HOMER RAGLE He was born November 18 1907 m Snyder He went to Lawton OK w1th h1s famlly 1n h1s early chlldhood and l1ved there unt1l he was ln h1s mrddle teens H1s father was a m1n1ster and the famlly l1ved 1n varlous towns 1n Texas after thelr return from Oklahoma Ragle completed hrs hrgh school educa t1on at Megargel and then attended ACC He transferred to North Texas State College where he met Mlss Leona Norrls a student m the college They were marrled August 19 1933 and l1ved ln Megargel durmg the flrst four years of the1r marrred l1fe They moved to Taft where he was employed by a lumber company He worked 1n the Taft Post Offlce for Taft Cotton O11 Co Reynolds Metals Co and Prrtchard and Abbott before dec1d1ng to go back to college and prepare hlmself for a school teachlng career He enrolled for h1s senlor year at A 8: I College where h1S younger son Verne Ragle was a freshman student He was a member of Alpha Chl at A 8a I College He recelved h1s B A degree ln 1960 and later returned for one summer for speclal courses m mathemat1cs He and Mrs Ragle taught ln Allce and then returned to Taft where she had taught durmg the years he worked 1n that town They taught m Taft schools for two years after whxch Mrs Ragle accepted a f1rst grade pos1t1on xn Odem and he taught for two years 1n Mathls He accepted the math posrtlon 1n the Smton school system ln September 1965 They made thexr home ln Odem from the t1me they left the Taft schools Ragle was a member of the Church of Chrlst and at the t1me of h1s death was an elder 1n Park Avenue Church of Chrlst 1n Odem He dled January 28, 1966 and h1s wnfe Leona dled ln July 1981 They had two boys and one g1rl 1 ' 9 9 3 ' 7 ' 9 . , ., -a a 1 s ' 9 3 , . , . Q 5 -f 'x if er-5 .- '14, li MABLE CLANAHAN TAYLOR I was born to Allen and Nelhe Clanahan January 2 1911 rn the Brtter Creek commumty rn Young County I had three brothers but only one rs l1v1ng now My mother and father are both gone so my brother and I are the only ones left IH our famlly We moved just 1ns1de the Spr1ng Creek school d1str1ct so my oldest brother and I walked or rode a horse the two m11es to school We attended school at Sprung Creek untll school was out then to Bltter Creek School for two months I had a lot of frlends ln both communrtres We attended Smgmgs at Brtter Creek School House every Sunday nrght People from everywhere came to smg and lrsten We had a wonderful trme We also had partles Everyone knew everyone else we were all good frlends My oldest brother and I drove a Ford to Olney Hrgh School He flnlshed hlgh school ln 1928 My parents then rented a room rn Megargel for Lmnre graduated rn 1929 In 1932 I marrled Ray Taylor and moved to Graham Texas We have two boys One l1ves 1n Graham and one lrves ln Arlrngton Texas In 1964 I lost my husband I went to nlght school and worked all day to send my chrldren to school I kept books for about 15 years Then I took a job carlng for a drsabled person for about frve years In 1976 I closed my home and went to lrve wrth my son 1n Arllngton to help hrm w1th hrs four chlldren 12 6 3 and 7 months I started three 1n school and stayed for twelve years At the end of school May 31 1988 I moved back to my home 1n Graham Texas My youngest grandson comes and stays all the tlme he has out of school I am now gorng on my 79th year feelrng good except a plnched nerve rn my back and a few old age complalnts whlch I get aggravated about because I can't do everythmg I want to do Gray and I. We did our own cooking, and attended school in Megargel, and ' 7 ' 5 3 CLEAT COCKRELL Born August 6 1911 at a farm house at Westover Texas Started to school at age s1x at the new school butldmg 1n Westover I walked a m1le to school down a d1rt road 1n all kmds of weather ram sleet ICC and snow along w1th pretty sun shlney days After f1n1sh1ng the 9th grade I transferred to Megargel To get to school l walked one and a half m1les across Mr Rrchardson s pasture to catch the school bus dr1ven by Mr Hampton We had about a ten mlle route on muddy roads before we reached the school house I was one of the graduatmg class of 1929 In September of 1929 I went to W1Ch1la Falls and entered Draughons Buslness College After f1n1sh1ng college I got a Job as bookkeeper wlth the Graham M111 84 Elevator ln Graham After workmg there almost 2 years 12 to 18 hours a day SIX and seven days a week for S60 00 a month I asked for a ralse All I got was a laugh from the boss I gave h1m two weeks notlce and qult I must have been lucky because one week later I was employed at General Mllls rn W1ch1ta Falls startlng at S90 00 per month workmg forty hours per week Boy was I 1n Hlgh Cotton Wh11e workmg for General M1115 I met the prettlest l1ttle brown eyed 1935 she became Mrs Cleat Cockrell In 1938 when W Lee O Damel fThe H1l1b1l1y Flour Mani was elected governor of Texas he was in need of an offlce man to handle hrs flour accountlng and personal busmess I was transferred to Fort Worth by General M1115 to take over th1s asslgnment One year later the flour company closed and I moved to Austm I contlnued to work for Gov O Damel and worked nn the State Audltor s offlce Whrle l1v1ng ln Austm I attended the Unlverslty of Texas at n1ght takrng advanced accountlng and personnel management Durlng th1s t1me I recelved Greetmgs from Uncle Sam I was rnducted ln the army at Fort Sam Houston and was asslgned to the Elghth Servxce Command where I spent my tour of duty After my dlscharge from the army I returned to Fort Worth I went lnto partnershrp w1th a pr1nt1ng company I remamed w1th the company for seven teen years Durmg that tlme 119471 the stork VlS1ICd us and brought us a 11ne baby boy In 1963 I sold my mterest 1n the prmtlng company and ln January, 1964 I started my own busmess wlth one small prmtmg press My wrfe was book keeper I was the salesman and our son was dehvery boy and jamtor after school hours J i ' . . . 5 . , , . . . . . , . , - - 5 . l . , 7 9 ' 3 ' ' L6 ' ii . brunette girl I ever saw. It was tough sleddmg after our son graduated from TC U He was 1n R OTC w h1le rn college and was commrssroned as a 2nd Lreutenant ln the Army upon graduatron He had two years mlhtary duty one ln the U S and one rn Vletnam After hrs return he became an actrve partner rn the busrness and we began Worth John our son IS marrled has a lovely wlfe a teenage daughter and a n1ne year old son He has a very mce home ln Fort Worth John IS now presldent of Cockrell Prrntmg and dolng a wonderful job I am a Mason and a charter member of South Hllls Lodge 1389 I am a Shrmer and a hte member of Moslah Motor Corps a past presrdent ot my Lrons Club past presldent of the Prrntmg lndustry ot North Texas and now presldent of my Sunday School class for the second trme I am now semr retrred I go down to the shop when l want to My wrfe and I spend a lot ot t1me travelmg tryrng to see some of thrs world When that rs done, we come back to Megargel and on out to our barn house on the farm near Westover rlght back where th1s hfe started We enjoy every mmute of 1t l . . 9 C T 1 . . - . A A CZ K , .!67,X'A, A ,f 4 'ff SUPERXNTENDENT l , V, 47 ,E f K, 1 4,2 If ff PRINCLPAL ALVA GERTRUDE HALE WORMINGTON Alva G Hale was born May 7 1910 in Red River County Texas near Clarksville Her parents were Jim H and L1ll1e Maude Tucker Hale They were farmers Alva first attended school in Red River County before her parents and family moved to Archer County about 1916 or 17 When they first came to Archer County Alva and the other children in her parents family attended school in Bitter Creek The rest of her grade and high school years she attended Megargel Schools After graduation from high school Alva went to Greenville Texas Methodist was at McCormack then she taught in Westover Megargel 13 W years in Iowa Park School 2 years m Graham Texas schools at East Ward Alva married Leonard L Wormington in 1941 After the war began Leonard Joined the U S Air Force and later on Alva joined the WAVES and served in Louisana and elsewhere After bemg discharged from the WAVES Alva went back to teaching school and retired in 1964 She then bought the family farm at Westover and tried her hand at farming She left the farm in 1985 and moved to Archer City, where she lives at the present time College, where she received her teacher's certificate. ERNEST MATTHIAS HALE 1 Ernest Matthias Hale, born October 2, 1911, is the youngest of five sons and one daughter tyoungest childl of William Henry Hale and Florence fRileyJ Hale. H. F. HARMEL, JR. I was born in Megargel, Texas on August 6, 1911. I lived in Megargel until I graduated from school in 1929. I went to business school in Wichita Falls in the fall of 1929. In 1931 I took a bookkeeping job with Auto Spring 84 Supply Co and stayed there until 1935 when I moved to Oklahoma City and worked for Armour 8z Co until January 1936 I moved to Vernon Texas in 1936 and put in a Parts store which I ran for two years In January 1938 I moved to Seymour Texas and went into the wholesale gas and oil business where I stayed until December 30 1988 I still l1ve1n Seymour but I am retired at this time In 1934 I married Maurme Bradburn in Wichita Falls and we raised two sons who married and each have one son and one daughter giving us four grandchildren at this time TURNER L KUNKEL I was one of ten children born to Fred W and Mattie Kunkel on our farm about seven miles northeast of Megargel Texas Birthdate September 20 1911 I was named after Turner Lee Anderson our rancher neighbor on the south side of our farm The first two or three years of my school days were at the old Eureka school about three miles west of our farm In about 1920 my family moved to Megargel where my dad built a flour mill and was in that business for quite a number of years until he retired The rest of my school days through high in high school I was quite active in football basketball and tennis I was also a member of our high school band which was directed by Tom McCarty who was to become my future brother in law After graduating from high school I was very fortunate to be able to go to Texas A 8L M where I graduated in 1933 with a B S Degree in Electrical Engineering Since I was in the ROTC at A 8: M I became a 2nd Lieutenant in the Coast Artillery Reserve upon graduation Those were the depression days and Jobs were not easy to get at that time I worked with my dad at the flour mill for several months until getting a Job with Texaco in their Geophysical Division in February of 1934 The next several years of my working career with Texaco were on a seismograph crew in south Louisiana In 1935 I married Claudean McCarty and our first home together was in Morgan City Louisiana Being on a seismic school were in Megargel, where I graduated from high school in 1929.
