ffzslvry In the Year of 1952 a group of 112 students from the Mergs County grade schools gathered together to embark upon the first lap of their Journey over the rough seas of hlgh school in therr Shrp of Knowledge Durrng the frrst month of thrs year the Freshmen suffered much inconvenrence because of therr unfamllianty wrth the new ship and its rules They were for ever takrng the wrong turns frndmg themselves on the wrong deck and arrrvrng at therr classroom half an hour late Ernest lollay was elected captarn of the group of adventurers and Mr D B Powell and Mrs Rachel Culvahouse were chosen as sponsors Durrng the year the captarn transferred to Whltwell High School and Bruce Norton was elected to frll the vacancy and act as captarn for the remainder of the Journey By the end of the year twenty two of the class members had abandoned the shrp because other thrngs called louder than school acuvrtres or because the course of study became too hard Wrth the comrng of the next August a group of 87 assembled to make the second lap of the Journey They were grverr the name of Sophomores and were transferred to the Sophomore Cabin The shrp s routrne was now fam1l1ar and they found studying easrer than before Barbara Gregory was chosen as captain for the tnp thrs year and the journey was lrvened wrrh class partres and ball games where many of the class members were becomrng basketball and foot ball players The gain was almost as much as the loss th1s year Wayne Camp bell Hazel Allen Lulu Evans Clayton Jackson Brllre Jean Mrller Mary Sue Monroe and l-Iaskel Ramsey Jorned the class whrle eleven were lost Trme passed and they were agarn slufted T.h1S ume to the Junror Cabrn They now had '75 Jolly Iumors and Johnny Powell was elected as captain Th1s was a year of hard work and the dreaded ordeal of examrnatrons was passed wrth few casualtres The teachers had endeared themselves to the hearts of the class and there was a feeling of genuine frrendshrp throughout the ship Every one enjoyed stops at such famous ports as the Junror Senror Banquet and the Junior Play Many side trrps were made to the ball games where the players who were outstandrng in the Sophomore year were now becomlng stars on the team Chester Johnson Jorned the class for the remamder of the trrp thrs year wh1le srx members were lost ln July 1955 64 drgrufled Seruors were starting on the fourth and greatest lap of therr Journey They were transferred to the Senror Cabrn with increased pnvlleges and responsrbrlrtres Dan Layman was elected as captarn and hrs help ers were Bruce Armour Frrst mate Qvrce presrdentj Carol Herd Second mate Qsecretaryj Barbara Gregory Third mateqtreasurerj Bruce Norton Fourth mate Qreporterj and Celra Jean Roberts sh1p representatrve Mrss Hazel Layman and Mr W T l-lawkrns were the sponsors for the class Black and whrte sarls were chosen to dot the skres and the aroma of yellow roses frlled the ballroom of the shrp The number was again decreased when three of the class members went elsewhere to seek therr fortunes Q .,, .
