To the student body, happiness is cheering at a football or a basketball game until the team is victorious. lt is Spirit, as we the students know it, and as the Team knows it. To the Seniors, memorable moments might include the initial word from the guidance de- partment that they had been accepted at their chosen colleges. To the Juniors, the time when they will be Seniors is anticipated from the start. For the Sophomores, this year at lVl.H.S. has been an exciting new world that has created many challenges and has, for most, set definite goals that will be worked toward within the next two years. Finally, this year has been successful to the faculty, who have already met these challenges and in the cases of most, have set their goals to educate the young people of today, who will become the leaders of tomorrow. Just as the seed has been planted and cared for in order that the tree might grow, so too, have the seeds of education been sown for another year into the minds of the young people at lVl.H.S. But, unlike the tree, people are often able to review themselves in the process of growing, both physically and mentally. It is with this thought in mind that we present to the students and faculty of Medina High School, the 1968 '4lVlirror . .ludy Baldwin Renee Cardone, Editor-in-Chiefs JUDY BALDWIN RENEE CARDONE TABLE of CONTENTS Administration and Faculty ........... It has be- come an unforgettable experience and one difficult to be- lieve. How all young people over the world are about the same, how parents look after their children, how the attitude of teachers toward pupils is all this I have learned here. School life takes the most time, but is not the least en- joyable. When I came to know the school better I was very surprised to discover what a teen-ager is capable of. The friendliness of everyone made me feel so much at home. It took me a long time to know the names of my class- mates fand some I will never knowl. But everybody knew me. The Working of clubs intrigued me, and the Working of the student council is tremendous. Another important thing is the relationship between authority and studentsg friendly and full of respect. Sports events, this is one activity I enjoyed the most and I feel a little bit more why so many people appreciate them. The whole town of Medina has really made this year unforgettable, interesting and valuable. I know that words say not all, but I really am assured of the' great importance of this AFS program, so that I would wish that everybody could have the unbelievable opportunity I received. Greet Vanattenhoven Left Renee -to Paraguay Right Greet -from Belgium Summer-1967-as an American Field Service foreign exchange student to Paraguay, was certainly my greatest yet. For nearly three months I was totally immersed in South American culture-the Spanish language, the food, fiestas, serenades, siestas and paseos. My experiences included a three day stay in Buenos Aires, Argentina, two weeks in Paraguay's capitol, Asuncion, and ah eight-week stay with the Triguis family in Concepcion. Concepcion is a small city with only four blocks of paved streets. Because of its size, the people are very familiar with one another and I was able to make many friends. I attended school every afternoon and studied such subjects as math, biology, morals, zoology, diction, and Spanish literature. I even had the opportunity to learn a native dance. But the most important part of my summer was that by the end of it, I had really come to love and understand the people and their customs, and even to speak their language. In September, I had to leave them, but someday I expect to return and visit my family and friends again. Renee Cardone 57 SONG OF THE OPEN ROAD Afoot and light-hearted I take to the open road, Healthy, free, the world before me, The long brown path before me leading wherever I choose. Henceforth I ask not good-fortune, I myself am good-fortune, Henceforth l whimper no more, postpone no more, need nothing. Done with indoor complaints, libraries, querulous criticisms, Strong and content I travel the open road. The earth, that is sufficient, I do not want the constellations any nearer, I know they are well wherethey are, I know they suffice for those who belong to them. fstill here I carry my old delicious burdens, I carry them, men and women, I carry them with me wherever I go, I swear it is impossible for me to get rid of them, I am fill'd with them, and I will fill them in returnj Here is the test of wisdom, Wisdom is not finally tested in schools, Wisdom cannot be pass'd from one having it to another not having it, Wisdom is of the soul, is not susceptible of proof, is its own proof, Applies to all stages and objects and qualities and is content, Is the certainty of the reality and immortality of things, and the excellence of thingsg Something there is in the float of the sight of things that provokes it out of the soul. Now I re-examine philosophies and religions, They may prove well in lecture-rooms, yet not prove at all under the spacious clouds and along the landscape and flowing currents. Here is realization, Here is a man tallied-he realizes here what he has in him, The past, the future, majesty, love-if they are vacant of you you are vacant of them.
