IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO HAVE GONE BEFORE US SAM HOUSTON BISHOP Houston Blshop was born rn Young County Texas January 6 1911 to Horace and M11l1e Brshop farmers Houston was the thrrd son and thlrd chlld born to Mr and Mrs Bishop Houston flfSI attended school at Olney Texas and then when he was rn the S1XIh grade hrs famrly moved to Archer County about three mlles northwest of Megargel Texas where he attended school untll he graduated He stayed home w1th h1s parents and farmed and drove the school bus untll he marrled Burtrum Freeman He then moved to Megargel drove a school bus farmed and worked 1n the o11 freld Houston was drafted rnto the army ln 1942 and spent four years there He fought ln the Battle of the Bulge ln Germany among other battles HIS army Serlal number was 38059653 and was 1n the Half Track Armored Inf D1v1 reason called back 1nto the army and sent to Camp Forest New York He was dlscharged as Flrst Sgt U S Army After the war he worked for Repubhc O11 F1e1d Supply H1s last job w1th Repubhc O11 Freld Supply was 1n Snyder Texas where he dled February 22 1981 He IS burled 1n Restland Cemetery at Olney Texas fwrztlen by O V Hamptonj BURL WALKER AYTES Burl Walker was the daughter of Mr and Mrs Sam Walker We do not have the date of b1rth of Burl but was probably 1910 or 1911 She marrled Raymond Aytes before she graduated but went ahead and graduated Burl was kllled rn an automoblle accldent somewhere near Fort Worth Texas I don t have the date or where she was burled. fwrrtten by O V Hampton! - . ! 9 9 , . . , , . 3 7 3 ' ' 3 9 sion. MEGARGEL SCHGOL The Megargel School started on Aprll 19 1910 mth thls Drspensatlon lt IS ordered by the court that school dtstrlct M4 tB1ttermoundJ be sub d1v1ded lnto two dlstrlcts where by a new school dlstrlct shall be known and created as Megargel School Drstrlct 927 The frrst school house was a framed two room burldmg bu1lt rn 1910 ln the summer of 1913 two more rooms were added to the north slde of the bulldmg This bulldlng was torn down 1n 1917 and then a two story brlck burldmg was put up rn tts place The frrst class to graduate rn Megargel School was tn 1918 In 1927 the present Hrgh School bu1ld1ng was bu1lt and the class of 1928 was the frrst to graduate 1n rt The class of 1929 was the second class to graduate rn the present Hlgh School butldmg and the 12th class to graduate rn Megargel School The graduatrng class of 1929 started IH September 1928 mth 28 puprls rn the class There was 12 boys and 16 grrls Only 23 graduated 11 boys and 12 glrls Helen L1v1ngston marrred Nolton Jolley and dropped out of school She IS now deceased Ada Belle Mounce marrred Lawton Blshop and dropped out of school She IS now deceased Margarette McLarty marrted H T Duncan and dld not graduate Velma Hayden broke her leg and she had to mrss qurte a b1t of school and graduated tn the class of 1930 B W Bradshaw Jr moved out of town The other 23 students graduated We want to welcome you to the 60th Graduatron Anmversary of the Class of 1929 It IS w1th great pleasure that we have been able to gather a short hrstory of the lxves of most of us We appreclate the Interest and cooperatlon that you have shown to make thrs publrcatron posstble . 7. . . . . , . . . . 44 ' v N s ' 'S . .x . .H ,, . , . . . . . x - v . . . r . . 5 . . . . x . . HOMER RAGLE He was born November 18 1907 m Snyder He went to Lawton OK w1th h1s famlly 1n h1s early chlldhood and l1ved there unt1l he was ln h1s mrddle teens H1s father was a m1n1ster and the famlly l1ved 1n varlous towns 1n Texas after thelr return from Oklahoma Ragle completed hrs hrgh school educa t1on at Megargel and then attended ACC He transferred to North Texas State College where he met Mlss Leona Norrls a student m the college They were marrled August 19 1933 and l1ved ln Megargel durmg the flrst four years of the1r marrred l1fe They moved to Taft where he was employed by a lumber company He worked 1n the Taft Post Offlce for Taft Cotton O11 Co Reynolds Metals Co and Prrtchard and Abbott before dec1d1ng to go back to college and prepare hlmself for a school teachlng career He enrolled for h1s senlor year at A 8: I College where h1S younger son Verne Ragle was a freshman student He was a member of Alpha Chl at A 8a I College He recelved h1s B A degree ln 1960 and later returned for one summer for speclal courses m mathemat1cs He and Mrs Ragle taught ln Allce and then returned to Taft where she had taught durmg the years he worked 1n that town They taught m Taft schools for two years after whxch Mrs Ragle accepted a f1rst grade pos1t1on xn Odem and he taught for two years 1n Mathls He accepted the math posrtlon 1n the Smton school system ln September 1965 They made thexr home ln Odem from the t1me they left the Taft schools Ragle was a member of the Church of Chrlst and at the t1me of h1s death was an elder 1n Park Avenue Church of Chrlst 1n Odem He dled January 28, 1966 and h1s wnfe Leona dled ln July 1981 They had two boys and one g1rl 1 ' 9 9 3 ' 7 ' 9 . , ., -a a 1 s ' 9 3 , . , .
