With this book as an album of memories, the l95l REFLECTOR Staff hopes you will find occasion for happiness in retrospect as you review those carefree days. Remember raising the rafters at those bas- ketball gamesg those dreaded final exams: the tantalizing aroma of sulphur escaping from chem classy that certain date for the prom: the excitement of facing the footlightsy and those tears of both joy and sorrow upon the arrival of that long-awaited day of graduation? The shifting sands of time cannot erase those cherished memories you will recall as you reminisce with each following page. -a-U-'I i Page T11 rm' U Q c 1 'Y' M' 'W 3v 0 L A vigorous, growing school system is the living proof of a pro- gressive, dynamic community. On fanuary 27, l95l, the citizens of Mehlville approved, by a substantial margin, a 3208000 bond issue to finance the building program, now in progress. Although not designed to bring expansion to the Senior High School, the building program will provide for a new cafeteria and several new junior high classrooms at the south end of the High School, in addition to other improvements at Forder School for the elementary grades. The nation is becoming more aware of the importance of ade- quate education in these troubled times. The need for educational improvement is mounting with each passing year. The task of expanding the physical facilities of the schools demands immediate attention. It is gratifying to know that the citizens of this district have responded to that urgent need. To those who build for Americas tomorrowg to those who reply to need with actionp to the citizens of the School District of Mehlville, this l95l REFLECTOR is humbly dedicated. B1-:'uza'zcl Principal Bierhenni His friendly approach is his secret weaponf' his great respect for the dignity of others is his mode of gaining respect from others: his methodical endeavors underscore his efficiency. Mr. K. O. Bierbaum, principal of Mehlville High School, through his firm yet friendly guidance, has earned the respect and loyalty of students and adults with whom he has dealings. After graduating from McKendree College, Mr. Bierbaum received his master's degree from Washington University. Mr. Bierbaum origin- ally taught science and mathematics classes, but his present duties as principal occupy all of his time. However, this pre-occupation with administrative duties does not prevent him from attending basketball games, where he is a regular in attendance. He also serves as business adviser for the REFLECTOR. Superintendent Bernard If quality and quantity of service, degree of sincerity, and extent of devotion to one's chosen life-work are true criteria of success in life, then Meh1vi1le's Superintendent Emil H. C. Bernard has ct goodly store of it. His impressive record of 38 years of service to the community seems remarkable. He was a teacher in past years. He later combined classroom and administra- tive duties, serving as teacher, principal, and superintendent at one time in his career. He has truly eamed the respect of his community in terms of service rendered. Mr. Bernard has attended Perkinson-Herple Commercial College, Southeast Missouri State College, and Missouri University. From the latter he received his bachelor's degree. He has done post-graduate work at Washington University. Combining his rich background of exper- ience, his natural ability to make friends, and his innate ability to become a part of any situa- tion, Mr. Bernard goes efficiently about his duties as chief administrator of a growing, ex- panding school district. As the years roll by, he adds to his store of experience, knowledge, and good will. allffz. She earned her degree at Ohio State University. ln addition to her teaching duties. Mrs. Vtfelty supervises the library, spon- sors the French Club, and co-sponsors the junior class. She taught in Dela- ware, Ohio, Colorado, Louisiana, and St. Louis fCleveland High Schooll before coming to Mehlville. The obiect ot Masque and Gavel is to recognize and promote significant student achievement in the speech or dramatics field. Students who apply for membership must show superior ability in speech, dramatics, or debate. Members were initiated at a meeting de- signed by the local chapter. New members received membership cards and pins at the installation meeting held in February. The only charter member held over from last year was Sondra Peterson. Climax ot the year's speech activ- ities is the oratorical contest, held in con- junction with the nationwide contests spon' sored by the American Legion. Each student wrote an oration, based upon some phase of the U. S. Constitution. Eliminations were held, and eight winners were chosen to participate in the local contest, held as a high school assembly program. On the last Friday of each month the club meets, opening with a regular business meeting fol- lowed by special oral reports, movies, and folk songs to further the study of the language and customs of the French people. First hour Carolyn Munn is busy checking the files to compile the overdue list for the day. Second hour Marlee Eves can be found checking the magazines and placinq them in their respective covers. Third hour Io Ann Stapp serves as financial secretary, by checking and double checking balances and accounts. Charlotte Kelpe is in charge of the library fourth hour when she re- pairs tears, or removes pencil marks. loan McClain takes over in the afternoon, doinq routine and special work. She is relieved by Sarah Ellison who straiqhtens up for the next day. This year the librarians, super- vised by Mrs. lanese Welty, con- ducted a book sale November l5- l8, selling old books in an effort to obtain funds for new books. Mehlville's pep club tthe Pantherettesl and their vigorous cheerleaders deserve the credit for cheering the team on to victory when the chips are down. Although the basketball sea- son, completed last February, left much to be desired in the way of victories, it did provide a few thrills for the loyal Panther fol- lowing. Winning only three games out of twenty-five is anything but a champions pace, however, a probable reason for this was lack of height. After losing most of his last year's team, including the starting quintet, Coach Cross had to build his new team entirely with short men. On the brighter side of the pic- ture was the thrilling victory over Valley Park in the Bayless Tourna- ment and the defeat of Bayless in the closing minutes of play, 50-48. This was the first time a Mehlville team has beaten Bayless in eight years. The leading scorer of the l95U-Sl season was Elmer Zum- steg. The future cage seasons at Mehlville appear to be quite a bit brighter as a glance at the B team record shows. Girls' tliletics Girls' competitive sports at Mehlville are enthusiastically received by the student body. Volleyball, basketball, and softball teams were organized by Miss Lorena Mc- Cutchen, airls' physical education teacher. Although the results of the spring season were not compiled at the time the RE- FLECTOR went to press, the qirls were hope- ful, and were anxiously awaitinq the begin- ning of each encounter. After graduating lrorn Washington Elementary School as vale- dictorian, he came to Mehlville where he has made an outstanding record tor service and leadership. Eddie was president of his class as a soph- omore, and has shown an intense interest in all school activities. ln sports, he is a partici- pant in baseball, track, and basketball. His quiet way and never-ending smile have made Eddie a favorite among all who know him.
