' A I , s 55 ' io-X U Welcome This report is brought to you live from Medina High School. Everyone from lVI.H.S. has turned out for this re- markable event. Never before has anything like this happened in hfedina, in the United States, or in the world. History is in the making. From the outer realms of our vast universe comes Mr. Blrrp, a visiting dignitary from a foreign planet. Because our laudable reputation has reached the far corners of the uni- verse, hir. Blrrp is coming here as an ambassador to observe and study life at hledina High School, the typical American high school. President Eisenhower has campaigned interna- tional understanding and friendship by means of his Euro- pean, Asiatic, and South American visits and is now engaged in Russia to promote the same program. Khrushchev, while on his visit to the United States, was made aware of the Amer- ican way of life. As host to the first spaceman on American soil, we at hledina High School now hope to do our part to create friendship and understanding on a universal basis. I know you will be the perfect hosts and hostesses. If Mr. Blrrp is displeased, he will probably have the spacemen's union throw us right out of orbit. Among the group waiting to welcome our prominent guest Q -1- lf - 7-7. fa ,- .H are administrators, other school officials, and faculty mem- I I bers. All the students have assembled, also, and are antic- 1 , 'I ipating the thrills of the momentous arrival. The seniors have Q paused from their last hours of glory to be with us, and the ' i 4 freshmen, sophomores and juniors are, for this occasion, f A v cheering with the seniors rather than competing against them. - 1 , ' 1 Wait! A lull has come over the crowd. All eyes are up- -1 , KP lifted. A regular series of reflections illuminates the sky. Yes, 1 Q ladies and gentlemen, our guest is arriving. As his rotating AJ ,f 5 jg. metallic saucer comes into view, one can feel the excitement MJ - Y' and curiosity of the crowd. Before he lands, let me remind ,F you it is our purpose to show him the organization and func- tg tions of hledina High School, but, most important, he is here i - i' to meet you, the students. Through this yearbook, we hope E 1.-v to accomplish this as we review the year 1959-60. .1 7 A? X 1 I--' ' i 34' fp-5-illiwivw I' if L L X .4 1' K , iN 1 - -e xx Q I' .fb i ' 3 . As chief administrator of the high school he is a very busy man, fulfilling his role as the firm, but friendly, supervisor of hI.HLS.'s many and varied ac- tivities. hiiss Heady, his secre- tary and registrar of the high school, is a person whose pres- ence is essential to hIedina's fvicosmic organization. How's business? Mix Devlin offers ai helpful sug- gestion to an inquiring student. Blue Coats discuss problems with advisor, hir. Devlin. 6 F 4 Administration Staff' ld x..Z No mail today, Nlr. Coats? ltIr. Spaceman, we take great pleasure when we in- troduce to you our Administration Staff, which carries on work concerning the Superintendent and Board of Education. Mr, Burton Thomas is Business lNIanager with lVIrs. Helsa Clapp as his secretary and registrar. ltlrs. lVIildred Wagner, school tax collector, and Mrs. Elsie Quintern, school district clerk are the other effi- cient members of this staff so essential to the success of the ltiedina Public School System. Here a student from Secretarial ' Practice takes charge of the first Hoor office during the noon hour. l Burton Thomas, Melsa Clnpp, ltfildrcd W'agner, Elsie Quinlernn '7 Curriculum and Guidance tw.. - Clifford Wise, Curriculum Coordinator And now, llir. Spaceman, we proudly introduce you to Mr. Wise, curriculum co-ordinator at Medina. He has com- plete knowledge of the newest trends and methods in the field of education. By his observations in every type of class, he is able to contribute invaluable suggestions for educational improvements. At the bottom of the page you will meet a school-renowned pair, our guidance directors. Without the help of lNIrs. Hinck- ley and Mr. Parsons, many of our students might have gone astray in planning for a fruitful secondary education. Their suggestions and helpful aids are innumerable. Besides offer- ing assistance in choosing courses and colleges, they are under- standing with any personal problems we may have. Pamphlets and other material concerning colleges are readily available to students via the Guidance Department. N ow, Mr. Spaceman, you are meeting the members of the Retailing Cooperative Work Experience. The members, who are chosen from Retailing classes I and II, are juniors and seniors wishing to accept part-time retailing work. After the completion of 450 hours of paid experience, these students can earn one full credit toward graduation. The purpose of this work is to en- able students to investigate the career possibilities in this field, to earn one unit toward graduation, to better appreciate the standards of work and conduct de- manded by stores, to better understand how a business operates, to see in what ways their school training might be improved and supplemented before gradua- tion, and to earn money while they learn. 1 H. Stewart, Superintendent: Jean Garrett, Treasurer-Secretaryg Ferne W. Wyant, Clerk-Secretary. Mn Blrrp, may we introduce you to the Orleans- Niagara B.C.E.S. Recognizing the need for a richer educational pro- gram for the schools of the State, Section 1958 of the Educational Law provided for the establishment of Boards of Cooperative Educat.ional Services. The pro- gram under such a board can then furnish to the schools many special teaching services on a cooperative basis which ordinarily can not be afforded or at least gainfully employed. Historically speaking, the Board of Cooperative Ed- ucational Services now serving Orleans and a portion of Niagara County was first established for Orleans Coun- ty in 1956. Later, effective February 1, 1958, the new supervisory district and Board of Cooperative Educa- tional Services for Orleans and Niagara Counties was established. A Component districts comprising the present coopera- tive system include Albion, Barker, Holley, Lyndon- ville, Bledina and Royalton Hartland Central schools. Otto J. Stewart was elected the first District Super- intendent and Executive officer of the Board. Presently, special services include: remedial reading testing, psychological guidance, speech correction, dental cor- rection, physical education instruction, driver educa- tion, music instruction, art instruction, distributive education, library supervision, and the Vocational, Industrial Cooperative VVork Experience Program. The central office for the Orleans-Niagara B.C.E.S. is lo- cated on the second floor of the hledina Public Library Building. is? .Q U f-15541 lf? . ,N Back Row: Leonard McWilliams, Mark Bradley, Erwin Horwitz. The first major event was the first time we staged our own assembly program. In our freshman year, we brought the music, folklore and costumes of many countries to Medina High School. Climaxing many weeks of rehearsals, many talented classmates participated in the musical production 'Show Boat.' Our talents have really blossomed in the music department. Five of us have at- tended the All-State Music Educators Conference Band or Choir, and one partic- ipated in the orchestra of the All-Eastern Music Conference. Scholastically we have reached high goals. As Seniors we finally succeeded in cap- turing the Arista Trophy. Twenty-five of our number were selected for membership in the National Honor Society. We can rightly be proud of the eight Regents Schol- arships winners and seven alternates. In addition to this, We have a. finalist in the National Merit Scholarship competition. ' To broaden our horizons in the fields of science, and music, we visited Niagara Chemical Division of Food, Machinery and Chemical Corporation, Rochester East- man School of Music and Cornell Aeronautical Lab at Buffalo. Our years have been filled with many profitable experiences which will be remem- bered and put into use in years to come. 50 ll. During football season, garbed in new uniforms, the band marches onto the field during half-time. Our assem- blies, Spring Concert and Honors Convocation would not be complete with- out a selection from the band. This fall they attended Cornell Band Day. As a competitive group, they have demonstrated high standards at the annual rating festival. Some of the members participate in County Band and Sectional All-State. YVarren Becton, a member of this musical organization, was selected to participate in the All- Eastern Orchestra at Atlantic City. The hledina High School Senior Band is one of lNIedina's proudest possessions. Each year the faculty sponsors a. musical group to present a high school assembly for the students, and in the evening a concert open to the public. The profits from this concert are given to seniors as a scholarship for further education. This year, we were fortunate in hearing the Fredonia Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Dr. Willet. lVIost of its members are music majors who plan to become teachers. This is the first year we have had an instrumental group, and everyone was pleased with the fine results. The Dance Band, sponsored by Mr. Heald, entertains at various assemblies and occasionally at victory dances. K ,gf ,M Farewell The time has come for parting, Mr. Blrrp. We have sin- cerely enjoyed having you visit our school and give us the opportunity to reminisce the school year 1959-60. Although our way of life is probably still strange to you, I am sure you are departing with the supreme experience of knowing the warm feeling of friendship that we of lNI.H.S. all know so well. hlay you have a pleasant journey. Good-by, lNIr. Blrrp! As his space saucer rises into the unknown and uncon- quered, it is time for another departure. For the class of '60 this is probably one of the greatest farewells of our lives. We must say good-by to high school and to all the fun, learning and growing pains to embark on a vessel into the future where we will discover the unknown and conquer the unconquered. Although we all cherish high school memories and friends, we're not afraid of the future. Our relationship to the past, present, and future should be as the poet Longfellow wrote: Look not mournfully into the Past. It comes not back again. VVisely improve the Present. It is thine. Go forth to meet the shadowy Future, without fear, and with manly heartf, Sincerely, Paulette Wienke, Editor-in-Chief I D if rdf?
