HISTORY In the year of 1951 a group of 51 young people from the grade schools of Mergs county met for a trrp through Mergs High School They had gathered together a large amount of baggage rn the form of a bunch of dates fresh from the tree of Hrstory sectrons ofAr1thmet1c and even a supply of grammar Each person had the requlred trcket a certrfrcate of promotron from the last statron the Erghth Grade Promptly at the stroke of 8 30 the group answered the Conductor s call of all aboard Yes before they knew it they were started ont therr trip rn the Tram of Knowledge They were grven seats rn the Freshman sectron whrch was equrpped wrth a frne dinrng car where capable Chefs better known as teachers supplred everyone wrth food of mental growth Bobby Nelson was elected presrdent of the group and Mrs I R. Herfner and Mr Herman Woody served as sponsors By the end of the year 19 of the class members had abandoned the trip and gone elsewhere to seek thelr fortunes At the end of the frrst year havmg successfully met the requrre ments of Freshman passengers they were transferred to the Sophomore car and wtth a membersh1p of 32 they bravely endured the Joltrng of the rougher travel Pat Buttram was chosen presrdent for the mp thrs year and the Journey was hvened by class partres and ballgames Pranks were frequently played when the Conductor or prrncrpal was lookrng after the other sectrons of the train The garn was greater than the loss thrs year Margre Ereckson Lester Denton and Frank Mattson Jomed the class whrle only two were lost Trme passed and they were agarn shrfted thrs trme to the Junror Coach They now had 31 jolly members and passengers Clyde Harmon was elected presrdent Every member enroyed stops at pleasure Resorts tncludrng the Junror Senror Banquet and the Iunror Play Stde trrps to the athletrc freld where numerous passengers became outstandrng rn basketball and football played an rmportant part also The mental food became harder to chew and drgest but when the Faculty Chefs urged them on the Iumors nobly d1d therr duty Carl Sturgrll Jorned the group for the remarnder of the trrp thts year Then came the happy day when the group of 35 was transferred to the Semor Coach wrth rncreased prrvrleges and responsrbrlrtles wrth Edward Guffee as class presrdent Hrs helpers were Lester Denton Vrce Presrdent Joyce Hrpps secretary Carl Sturgtll treasurer Jane A y 1 . , . PROPHECY Havrng just arrrved In 1970 In my home town of Decatur from my Texas cattle ranch I went to the hotel to rest from my long trrp Before I entered the hotel I saw the name of the hotel Guffee Hotel I thought the name sounded famrlrar and when I went rn I was more sure of rt because the Manager was none other than EDWARD GUFFEE I talked wtth hrm awhrle and learned that he was marrled and had four chrldren I was more surprrsed than ever when the Porter came to take my bags because lo II was WAYNE POWELL' The next mormng I awoke wrth a slrghr headache Thrnkrng 1 mtght be takrng a cold I went down to the nurse JOYCE MATTSON former JOYCE HIPPS asked whtch doctor Ipreferred Doctor PAT BUTTRAM or Doctor R H NELSON After havrng the check up I was leavrng the hosprtal ready to start lookrng up my classmates when rrght In front of me was a couple leavtng wrth twrns When I was close enough to see thcrr faces I nearly lost my balance because rt was another of my former classmates CAROLE FINNELL wtth her husband Tommy and chrldren Next I went to v1s1t BOBBIE WHITE the former BOBBIE NELSON whrch I had been keeprng In contact wrth durrng these 15 years we had been separated After she got a baby srtter for her two chrldren she was ready to go along wrth me on the rest of my vtsrts Frrst we vrslted Metgs Consoltdated Htgh School the school we had graduated from When the prrncrpal CLYDE HARMON welcom ed us to the school I could have falnted from shock because he was the last person I had expected to be a prrnclpal Upon vrsrttng the other rooms I found out some new teachers had been makrng progress throughout the years ELIZABETH HALE was teachrng Commercral subjects and dorng a fme job of II MAPJORIE ERECKSON was teach mg Phys Ed and seemed tnterestcd tn the enttre group LESTER DENTON was the boys coach and belreve me he was really makrng pregress with the team' And last but not least was BILLY HHJPS now teachlng Hrstory Next we set out for the Superrntendent s offrce because Bobble had just Informed me that BILLY MASON held the offrce now, wtth JANE LEWIS as hrs secretary 1 1 Q 11 , . 1 ,. , . 1 1 , 1 . f 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 ' 1 1 1 1 - 1 . 1 . . , . .
