, the lon-liness of the pioneer days to build upon this continent a dedication to justice and liberty for the dignity of the individual man. Watch over it vigilantly, guard it, protect it from foes within and withoutg make for it a sanctuary and dedicate it to God and all man-kind. C .H.
