Social Studies World War ll has brought, with it a new and urgent need for increased knowled,ue of global geography and praetieal history. .X thorough knowledge ol' pret'eding history makes past events applit-able to eurrent, problems. Soeialized reeilation, forum diseussions, de- bates, amd dramatization of events It-nd interest to elassroom reeitations. Books on The Story of the Constitution illustrated by pictures or drawings, earloons based on various Iopies in Amt-riean history, posters, and a Problems ol' lDemoerat'y ' bulletin board have been projeets earried out during the eurrent year. ln this way, the student has aequired a new eoneeptitm ol' world problems. 'llhe study tll':hlllt'I'lt'1lll history has gixen the sludenl am appret-iatitm of his heritage, a ltnowlt-dge ol' lIIIlYt'l'S2ll problems, :md the foundation l'or the solution ol' many ol' them, as wt-II as the fundamentals ol' good t-itizenship. Foreign Languages The praetit-ability of the study of foreign languages is evideneed more than ever today at tht' time of a universal global war with battles raging in so many foreign theaters. Three years eaeh of Latin and Frent-h ure ollered to Medina High Sehool students with a eourse for beginners, an intermediate, and an advanced eourse. Frt-nt-h espeeially is used voeally during the present etmlliet for military purposes as well as a source of employment. Latin is frequently employed in the study of medieine and as an aid to a better understanding of English litera- ture and speeeh. By the study ol' past history of the Freneh and the tiallit' peoples, the student finds many experienees and theories applieable to today's problems. Pupils have studied possible invasion points l'or the Fortress liurope, thus eonneeting the study of languages with the eurrent global warfare. lflaine N, Corse-tle Dorothea Dex ins l.. By emphasizing mathematics in relation to life experiences and stressing the importance of information and concepts, principles and rela- tionships, computation and manipulation, since these are used in thinking and in arriving at conclusions of intelligent living, the mathe- matics department, stresses the development of the individual. Since Pearl Harbor even greater stress has been placed upon accuracy in the fundamental processes since all the services and industry emphasize its importance. A revision of prob- lem situations to stress war activities has been accentuated. Many problems are based upon ligures issued in a teachers' bulletin by the Treasury Department for just such use. Skill in the use of intricate mathematical computations is especially emphasized in the advanced courses. Courses in introduction to business, book- keeping, accounting, commercial law, type- writing, shorthand, and retail selling are offered to students by the business department.. By lectures, demonstration, discussion, and soeialized recitation, the pupil learns the funda- mentals and details of commercial subjects. Because the secretarial practice group is ar- ranged to follow office procedure as nearly as possible, the student develops desirable person- ality traits and initiative. ln addition to regular exercises, the advanced bookkeeping course carries out the complete transactions of a specific business firm for a liseal period thus giving a realistic, uninterrupted course of study. The retailing eourse is supplemented by actual work in community stores. This enables the pupil to participate in over-the-counter selling and eo-operating, not only with the customer but also with the other employees. All in all, the business department strives to develop a spirit of eo-operation, initiative, and desirable personality traits. 'allzernalics-life blood fy' war and peace--is a popular field. Courses in general seienee, biology, ehelnis- try, and physics have plaeed speeial emphasis on those topies that have direet applieation to the War program: explosives, antisepties, me- ehanies, optieal inst, rument,s, sound, prineiples ol' airplanes, high altitude equipment, and eleelrieal deviees. lixperirnenls, demonslralions, diseussions, readings, and leetnres aid the student in learn- ing the basis of seientilie knowledge. Speeial eoneenttration on advaneed seienee eourses is a result ofa war whose moves are dependent on intrieate ealeulalions. Students are urged to stud y the seienees more than ever before in preparation for future Work. lirrnie Nl. The Library Both the public' and the sehool libraries olfer reading and referenee material on a large variety of subjeets. lp-to-date pamphlets, magazines, and books are available to interested students and to the puhlie. With time al a minimum. students realize the neeessily and praetieability of being able lo lind desired information themselves. ln an ell'orl to equip students with this knowledge library instruetion is given. A large number of ex perienees emerging from the war have ollered the reader detailed ae- eounts ol' major battles, operations, and mili- tary lac-ties. Students are eneouraged lo read and enjoy books, both lietion and non-fiction. Altraetive displays of books, bookjaekets, maps, eharts, and pietures have provided a useful and attiraetive baekground for their studies. Home Economics HS.. lVl.A. lleallh Home Economics Allendrmce Cafeleria Homemaklng Health Home economics classes have been estab- lished for both the cooking and the sewing departments. In each ease, the latest home- making methods are used in an effort to operate the home efficiently. By lecture, discussion, demonstration, and movies, students obtain a better and more vivid means of self-expression in creative work. The sewing department consists not only of actual garment construction but also of the study of the way to wear clothes to better ad- vantage. Nutrition, canning, and food preserva- tion, have been emphasized especially with reference to rationing and present shortages. The conservative but nutritional use of food and the construction of made-over garments teach students the necessity and practicability of economical use of materials. Although the homemaking department is taught from a practical and technical point of view, its major aim is the encouragement of homemaking as a career and the teaching of applicable, helpful fundamentals pertaining to all phases of the home. w lo enlerlain-silver, china, glassware, and conversalion: all play a part. This year the New York State liducation Department has mandated a health course as a requirement for graduation. Communicable diseases, First Aid, and mental hygiene are studied by sophomores, juniors, and seniors with classes meeting twice each month during Friday's Activities Period. The student undergoes necessary physical and mental adjustments through medical care. A physical examination is given each student every year, and necessary adjustments reported to the parents. An audiometer test is also given each student. The Health Department has adapted itself to the war program by promoting physical fit- ness and First Aid courses. A Surgical Supplies Corps also aids by making numerous surgical dressings. A Junior Bed Cross Convalescent Loan Closet is available to those students who have a long period of convalescence. A bed table, a six-way pillow, and a radio are some of the items included in the closet. When war has called so many doctors and nurses into service, students have realized the necessity for physical well-being and have risen to the situation. Pass the Ammunition Not all Americans are in a position to shoulder arms and man our ships, planes, and tanks, but those back home can get right into this war by passing ammunition to the boys on the firing line. The men and women and the boys and girls on the production front can furnish no more effective ammuniton than food. Goals for 1944 call for the largest production of food in the history of the country. This means big jobs for the farmer and processor. and it also means big jobs for people- young and old-who are in a position to work on farms or in food factories. With the farmer, the food processor and those who can work on the farm and in the factory all co-operating they will pass the ammunition that is so necessary to win this war and bring peace. H. J.
