emo: Lstory OLD SALTS INITIAL VOYAGE In the fall of 1944 fiftv one lonely freshmen boarded the S S Mehlv1lle and were placed at the mercy of the ruthless officers We the freshmen were cruelly tortured by various means but we ab sorbed all pumshment knowing that we would rise next year as glor1ous shell backs As pollywogs our most promlnent soclal aCt1V1ty was the May Dance wh1ch was a great success Our class was hon ored by having one of our members Ver dell Rlck crowned Queen of the May M Evans and Mrs Krebs were our captams durlng th1s our 1n1t1al voyage SECOND VOYAGE In 1945 we embarked on our second voyage mmus several of our former class mates We were strengthened by add1t1on al members however and felt quite secure as shellbacks W1th Mr Woods as our sponsor we presented a Chrlstmas Dance which aided our bankroll and furnlshed us w1th much enjoyment Totsy Rauhut up held our growlng prestige being crowned Reflector Queen of 1946 THIRD VOYAGE Our third voyage was one that we shall not soon forget for lt contained many pleasant experiences We were now officers We d1d unto the pollywogs as was done unto us and we reaped great dellght from the past1me Our greatest enjoyment was derlved from such 3CtlV1tleS as the Hayseed Howl The aftermath of this event was the scrubb1ng of the gymnaslum by our female members for lt had been strewn with hay The g1rls enjoyed It though? MISS Ellzabeth McDonald and Mrs Barrett negotiated w1th the old salts the seniors successfully and we pooled our efforts toward the staglng of a carn1val Our co operatlve Splrlt made the great undertaklng a success Our merrlment was increased by the crowmng of MISS Verdell R1Ck as Carmval Queen The Junior Senlor Prom h1ghl1ghted our wonderful junxor year W1th the set tmg a Dutch garden our class performed a feat wh1ch had never before been at tempted the channelmg of water around the gymnaslum floor 1n an aluminum trough A Dutch style w1ndm1ll fed the stream wh1ch was surrounded by tuhps real grass and sod Mlnnows romped 1n 1ts blue waters and quaint wooden bridges passed over It We jun1ors although pre jud1ced belleved our Prom to have sur passed all others The Prom cl1maxed our th1rd voyage and we found ourselves anx 1ous for the commg final voyage FINAL VOYAGE In September of 1947 thlrty five good reasons to bel1eve our semor year would be the finest attalnable passed beneath the Mind 1n a Sound Body The election of Mrs Barrett and Mr Fox as our sponsors vlrtually assured us of success on our fourth voyage The Hayseed Howl our first dance of the year was enjoyed by all and placed us ln sem1 retlrement We are gazlng Wlth eager eyes toward the 1948 Prom for 1n the hands of the jun1ors it should be a memorable OCCHSIOD Our ship has just anchored for the last t1me and we must now depart Words cannot express the gratltude wh1ch we feel at this moment of departure gratitude to the school boald and to the entlre fac ulty especlally to our sponsors durlng our four voyages gratltude to our classmates our frlends 1n the other classes the Mothers Club and to everyone who has taken an lnterest in us Above all we salute the S S Mehlv1lle May her green and white sa1ls never be soxled by dis honor i , , . . i . - i ' x , - ' 7 - ' y i l y s ' a ' ' , . r. . . , ' s - 9 ' , - a a ' ' .
