Q71 mefzmo, sf ,f THE LOGBOOK SCRIBES Ahoy mates' Come let us take a stroll down the decks of the S S Mehlville your ship of knowledge for the past year On our way ue shall look in on the gals and gobs who presented this REFLECTOR of 1948 to you In the center is Joe Frank, resting leisurely for the first time in months. It is he who re- ceives credit for this attractive yearbook, for it was his efforts and encouragements that kept the others at the wheel. Beside him are Janet Steinmetz and Peyton Jenness who shared with him the drugery of this task. Looking on de- murely is our business manager, Verdell Rick, who heaves a sight of relief as her work is finished. Yes, these four comrades have burned gallons of midnight oil in order that this year- book may bring to you pleasant memories of your school days. However, this would have been a painful struggle without the assistance of several other members of the crew. Bob Alexander displayed his ability as Literary Editor. Substituting a pencil for his violin, Richard Wilking brought us reports from the Music Department. Philip Heitz, one of our versatile athletes, gave us a play-by-play account of lVIehlville's sports ac- tivities. Sue Frank and Lois Grassinger blos- somed forth with their artistic skill in portray- ing Mehlville life as they conceived it Our photographers Horton Simons and John Fisch back revealed with their cameras samples of Mehlville life Jei ry Blumenfeld has searched and searched for unknown Jokes so that he does not hear that familiar rmg Ive heard that one before After every report was assembled our typ 1sts Dorothy Snyder and Evelyn Klund prepared the manuscript for publication 1 1111 Ulllll 1 ll I 1 l II 1 R 1 H11 I JI 11 IIXQ x . ze ' af , ' ' - 7 - - ' in 1 7 7 1 , 77 V a n I 1 l . Mehlville passing Cabin 100 at one time or another have no doubt seen steam seeping from under the door. Had they taken a peek through the port- hole, they would have found the shore patrol letting off a little hot air in one of its confer- ences. Looking toward the helm you would have found the chairman, Jerry Green, talking vibrantly to the Board, while the secretary, Jean Delaney, was hastily jotting down notes and the vice-chairman, Joe Frank, was dozing in his hammock. This year, the Mehlville has a new charter, constitution, which was diligently prepared last spring by a special group of students and teach- ers, and this fall was brought before the entire crew for its acceptance. It was approved by an overwhelming majority vote. Under this new charter four teachers appointed from the cap tain s office along with the mates elected from the different departments and from the respec tive classes met to make up the shoie patrol Seriously though the Board of Councilors this year has proven itself to be a highly effi cient organization This is illustrated by its sale of T B pins its planning of many enjoyable assemblies its consideration of all foimal com plaints and its general assistance in the carry ing out of all school activities r4'.vl11'l1q il 1 ont rc xx hit cw ht II 1 1 Cf nfl rc xx ltltt ht 1 R1 mn I nm lrzff' TIHIXS , - . . , . 7 , ' n , . . . , , Q - , - Fr 1 ', -' t rig I .llr.v. However, details of the softball pro- gram cannot be given as this article is being written before the beginning of the season. At the beginning of the last semester a new faculty member was welcomed on board ship. She was Mrs. Freeman, the girls, gym instruc- tor. We, the crew, are looking forward toward our petite new mate to start the softball rolling. Either Mary Jo Hirt or Doris Alexander will be standing by on the mound waiting for the signal to deliver the ball that will initiate the first game. Jean Delaney, Dorothy Eckerle, Laverne Ferbet and other veteran softballers will be at their respective stations on the field in preparation for an exciting season. Not only do we have these outstanding candidates but several eager recruits as well xx ho will strive to improve their abilities There have been games scheduled with oui neighboring opponents namely Hancock Aff ton Bayless and Valley Park As we gaze into our crystal softball we see a future so bright that it nearly blinds our eyes We are confident that these girls will compe tently represent our green and vx hite and we are wholeheartedly behind them 7 111111 lllll Ili mu 1 UNH 1 Il I ll 1 ll I ll HHH! ll zu N111 il if OLJl.I'!S, fljo Ney Swish - over the net it goes! Yes, our girls' volleyball team made it almost every time as they began the season with a fighting spirit and came through with flying colors. As the follow- ing report illustrates, they won half of their games played and fought earnestly against their opponents in the others. Under the ever-watch- ful eye of Mrs. Rutter, the girls displayed good sportsmanship and excellent teamwork, two factors that enabled them to win. Ida Schaefer, the team's captain, portrayed her capability in spiking as did Joyce Reich and Dorothy Eckerle. Totsy Rauhut and Jackie Kettler used their shortness advantageously through their effective set-ups. Each librarian has a specific duty to per- form within her respective period. During the first hour of the day, Nancy Moss makes a list of all the guilty people who have overdue books. When the sextette was asked about some peculiarities of the group, the answer received was: our singing, but this statement is sure not to be seconded by those who have heard the girls perform. A distinguishing feature of the sex- tette is that it, literally speaking, is a septette. Three girls, with about equal qualities, were admitted to the position which normally re- quires two. The position of first soprano is held by Verdell Rick and Ruth Dietz. The girls, shall we say, have to protrude their lofty voices be cause they are the ones who are most generally heard above the others Coming down the line we discover the section with the unbalanced membership The gnls are Janet Steinmetz Ailyne Knoll and Ellen Ann Muehlhauser This section is the semi foundation and the as sistant to the melody carrying firsts Peihaps these extra responsibilities may be the cause for the over population of this section Last but not least we come to the foundation the altos With Marilyn Altenbei nd and Tish P01 ter pro xiding the mellovx rich suppoit of the gioup the iesult is a sextette with a harmonious blend If fl 1 1 Ill rlx I , C um tette Many times as the Mehlville student walks along the halls during lunch period he strolls toward the music room for whence cometh the billowing blending harmony of the Jack Benny Quartette. The Quartette has acquired the habit of gathering around the piano and singing the way they wish. Another instance where the boys ad. lib. is on the school bus. The boys repertoire includes quite a va- riety of tunes of many different styles. The styles most esteemed by the students seem to be modern tunes with various impressive pan- tomimes presented apropos to the lyrics sung. They also have serious music such as Two Roses Lord Jesus Christ Our King and The Bells. The song that the boys sing quite regularly is Medley which is greeted by a sigh every time the opening chord is heard. Some of this year s appearances of the Quar- tette were made at the Hayseed Howl the Christmas Dance a Mothers Club meeting and a play at St Johns Church When witnessing a performance of the Quartette you observe and feel the deep vi brant tones of our brawny bass Alf Next in line about two heads lower than Alf is Jerry our baritone with the solo voice We come now to the straining second tenor Richard who ha '4l1I. Ultimately, they proceeded to hound the student body until they had signed their names on the dotted line, for a slight cost, of course. The sponsors of the group, Mr. Stewart and Mrs. Rutter, managed to see that vigorous pep ses-- sions were held before various games to instill an ardent spirit in the members of the club. These sessions were led by the tireless cheer- leaders who were trained by Mr. Fox. The zealous shouts of the Pep Club stimulated our team on to victory. Even when the hand of de- feat struck, the fervent voices displayed good sportsmanship. On the evening of April 20 the Pep Club held a banquet in appreciation for the school spirit and untiring efforts of the members of the various teams.
