Text from Pages 1 - 116 of the 1969 volume:

THE '69 NHRROR PRESENTED BY THE MIRROR STAFF OF MEDINA HIGH SCHOOL MEDINA, New Yomc FOREWORD 1969 will bring various recollections to mind for those of us attending M.H.S. This year will be memorable to the student body because a new administration was begun under a different principal and many new teachers were added to the faculty. The Seniors will remember 1969 as the culmination of their high school years and they will now be entering a new frontier of adulthood and independence. For the Juniors it is a time of planning ahead, trying for better academic grades and, also, a time for planning their remaining years at M.H.S. The Sophomores will remember this year as a time of transition, from the old to the new, and a time of changing attitudes and responsibilities. In later years, long after we have left the hallowed halls of M.H.S., we recall some of the many school symbols which surround us. The Mustang, books, pompon, lockers, megaphones, daily bulletins, like old familiar friends will reappear in our memories. Memories must be made before they are able to be recalled. So, it is with this in mind that we proudly present to the students, and faculty of Medina High School, the 1969 Mirror, Sue Davey Editor-in-Chief TABLE OF CONTENTS l, FACULTY AND ADMINISTRATION ...... There is advancement and growth, or there is retrogression. Those who set definite goals in life usually achieve more than do those who are content to let the winds of for- tune direct their courses. Although your graduation completes certain objectives, may you do your best to set new goals and continue to accept life's challenges enthusiastically. May you always keep in mind the importance of health, humility, concern for others, industry, character, and faith. Strive to make your choices wisely, using the knowledge and experience you have gained in the past to help you determine your future. In whatever you do, may you have the courage and wisdom to take the road less traveled by if this is best for you and your fellow man. We hope you are prepared for your next step. We hope you will go forth and do great things. We hope you will use your knowledge to help in any way toward the solving of the problems which face our great nation. America is a great country. It takes graduates such as yourselves to keep it strong. It takes your clear thinking, your energies, your abilities, to keep it going and growing. The impression that came to my mind in the first days I spent in Medina was this: Medina, the village with opened doors. The people seemed to be so friendly that, I think, in less than two months I was almost perfectly adapted. My American family helped me so much that I do not know how to thank them. School was the base of my A.F.S. experience concerning many factors such as school organiza- tion, the level of education, the treatment be- tween teachers and students, the conviviality of the American teen-agers,-the Clubs, the Sports fI'll never forget the Football gamesj and every- thing else. I would like to write so many things but the words do not come to my mind. I would like to thank everybody who helped me in this year but words do not matter. I would like to thank the whole Medina, a so little town with so large a heart! Carlos A. D. de Oliveira Carlos from Brazil Rlghls Tom to Brazil My summer of 1968 as an AFS exchange student was probably the greatest experience of my life. I went to the rapidly progressing country of Brazil, the only Portuguese speaking country in Latin America. My trip lasted nearly three months, and I had the very fortunate opportunity to visit much of this vast country. I saw Brazil's modern capitol of Brasilia, the in- dustrial city of Sao Paulo, and the beautiful vacation resort of Rio de Janeiro. But I also saw the favelos and some ofthe less attractive features of Brazil. This, I think, makes my perspective of this country and its people much wider when I come to share my experience with you. But the most important part of my stay in Belo Horizonte, Brazil with the de Carvalho family was I learned how similar these people really are to all of us. Even though transportation, language, and governments keep peoples of the world apart, everyone should realize firsthand for himselfhow human all of us are. I am thankful for having had this valuable experience. The Acapella choir is widely known for its excellent quality. They have trav- eled to many choral activities around Western New York. For many years they have received very high ratings singing the highest grade of music pos- sible. This year they sang for the Chamber of Commerce, for the men at the Nar- cotics Rehabilitation Center, besides regular in-school performances. Eleven members were selected to take part in the All-State Sectional Chorus and a majority of the choir always parti- cipates in County Chorus. l 5 l 73 MIXED CHORUS Top Row: Kubatek, Rogers, Wilkins, Benz, Thomas, Grapes, Marciniak, Peck, R.
