SENIORS hese ... of the Beginning Yes, we finally made it to the top! First through split sessions as freshmen because of a lack of space, and then again our Senior year due to the lack of energy; not our energy, but fuel energy. The Great Blizzard closed the schools, but we still maintained our partial sanity. The four-year struggle was tough, but the tough got going, and the Class of '77 had some great times that we will never forget. We've had winning and losing teams, and our girls basketball team will be long remembered. Math class was boring, but remember how great the bell sounded when it finally rang? And who could forget the many doughnut runs to Buehlers? Throughout our four years at Medina, there were always many people backing our class. Mrs. Parman, whom we all owe a great deal to, and our class officers have also done a great job for us. The class officers were Linda Hoffmann, Treasurer; Cheryl Spendlove, Secretary; Dot Klopp, Vice President; and Peggy Polomsky, President. As we walk out the doors of Medina High for the last time, we'll be entering a whole new world of learning, one MHS has tried to prepare us for. Though life changes, we must go with confidence and accept what must be, and not look back at what we have left behind, but rather at what the future holds in store for us. The prom, originally scheduled for May 14 at the community center, was May 21 in the gymnasium due to a scheduling conflict. The gym was decorated very nicely by the Junior class with blown up candids of seniors and many exotic plants and statues. The couples were entertained from 9 to midnight by Rapscallion, a group that combined fast and slow tunes for a successful evening. Brett Chronister and Connie Bender were crowned King and Queen of the Senior class. After the prom, many couples changed from their rented tuxes and formals into T-shirts and faded jeans to enjoy the hot night with after-prom activities. a F The 1977 Junior-Senior Banquet was held in the decorated cafeteria, which was done in soft pastels to fit the theme, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” The evening started off with dinner being served by the Sophomore class. The meal was prepared by parents. After dinner, the auditorium was filled for the skit on the Seniors. The orchestra played “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” and Sherry Myers got to sing her long awaited encore from S.P.I.C.E. The program was brought to a close with the presentation of awards to well-deserving seniors. Somewhere Over The Rainbow ... For Homecoming, the float building was slightly sluggish, but eventually got done when everybody quit watch- ing out for Seniors to egg or whatever. Although the Juniors did not win the float competition, they are planning to be well prepared next year as Seniors. There were many Juniors selling special candles during the Junior Class Candle Sale in the fall. They sold a total of 2,570 candles. They used the money for the Banquet and the Junior-Senior Prom, which they were in charge of. As for finding a building for Prom, there was some difficulty. The only buildings big enough were Chippewa Lake and the Medina County Fairgrounds. The Fairgrounds became available in time for the Prom and preparations were made. Prom was held on the 21st of May and the Banquet on the 20th of May. Rapscallion was the group to which they danced. The OH HENRY candy bar sale took place before Christmas in the Square, but the sale was hampered by the school being closed during the bad weather and gas shortage. The candy bars were then sold during our half-day classes. Zimmerman Sophomores This year’s sophomore class was rather busy. In Septem- ber, they started with $0 in the treasury, and fixed that only a short time before Homecoming. Because they had to decorate and pay for the decorations, they started in mid- October with two bake sales. And to make sure that they had enough money to cover the cost, they decided to have a car wash. Car washes were held two Saturdays before Homecoming on the coldest, windiest days of the year. It also snowed! The car wash was a success, even though Dave Haddad sprayed Mark Pence with the hose and Mark took off after Dave with a bucket of soapy water. After that, everyone was wet! The theme for Homecoming was “Remember When” and the decorations were taken care of by Sonya Phillips, Diane Talbert, and Gina Nemes, all of whom helped to make the dance a success. In February, the class sold buttons supporting our girls’ basketball team — the Mean Green Machine! Jeff Carnes, class president, says: “To sum it up, I feel that we did an excellent job of representing our school and promoting class unity.” Pic- tured at right are President Jeff Carnes, Vice President Donna Warren, Secretary Jill Huddilston, and Treasurer Laura Finley. a, 2) ue A K. Baltimore Freshmen This year ’s Freshmen class has been ex- tremely active in their first year in the Senior High School. During Home- coming, the Freshmen class showed their SPIRIT by building a terrific bonfire. In the fall, some of the Freshmen raked leaves and donated the money to the Student Council in order to pay for the Homecoming dance. The class started their treasury with a bake sale and con- tinued the expansion of their treasury by selling candy at the Freshmen football and basketball games. The officers this year are, right to left, President — Denise Schmith, Vice President — Tonya Whar- ton, Secretary — Wendy Reitzel, and Treasurer — Debbie Hefner. These officers and the following Representa- tives have helped greatly in promoting the success of this year’s Freshmen class. Representatives are as follows: Julie Huddilston, Ann Kirchner, Doug Pelton, Nancy Robnett, and Marty Wible. Quote by President Denise Schmith: “All in all, the class is really great, and I am so glad to be a part of it.” T. Barth J. Basko I NE IE Oe mt Hm ON OAL LEGIT. ty malt + ee ame eG A. Bayne S. Tense- ness was felt throughout Medina as preparations were made for the big game. The Juniors and Seniors were not to be found at home during this time. They were off being busy little bees and working on their floats. As the final weeks before the game approached, sixteen Senior girls were nominated to represent this quaint little village, but only “one” could be queen. The girls were Heidi Albrecht, Karen Amico, Lisa Bednar, Cathy Easton, Karen Eisenhart, Beth Freese, Janice Hosick, Lynn Jackson, Mary Jaeger, Jenny Jodway, Shann Kirkham, Lori Koenig, Barb Phillips, Peggy Polomsky, Cindy Prochaska, and Cheryl Spendlove. During the final week of Homecoming, the Senior Class chose - four lovely young maidens for the court. They were Cathy Easton, Jenny Jodway, Shann Kirkham, and Barb Phillips. - Also during that week, Pep Club decorated the school, the lockers, the stadium, the players’ houses, and anything else they could get their hands on. The Junior Class sold bright yellow mums for the occasion and at long last, the finishing touches were put on the floats. The Junior float, with its old-fashioned car and old-time football player dressed in the early scarlet and grey Medina colors was acceptable, but the Senior float was by far the superior of the two. Dorothy, Toto, the Tin Man, Scarecrow, and the Wicked Witch of the West, all added spirit to the Seniors’ winning float. Its gigantic teddy bear and storybook characters were helpful reminders of everyone’s childhood. Now, as the Seniors won the float competition, the Juniors consoled themselves by thinking, “Oh well, there’s always next year.” Senior Class President, Peggy Polomsky accepted the trophy for the winning float. As the evening’s events progressed, Shann K irkham was proclaimed the 1976 Home- coming Queen. The crowd was almost as excited as Shann. The football tri-captains presented Shann with her bouquet and said a few encouraging words about the next night’s game. To cap off the evening’s events, the freshmen built a bonfire to symbolize the burning of the Westlake Demons Remember When Left page: Upper left: The winning Senior float. The players talked among themselves while the fans did likewise. They all knew the snow and cold would have an effect on how the game was played, but that it would not determine the outcome. By 7, the candidates and their escorts had arrived at the windy stadium to pin on their corsages and get ready for the annual introduction. They lined up on the visitor’s side to march through the “M” the band had formed on the field. As the band played “If,” the candidates and escorts walked between the “M” formation and lined up on the home side to await the crowning of the beautiful queen, Shann Kirkham. The previous year’s queen, the stunning Liz Kuehn, was announced as she and her escort came across the field. Liz then crowned the beautiful Shann. Medina High School now had the devastating Shann Kirkhan _as their 1976 Homecoming queen. Shann and her court, Cathy, Jenny, and Barb, sat on the sidelines cheering for their team. Their cheering inspired the Bees and kept the Westlake game close. Ken Alber, the quarterback, was injured and Mitch Lehman finished the game. Though the Bees played one of their best games, they lost to a tougher Westlake team by a score of 14-6. The band, Backseat Romance, played long and loud. After what seemed like an eternity, the queen arrived. She was crowned and received her crown graciously. Shann and her escort, Dave Haarmeyer, danced the annual Queen’s Dance, and all who attended agreed that Shann represented the school and community perfectly. She was the “one.” On Sunday, the quiet little village of Medina was quiet once again, and everyone lived happily ever after. “Remember when... ”? They always put the loss off and worked extra hard for the following game. The practices always found the spirit quite high as the team prepared. New plays, old plays, and trick plays were attempted and they usually worked, but their always seemed to be something missing. One week the passing would be fantastic, but the penalties would nullify the gains. Every week, the team overcame their previous mistakes and they would usually not happen again. The work paid off as the Medina Varsity Battling Bees won their final game with confidence in themselves and pride in their school. Medina’s Junior Varsity Battling Bees had an exceptionally good season. Their quarterbacks, Brian Grider and Mitch Lehman, worked together as a team to push them to a winning record. They played mostly Saturday morning games with two Saturday night games and one Monday afternoon game. The Junior Varsity team had a final record of 6 wins, 2 losses, and 1 tie. The Homecoming king was Kelly Green, the beautiful cheerleader who cheered his team on to their two victories. Against Buckeye, the Bees dominated the entire game. Buck- eye played dirty football, but our Lady Bees showed them how to win with pride. The Cloverleaf girls played at Me- dina’s Homecoming and played a good game; but could not overcome Medina’s spunky Bees as the Bees showed who was Best! The Powder Puff team drew quite a few fans. The season started in December as the “Mean Green Ma- chine” demolished West Tech 83-38 and Canton McKinley 74- 34. They proceeded to destroy, as the Queen Bees won a Christmas tourney in Parma against Parma Senior and Nor- mandy. January brought an inexperienced Cloverleaf team to Medina as the Bees scored a record high of 98 to beat the Colts 98-23. The snow and cold weather shut down the school 102 and Queen Bees for four weeks, but when they emerged, they were ranked 2 in the State AAA UPI Coaches ratings. They then beat three SWC schools before a SWC showdown with Bay Village. A record crowd of 1,345 screaming Medinians encouraged the girls to a 68-58 victory. The Mighty Bees continued winning and another record crowd viewed the demolishing of Akron St. Vincent-Mary as Lori Koenig scored 34 points. Three days later, they wrapped up the SWC over Rocky River and were on their way to Valley Forge for Sectional and District championships. While at Forge, they beat Parma Senior 73-28, Brecksville S6-23, Normandy 74-51, and Lincoln West 69-50. The next step towards Columbus was the Regionals, which was held at Sandusky High. Besides 2 ranking in the State throughout the season, the Mean Green Machine had many other accomplishments. They posted the second perfect regular season in modern school history, won back-to-back SWC, Sectional, and Dis- trict championships. They were the first County and AAA team to reach the regional finals for two consecutive seasons. They were also the only team in Ohio to place four players on the All-Ohio AAA girls team. Lori Koenig was named to the second team, Kim Alber to the special mention list, and Sherry Myers and Lisa Fitch to the honorable mention list. Sherry Myers also made SVC Player o f the Year, in addition to the Cleveland Press 1 Dream Team. Sherry, Lisa, Kim, i and Lori also made the SWC All-Stars while Lynn Jackson made honorable mention. Individual performance was the so-called motto of this year’s varsity track team. Practice started in early March with only 37 members. Running took place in the Junior High gym while the weather was inclement and weeks later, the first indoor meets were run. Medina defeated Midpark in the first indoor meet and lost to Berea in the second. April 5 was the first outdoor meet at Buckeye where the snow and the Bucks outmanned the Bees. The fair-weather Bees won their first meet at Fairview in 75° sunshine. In the Berea Relays, Medina placed 10th out of 29 teams with outstanding performances in the Weightmen events. Medina went on to the Copley Relays, Westlake Relays, and Nordonia Relays, where stiff competition got the team ready for the conference meet. In the Sectionals, Brett Chronister threw the shot 50’8” to qualify for Districts. Seniors Joe Dooley and Steve Fesko ran the 440 and 880 yard run respectively and won most of the meets. Dooley also pole vaulted 13 feet this season. With only 12 seniors, 9 juniors, and 12 sophomores, the track team should grow and improve in the next few years. The dedicated cast played to a full house on April 14, 15, and 16 in the auditorium. Mr. Carey and Mrs. Burke directed the play and opened each performance with stirring renditions from Rodger and Hammerstein’s musical “Carousel.” The story opens in a New England coast town where Mrs. Mullin runs her carousel with the help of her playboy barker, Billy Bigelow. The jealous Mrs. Mullin fires Billy because it is here that he meets Julie Jordan, a mill worker to whom he finds himself attracted. Billy and Julie’s marriage starts Carrie, Julie’s friend, think- ing more seriously of her wonderful Mr. Snow. Because Billy can’t find work, he and Julie move in with Nettie Fowler. After finding out that Julie is going to have a baby, Billy and Jigger Craigin, his friend from the water- front, scheme to rob David Bascombe, the owner of the sewing mill. They decide to pull the job after the clambake while they were supposed to be hunting for treasures which were hidden each year for festivities. At the close of the clambake, Jigger and Billy leave Julie to await the arrival of Mr. Bascombe. Scheming to rob Mr. Bascombe, Billy planned on tricking Bascombe by asking him for the time while Jigger would stab Mr. Bascombe and they both would grab the money CHARACTERS In Order of Appearance Carrie Pipperidge ..........scscsescessesssvsssnseanssonseaneeanscarsansesseeneestserseesscesoee DOCHE Klopp Julie Jordon on... sseseceesssccesssaseccncncneccessacececesseescssszavenensnoeeeesaee Cindy Prochaska Dirt Kirt linen eta seer oe eee hol terneun een Valerie Drockway Billy Bigelow ..........scsccscssesssseseesesneneeeesesneneeseanesesenssananensescanenceeeanenense ney Stan Bunch ASt, POLICEMAN erases crerssescccsess Series Sean Krosse TAVIGTR ASCOT De eee eer ee ee rioters t reeveen MLLKG; LEWIS INGtLIES OW let reser senctrnse Gaeterssontesecs Gucsereontiiacysscsseaeaesoast ..... But their plan had many unexpected loopholes. For one, they hadn’t planned on Mr. Bascomb carrying a gun, which was a first. When Jigger attacked Bascombe, he 140 pulled a gun, and Jigger took off. Billy couldn’t face Julie or a jail sentence, so he stabbed himself. Just before he died, Julie arrived and tried to comfort him. Billy awakens on the threshold of Heaven. The Heavenly Friend explains to Billy that he isn’t good enough to enter Heaven yet, but can prove himself by going down to Earth for one day and doing a good deed. Fifteen minutes in Heaven meant fifteen years on Earth. Julie had already had a baby girl, who is now facing graduation. Louise is a lonely girl, persecuted by her friends because of her “bad” father. As Billy sees Louise’s suffering, he decides to visit Earth. He took a star from the entrance of the golden gate as a gift. Billy, being a hard-headed stubborn man, never mentioned to Julie that he loved her, but she could sense that he really did. | They could only see him when he wanted them to. Julie found the star and knew he had been there to comfort | Louise and talk to her. ‘As the graduation took place, Louise was sullen. The speaker, Dr. Seldon, told them all to lead their own lives and not depend on the success of their parents. ‘Ss it Ro = ? it. Tee, Billy showed for the graduation and went to Louise and told her that this was true, and she was happier. Then, he went over to Julie and told her he loved her, and she was happier, too. With appro ximately 300 students from Activity Choir, Varsity Choir, Concert Choir, Swing Choir, and Star- dusters on stage, and the seats in the auditorium filled, it turned out to be an enjoyable event for everyone who attend- ed. The theme was “A Tapestry of Modern Music.” The special acts varied from the very serious, such as “Send in the Clowns,” sung by Karen Isenhart, to the act that got everyone laughing, “Gossip.” In the middle of the show, a quiet and seriousness took over the audience as the Swing Choir sang “Abraham, Martin and John” while slides were being shown of these people who did so much for our country: Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King and John F. Kennedy. The seriousness subsided, however, as Dot Klopp swung into “Bandstand Boogie.” The closing was a hit feature of Showtime ’77 because the entire company performed “I Write the Songs.” ee { 4 | i 143 PEERS ms ae CLUBS MARR RRS ER ay HART Pp et 146 The Medinian members put a lot of time and effort into making this yearbook the best that Medina has ever had. They had to keep their sanity through many complications and total confusion. The time and effort to start the book off right wasn’t enough; they had to keep it going through the whole year. Making layouts, writing copy, and taking pictures were just a few of the things they did. In July, four staff members went to Gettysburg to layout and design the book. In August, the staff gathered to sell ads and get their sections assigned before September. After all the pros and cons were _ weighed, we decided that it was all worth the time and effort to see the result of the best production of a yearbook. Medinian Row 1: K. Christian, P. Polomsky, D. A HVE aa 160 This year’s Student Council committee made its best effort to make this year a memorable one. They have had a hand in a lot of the main events. Some of them were Homecoming, the Mock convention, Teachers Appreciation Week, the donkey basketball game and they sponsored many dances. They concern themselves with conferences on the absenteeism. Their contribution to the orientation for the new students was greatly accepted. For the great work that has been done, the credit goes to the Student Council. The Advisor, Miss Cowden; President, Val Doerner, Vice President, Lisa Polo; and Treasurer, Ron Bunch. Drama Club’s main efforts of the year were producing shows such as the play, “The Mouse That Roared.” S.P.I.C.E., and the musical, “Carousel.” The club is made up of the crews, along with some of the acting roles. Grand Fenwick, the microscopic little “mouse” of a country declares war on the United States. Queen Gloriana the XII was desperate in her hopes of saving the expeditionary forces led by Tully Bascom to the U.S. Tully is sent to New York in broad daylight, wearing full battle dress and attacking with bows and arrows. Tully succeeds in capturing General Snippet, his daughters, Profes- sor Kokintz, and the dangerous Q Bomb. Upon his return, Tully and his prisoners are presented to Queen Gloriana, who explains that Tully wasn’t supposed to win, but to lose. Grand Fenwick could then receive war reparations and be saved from bankruptcy! The President of the U.S. sends the Secretary of State, Ches- ter Brown, to negotiate affairs with Gloriana, but she de- mands 1 million dollars and an annual tribute of 12 dozen pomegranate then that he cannot alter the function of the Q Bomb; thus, it makes Grand Fenwick the most powerful country in the world! The Basketball Intramural team, com- posed of four members, played at the first three-man Christmas tournament this year. Medina’s team lost only one out of 18 games, proving we've got spirit! The school intramural basketball champs record this season was 13-0, set- ting a new undefeated intramural record for Medina. The Kassel Keepers, aptly named after Captain Curt Kassel, were chosen in the free agent draft, which precedes each intramural season. The season was led by juniors Joe Bilinovich and Jay Dunn in their sweep past all 13 opponents. Scott Varney saved the un- blemished record by sending the cham- pionship game into overtime with a last second shot at the end of the game. Upper left: We use Crest — 28% fewer teeth. Every year the Seniors have had the privilege of toilet papering the yard, soaping windows and making life hard for the underclassmen. This year, they did all of this and more. One of their stunts was to sleep outside in tents, which many did. They hung signs over the wall and put the winning teddy bear from the Senior float on top of the building. They barricaded the main entrance to the school and inside, they filled the commons with hay. The faculty room and Mrs. Parman’s office had been filled with paper! Mrs. Parman was so pleased with her newly-decorated office, that she wrote thank you notes on her paper! Underclassmen spent the day cleaning the building, while Seniors went home to take showers and catch 40 winks after their night of pranks! 67 Cedar Point Jumps with Seniors Upper left: Janice looks like she’s got THIS animal trained. Lower right: Goofy seniors take a parting shot! Tuesday, May 31, Cedar Point was bombarded with ap- proximately 240 seniors who spirited away the day till about 9 that night. One bus left the high school that morning; the rest of the class took advantage of their freedom and drove up to Sandusky to spend the day at their parents’ cottages by the lake, or in their boats. Mr. George, Mr. Peters, Mrs. Parman and Mrs. Zeff accom- panied the group for one of the most fun days all of the “se EN ar ) MUST BE ° seniors have had since their prank. The weather coopera- ted and the day was sun-filled until some late afternoon showers drove seniors into the nearest hotdog stands. Mrs. Parman, a big chicken, had to be prompted to go on the more wild rides — the Corkscrew being one. But after her first ride, she was a seasoned Cedar Pointer, and enjoyed the rest of the day with the best of them! opring Fever Upper left: I like Econ better upside down. Some events attracted more than others but there was always at least one faithful Medinian in the stands. Thanks Mom! Now for all the thanks. I’d personally like to thank and congratulate Miss Dianne Taylor for putting up with my sarcasm for the last two years. We were both new at the yearbook business two years ago and now, along with our fine (great) staff, we have put together the best Medinian ever. Lynn Palamountain moved to Medina in May 1976. She thought she knew everything about how to put a yearbook together: she did. I learned just about everything from her. Janice Hosick. What can I say? She’s a very comical photographer who knows her business. If you hadn't noticed, all the pictures have captions: the good clear pictures with the good captions are works of hers. Thanks Jan! Our other photographers are very good, but Jan is a Senior. Sorry Jane. Thanks for all the pictures. I would like to thank all of my friends for just being what they are. Special thanks go to the Karabinds, Abell’s, Gardner’s, Brian, Leroy, Annie, Rubee, Dad and most of all, I would like to thank the most beautiful woman in the world, Mom. I think you're the greatest!
