OCLI' 8 lflCCLtl0I'l Board President Louis Witzel has served since his election fif teen years ago Vice President Paul Adler was elected to Board membership 1 1935 Mr Charles Wiethop has dis charged his duties as Board treas urer since 1935 Secretary John Sabis as served in that capacity for ve years Senior member of the Board is Louis Franke dedicatee of the 1949 Reflector Cin recognition of 35 years of service Mr Elmer Voerg was elected to Board membership in 1945 and served until January 1 1950. Mr. W. Whitley Barnes was appointed recently to fill the un- expired term of Mr. Voerg. Although not an official mem- ber of the Board, Supt. Emil H. C. Bernard attends the regular semi-monthly meetings. 41 Page Seven

JJ C ZZZMWI Behind a prosperous society IS a competent leader For over twenty five years the M6hlV1ll6 School District has been so honored under the supervision of Superintendent Emil H C Ber nard His capability and leadership are due in part to h1s extensive educational background Oakville Elementary School served as inaug uration and St Pauls Parochial School fol lowed in sequence Perk1nsonHerple Com mercial College and Southeast Missouri State College terminated Supt Bernards schooling for a time Later he received a B S degree at Missouri University and took a post gradu ate course at Washmgton University HIS friendliness with the elders does not end Mr Bernard s sociality Students at Mehl ville are convinced that he IS their friend and that he has an abiding interest in each of them Many times he can be seen visiting the various classrooms distributing his views and ideas or having friendly chats with the pupils as well as teachers As Mehlv1lle High School grows and progresses a considerable portion of its advancement must be attributed to the skillful guidance and direction of the ever amiable Supt Bernard His thirty seven years with the District have endeared him to the community W JQrmzf O Eerdaum An intricate part of Mehlville High School for many years IS its friendly efficient principal K O Bierbaum Extensive preparation in the educational field forms but a portion of Mr Bierbaums qualifications He has an intense interest in the affairs and problems of Mehl ville students Moreover the clocklike compe tence with which he handles the routine duties of his office leaves the impression that no task is too tr1v1al or too great for him to tackle Mr Bierbaum holds his masters degree from Washington University He did his un dergraduate study at Central Missouri State College at Warrensburg and at McKendree College He received his bachelors degree in mathematics from McKendree At the present time his duties as principal occupy all of his time. He previously d1d classroom teaching here however. Extra-curricular activities occupy a considerable amount of his time. H is a regular at basketball games and he serves as business adviser for the Reflector Staff. Page Six

acugg 7WrJ. olleonarrl Mehlville's home economics and art teacher, Mrs. Mary E. Leonard. comes from Caruthersville, Mo. After completing her bachelor's degree at the Southeast Missouri State College, she has broadened her training through summer study at Missouri University and Peabody College at Nashville, Tennessee. In holding the co-sponsorship of the senior class she has been kept busy find- ing means to raise money for its trip to Washington. D.C. this year. Mrs. Leonard Hnds much enjoyment in cooking and homemaking and lately has tried her hand at painting. She enjoys eat- ing and traveling. WWA. garreff Mehlville's master mathematician is Mrs. Helen Barrett, now teaching for her fifth year locally. Her willingness to help anyone at anytime has made her an all- time favorite with students. Before Mrs. Barrett came to Mehlville, she taught at Corning, Mo.. and served as substitute teacher in the St. Louis Public Schools. She received her training at Northwest Missouri State Teachers, Col- lege and Missouri University, where she was a member of Pi Lambda Theta, na- tional honor sorority. Mrs. Barrett enjoys reading, conversation, and jaunts to Mexico. Wir. .Slmmw Teacher of history, debate and social studies, sponsor of the Reflector and de- bate squad, and co-sponsor of Masque and Gavel and the junior class is Mr. Gayle 1 Simmons. a graduate of Southeast Missouri State College. During summers, he attends the Grad- uate School at Washington University. working toward his master's degree. He enjoys writing, arguing, baseball. and ama- teur radio mechanics. 7770.5 Wie Cl fad en Hailing from Southeast Missouri is Mehlville's effi- cient girlsl physical education teacher, Miss Lorena McCutchen. She holds a B. S. in Education from Southeast Missouri State College. and a master's de- gree in religious education from Southwest Baptist Seminary at Fort Worth, Texas, At the latter she picked up her southern accent. Before coming to Mehlville. she taught for three years at Gideon. 77fl,... mn, Mrs. Janese Welty is Mehlville's charming and dig- nified teacher of English and French, who earned her bachelor's degree at Ohio State University. Besides her duties in the language department she serves as faculty advisor on the Board of Councilors. supervises the library and co-sponsors the sophomore class. In her spare time. Mrs. Welty enjoys music and literature. After four years at Southeast Missouri State Col- lege, where she earned her bachelor's degree, Miss Williamson then came to Mehlville. and has been here for three years. In summer vacation Miss Williamson attends gradu- ate school or works locally in her chosen field. Number one among her hobbies is sewing, which might explain why she always looks so neat and trim. She also enjoys dancing and church activities. gli!
