We have witnessed great compatibility within our student body which has resulted in remarkable spirit and pride in M. H. S. Our athletic teams have carried the name of our school to sectional contests. Eighteen members of our senior class have been awarded Regents Scholar- ships and we have one National Merit semi-finalist. These are but a few of the memorable events of which we have been a part this year. Under our new principal, Mr. Prosperi, M. H. S. has changed many aspects of its former pattern. We now have a closed noon hour and a shorter school day. Instead of an activity period everyday, we have a regularly scheduled period once a week. We have added several new teachers this year. These, along with former faculty members, have guided and helped us greatly this year. The building itself has been altered too. The administra- tion offices have been moved from the main building. New classrooms have been added and even more are being added. Central, a part of our school system for over fifty years, no longer stands. It has been a year of change. As you look through the MIRROR, you will be able to look back into the lives of your fellow students and perhaps witness a reflection of the future. So, with this in mind, we proudly present to the students and the Class of 1967: THE MIRROR Mary Moriarty Editor-in-Chief vfg rf Q nn,-, Q-, , 1. Q Y ,,. C sf, R2 -KL. SENIORS I had doubts about my English when I arrived. How well I would be able to express myself was a problem. At first it was hard but with the help of my friends and sister I found it easier as time passed. Not only the language of America have I been learning, but the customs and pleasures of other people. I sincerely think that knowing people is important in today's world of troubles. By knowing people and understanding them is a Way in which we can help solve their problems and ours. This is the only way to succeed in world peace. I find Medina a little, beautiful town where I would like to live for all my life. As a person from a foreign country, I feel the people of Medina have really been sincere in making my time here a very pleasing and rewarding school year. This year l will always remember and hope someday to return the favor that everyone has given me. Ayleen Pena Arias The summer of 1966, beyond the shadow of a doubt, was the greatest of my life. It was a summer of traveling, seeing new places and meeting new people, but the most memorable and important part was representing you as an American Field Service student. I went to Lille, a city of 200,000 people, in the north of France. Here I spent two short months learning about France, the people, their customs, the French way of life, their problems, and, most important of all, our differences, which were very few yet not altogether unimportant. My impressions of the French way of life leave me only with memories of friendship and under- standing-not necessarily political, but rather cul- tural and personal. I found France much like the U.S. in many ways, but there is a certain some- thingi' that makes it different from any place else. Of course, any Frenchman will tell you that! The French everyday life is slightly different, and it took me a little while to get used to it. It is a great deal slower than life in America, and they alot themselves much more time for pleasure. It is mainly because of this that the French are more carefree than we are. We can accredit many of our differences to this. In short, I wish everyone had the opportunity that I had in going to a far- away place only to learn about the people that live there. To live in a foreign country and to attempt to learn about it first hand is invaluable as an experience, and one treasured for a lifetime. Peter Schmitt IN MEMORIAM LAVERNE ALLEN JR. I wondered why It left familiar things behind. A hand caught mine . . . I paid no mind. The stranger never once did say Just what had brought him on my way On we went, and some afraid I wished I hadn't come, but stayed. All the friends that I once knew Took a road named Goodbye too. There were no two roads just the same Though all were called Goodbye by name. The road went on, we went on too, And I was sad, for then I knew That never could I be the same Having walked down Goodbye Land. And though I couldn't understand. We walked together hand in hand. We said no words, but just walked on, I thought of things now past and gone. I thought of games I'd lost and won, I thought of all the things lid done, I thought of those I loved and cared, Of times we'd had, of things we'd shared. I thought of those I'd come to know. Just knowing them-they'd helped me so. I thought of things, of tears I'd shed . . . Those same things now brought smiles instead. The tasks I'd done, those left to do, I wondered how I'd make it through When something inside seems to say, The best you can from day to day. The way was rough, I knew the score, It never ends . . . there's always more. But now I know that all in all Each thing in its won place will fall. I thought of all the happy days, The sad ones now just seemed a haze, And in a flash I came to see How much the past had meant to me. We Walked along-I wondered where The future led and what was there. The past still echoed from behind. I was its, and it was mine. But in my heart was still a fear, And in my eye a shining tear, Yet on my face there was a smile, And we walked forward all the while. I walked along the road Goodbye. I looked hack once . . . I heaved a sigh Then I remembered at my side- My silent, but my constant guide. The stranger's hand I felt in mine. I looked into his face this time.
