Spir’ it (spir'it), n. [OF. or L.; OF. espirit, esperit, fr. L. spiritus; akin to L. spirare to breathe, blow.] 1. Often pl. temper or disposition of mind; mood; as to be in good spirits. 2. Stimulated or high spirits; vivacity, ardor, quick resentment, courage, etc; as to reply with spirit. 3. Enthusiastic loyalty; as high school spirit. 4. (Cap.) The third person of the Trinity; Holy Spirit. 5. A fairy, sprite, or elf. 6. The incorporeal part of man: present in spirit, though absent in body. 7. The capacity for vigorous activity; available power. 8. An adequate or abundant amount of energy. 9. Having or showing mettle, courage, vigor, liveliness, etc. 10. Absorbing or controlling possession of mind by any interest or pursuit; lively interest. 11. An occupation, activity, or pursuit in which such interest is shown. 12. Zealous: ardently active, devoted or diligent. 13. A devotion: profound dedication; consecration. B. Earnest attach- ment to a cause. C. An assignment or appropriation to any purpose, cause, etc. 14. Dedication: to devote wholly and earnestly, as to some purpose or person. 15. Fervor: great warmth and earnestness of feeling. 16. Active: a liveliness and briskness in accomplishing something. B.
