ROW 2: Ralph Waite, Robert Smith, Henry Jaeger, and Robert A. Hedrick Robert Peters Dean of Boys Majorie Parman Dean of Girls Roger Auker Dean of Students Administration and Faculty 13 Mr. Rollie Platz, Athletic Director Mr. Robert Gaume, Vocational Counselor Secretaries: Mrs. Poetsch, Mrs. Taylor, Mrs. Boyer It is only too clear that this school, any school, cannot survive without help from a group of people who must also withstand a great deal of abuse from the cynically-minded of the school community. They are the bridge between calm and chaos. Medina is fortunate in that it has an administra- tion and faculty who are attentive to the current problems and who make no pretense to infalli- bility. There is none of the “ivory tower” attitude that other schools might have to suffer with. It tries to relate to the problems brought before it and, if not in agreement, will at least give con- structive reasons for the decisions made. Another group of people does its work quietly and diligently. It is this group, the workers in the cafeteria, the janitors, and counselors, which keeps any school moving, in the most physical sense of the word. They feed us, clean up, try to solve our problems, and often go unthanked by the ungrateful. We owe them a great deal of cred- it. Maybe someday they will receive it. Cafeteria Workers: Front Row, left to right: Mrs. Rodgers, Mrs. Fry, Mrs. Karaffa, Mrs. Kern. Second Row, left to right: Mrs. Summers, Mrs. Fiser. Back row: Mrs. Palinchik, Mrs. Delisle, Mrs. Trainor, Mrs. Luethy, Mrs. Failor Maintenance: Charles Jacot, Mack Whitman, Tom Leister, Roy Haas. Absent when picture was taken: Alverta Shelton Psychological Staff: Mrs. Morrison, Mrs. Larson, Mr. Shuman 15 Mrs. Sellers, Miss Trares, Miss Devine, Mrs. Elrick, Mrs. Burke, Mr. Elrick, Mrs. Stahnke, Mrs. Anderson, Miss Lucas, Mrs. Neptune. Absent: Mrs. Heiges. Librarians: Mrs. Mary Hubbard and Mrs. Marie Wolfe check up on the latest in good books. Wonder what they’re about! If, for no other reason, we study English to learn about other uses besides ob- scenity. The MHS English department offers all kinds of backgrounds for its students, from Chaucer and Shakespeare to Pearl Buck to business English and composition. 16 Administration and Faculty English “And if you’re all good little kiddies, I’ll only give you 46 essay questions on Lord of the Flies,” says Mrs. Elrick. We all know that Heritage class can be nerve-racking it times, but Mrs. Nep- tune seems to have gone berserk! Miss Lucas “grins and bears it” during class. Administration and Faculty 17 Mathematics “Alright, who threw the eraser out the window?” asks Mrs. Whitman. Mr. Haas, Miss Cross, Mr. Brewer, Mr. Paidas, Mrs. Whitman, Mr. Insprucker Mathematics has always been a necessity, but in our modern world it is impossible to live without it. Medina offers a large variety of courses from general math to Advanced Placement Math including all new phases of learning. “You can’t divide, that’s your problem,” says Mr. Haas. “That’s the longest problem I’ve ever seen,” exclaims Miss Cross. Administration and Faculty 19 Miss Lemon leads a class discussion in Earth Science “That’s the last time anyone is going to put a frog in my pocket,” says Mr. Walker. 20 Administration and Faculty Science Miss Lemon, Mr. Alexander, Mr. Graham, Mr. Robson, Mr. Walker, Mr. Swinglish Science has grown enormously in the past few years as we continue to learn more and more of our beginnings, our future, and our accomplishments in this world and others. Through the science depart- ment MHS tries to let us know what is happening and why. Mr. Robson proves that the new age of learning encompasses much besides books and paper. Administration and Faculty 21 Mrs. Limpert, Mr. Butler, Mr. George, Mr. Cooksey, Mr. Dailey, Mrs. Demuth. Absent when picture was taken: Miss Huddle, Mr. Vargo. Social Studies Mr. George has a unique sense of humor. Even American History is funny! We must learn to know ourselves, and this is accomplished only by relating what has occurred in the past with what is occurring in the present and the future. Social studies gives us this opportunity. Our deeds and thoughts will only prove fruitful if they surpass and improve upon what has benn made by our forefathers. 22 Administration and Faculty Students at MHS are required to pursue courses in American history, civics, and economics through which we come to be integral parts of that society we so wish to improve. For the more industrious student, courses in world history, psychology, soci- ology, help to create a deeper understanding of himself. Health, also required, relates a sense of knowledge of one’s physical self and is also a requirement for a diploma. ' 1 ■ 1 € 1 I HL jjr Mr. Cooksey is one of the new additions to the MHS fac- ulty. He proves in this picture that actions as well as words help to relate the facets of sociology and psychology. “And now, please take out a sheet of paper and write an essay on your reasons for taking civics. Do not include the fact that it is required,” says Mrs. Limpert. Administration and Faculty 23 Foreign Languages Mr. Millor, Mr. Baker, Mrs. Zimmerman, Mrs. Kellogg. Absent when picture was taken: Miss Kitska. Mrs. Couts replaced Mr. Baker December 14. Mr. Baker leads a lively (?) French class. Mr. Millor keeps a watchful eye on a study hall. 24 Administration and Faculty Mr. Eisanmann, Mr. Barbor, Mr. Cheuvront, Mr. Celidonio Industrial Arts To a degree, languages and industrial arts are somewhat alike. They are both of a practical nature and are meant to be used. They have both been very necessary throughout the ages and will continue to be so in the increasingly hectic and international world we live in. “Since when does a straight line go in a curve? Mr. Cheuvront of Tim Wilhelm. ' 4 § Mr. Puehler, Medina’s John Philip Sousa Humanities is a relatively new classification at MHS and one of the most popular. It involves the fine arts, the physical arts, and the practical arts. The fine arts and physical arts give students the opportunity to use their creativity and do some- thing for themselves as well as others. The special education groups prepare those people for responsibility in life as well as for future creativity. “Can I stop smiling now,” asks Mrs. Rasmussen. Mrs. Lynne Smith, girls’ phys ed teacher 26 Administration and Faculty Humanities Seated: Mrs. Starr, Mrs. Streett, Mrs. Powers, Mrs. Rasmussen. Standing: Mr. Platz, Mr. Bixler, Mr. Heyburn, Mr. Carey, Mr. Puehler. Administration and Faculty 27 Vocational and Business Seated: Mrs. Ettling, Mrs. Jividen, Mrs. Toth, Mrs. Oates. Standing: Mr. Holdener, Mr. O’Connor, Mr. Phillips, Mr. Calich, Mr. Calich, Mr. Weygandt, Mr. Hathaway. Absent: Mrs. Schafer The vocational and business departments are the most practical in the school. They give ample background to those students who wish to work im- mediately after high school and who do not plan to go to college. The addition of a freshman work pro- gram gives an early start for those who need it. Mr. Wells seems a bit startled by our camera. Mrs. Oates seems to be saying “Get out of my kitchen.” Student Aids In a complex high school such as ours, it is increasingly difficult for such in- stitutions to rely solely on payed help to get all the “Dirty Work” done. Here we pay tribute to the consciencious few who are constantly mocked by the lazy many. Needless to say they are to be congratulated for, if nothing else, their simple care about their school. Thanks! Student Aids 29 Frosh Fight Fire With Fire This year’s freshmen class ex- pressed their class enthusiasm through the building of one of the largest Homecoming bonfires in Medina’s history. It is to be noted that they further proved their spirit by building a second bon- fire when the first met a fiery death prior to Homecoming fes- tivities. This second one, built in a single afternoon, by far sur- passed the grandeur of the first. Besides their abounding spirit our frosh provided sports thrills with excellent football and basketball teams and the first Medina freshmen wrestling team. FRESHMEN CLASS OFFICERS: J. The year started out as a good one with wins over the three biggest SWC rivals, Bay, North Olmsted, and Westlake. The Frosh Bees went on to defeat every SWC team and end the season undefeated. This team had an offensive average of 29 ppg, and a defensive average of 2.8 ppg. This has been the best season for the freshmen since 1967. The biggest win of the season was over a powerful Bay team to give the Bees their undefeated season. This team looks to have the best future of any team in Medina football history. Football 39 J. V. Between the raw, unrefined musicianship of a junior high music program and the polished results of high school music lies a period crucial to the development of musical talent. Im- proper treatment of this period could lead to dormancy and lack of interest in excelling in the field. Medina is fortunate to have an excellent freshman music program designed to provide the needed instruction and experience vital to good musical production. The ac- tivity band meets every day to prepare itself for the years of serious music ahead of them. It performs several times per year in public and occasionally travels with the freshman football team to lead them on to victory. In the late winter members also have the oppor- tunity of displaying their talents in competition with others in the solo and ensemble con- tests held. Activity Band 45 1970-1971 Musical Bees 46 Marching Band Marching Band Majorettes: Annette Hoelzer, Karen Wiles, Sherri Qnati, Karen Houston, Claudia Mc- Comas. Back Row — Drum Major Ron Maitland. What would a football game be without a rousing tune from a highly trained band? Nothing. Medina is fortunate to have a superb band under an expert director, Mr. Terry Puehler. Through the years we have con- tinually been treated to some of the finest bands in the state, not to mention the conference or the county. A smartly outfitted band marches out on Homecoming Night. The Beeliners have completed their second successful year as a dance and drill team. This year’s activities included performances during halftime shows, bake sales, and selling Medina pen- nants. Twenty-two girls made up the Beeliner squad this year, almost doubling last year’s team. Under the direction of Mrs. Carol Lenk, the team spent many hours work- ing out their routines to perfec- tion. The result of their hard work was appreciated by all. 48 Clubs Officers: J. All of these projects required a combination of many long hours and hard work. Other traditions which the Juniors enter include the manage- ment of the consession stand and the step from underclassmen athletes to the Varsity level. i JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS: Rita Yeager — Treasurer, Rick Riley — President, Diane Fields — Vice-President, and Marianne Schaefer — Secretary. All cheerleaders promote school spirit during games and pep assemblies. Mrs. Smith, cheerleading advisor, does a fine job coaching these girls. The girls spend many nights after school practicing and the whole end product is well worth the effort. JV: J. Schneider, C. Leedy, P. Abell, J. Bixby, and R. Vellonoweth (capt). WRESTLING Below: D. Clubs 81 The two choral groups featured on these pages represent begin- nings on the road to musical knowledge and, hopefully, new members of Medina’s award-winning Con- cert Choir. The most startling things about them in the past few years has been their meteoric growth in numbers, the Boys’ Glee, in particular, having grown from ten members to over forty, and the girls’ glee from forty to over one hundred twenty-five. Meeting every other day the glee clubs prepare for a few con- certs yearly, the high point being their par- ticipation in the an- nual stage show, where the many individual talents of the musi- cians of MHS can be shown. The orchestra continued to improve this year and is now quite excellent. The musicians presented sev- eral concerts this year including a special one for elementary children this spring which was much appreciated by the young audience. Mike Marshall and Don Beck take time out to reflect upon the score. It never fails to amaze people how some peo ple are singing “oohh, ' “ahh,” and ohh and still be performing the same song. Hlnmm. Swing Choir is the newest addition to the music scene at MHS. Selected from the concert choir the group meets on Tuesday nights to rehearse its repe- toire. The group sings songs of a lighter vein and performs for local community groups, school chil- dren, and conventions. It was also an integral part of Showtime II. Its purpose is to give the more the- atrical individuals a chance to express themselves in a more relaxed situation and under more more comfortable conditions. Swing Choir K. Wiles, J. Burke, D. Pep Club pursues the art of spirit-making through locker and hall decorations for our athletes and cheering extra loud at pep as- semblies and games. Almost every night girls can be seen in ragged shorts with paint and paintbrush in hand racking their brains for some witty, new slogan. Or if one happens to be in the gym on a Thrusday afternoon, one might spy a terrified Pep Club member in the very height of the gym clinging to the rafters as she fearfully tapes up a sign. At least once every few months Pep Club members find it in their hearts to reward themselves for their many varied efforts, with a potluck supper. ROW 1: Mrs. Smith, M. Lemmer, R. Jamerson, A. Concert Choir If there was one word to describe the year for concert choir it would have to be “successful.” A wide range of styles and languages marked the repetoire and the concert schedule was exhausting but rewarding. For the second year the choir re- ceived the highest state awards in Columbus April 24. The big hit of the year was, as might be ex- pected, Showtime II which drew capacity crowds two nights in a row. Members of the choir also did well at solo and ensemble contest in Cuyahoga Falls. Both mixed ensembles received superior ratings. Superior ratings for solos went to Ray Bannon, Chris Koppelberger, and Don Beck, while excellent ratings were awarded to Patt Tucker, Greg Molner, Stan Carter, Johnn Wilder and Jim Smith. Soloists and choir rehearse for the Christmas concert. 124 Concert Choir Showtime is Smash Success What takes place each spring, is colorful, bursting with talent, and draws a bigger crowd than a basketball game? Answer . . . Showtime II. For the third year the music department pulled out all stops and really gave its audi- ence their money’s worth. This years’ extravaganza was put forth by an incredible 250 people piled all over the stage on risers, boxes, and barstools. Selections came from many of the top shows of the century. Applause was loud and long and the response from the audience resembles pandemonium. It will be tough to beat next year. Sparkling and professional choreography marked the exciting rendition of “Thoroughly Modern Millie.” A bit of melancholy hits Greg Molner as he reflects on song-lyrics. Bill Pike and Alyce Butt do their thing to tunes from “Oklahoma . The square dancers were a big hit. A Guess who’s coming to dinner? Roast beef, baked potato, and corn were the bill of fare for the annual Junior-Senior Banquet, held in the gym May 14. As usual the event was well at- tended by both classes and members of the faculty. Pre-dinner laughs were provided by a display of senior baby pictures contrasted with senior class photos. The junior class spotlighted famous and infamous senior personalities in its spoof, “Every- thing You Always Wanted to Know About the Senior Class— But Were Afraid to Ask.” Mr. Rios and company are intent upon the meal. Yum! Banquet 1 27 mm Junior-Senior Prom The royal family. Attendants Jeff Johnson and Marianne Cochran, Queen Nancy Gilliland, Junior Class President Rick Riley, and King Terry Starkey. May 15 was truly a night to remember as elegantly attired couples danced the night away at the Jun- ior-Senior Prom, held at the Summit Mall. The theme “We’ve Only Just Begun” was perfect and the decor truly regal. The music was right up-to- date but was danceable. The big moment came when Terry Starkey and Nancy Gilliland were crowned king and queen of the 1971 prom, with Jeff Johnson and Marianne Cochran the attend- ants. As one would expect, John Burke was the first to offer his congratulations to the queen. 128 Prom Jeff and Marianne have a quiet dance together. Lynda King was the first speaker, and after encountering difficul- ties with her cap, she proceeded with her address, “The Essence of You.” Graduation 1971 was held under ideal weather conditions, everything was perfect and the heat subsided enough to allow some degree of comfort. With a total of 263 graduates the class of ’71 was the largest yet and the last class under 300 students in size. It was the culmination of 12 long years of tedious learning highlighted by good experiences and good friends. At the awards assembly Mr. Rios called the Class of 1971 “the” class. He couldn ' t have been more right. These pages prove what it was all about. 134 Graduation Anxiety and memories fill these seniors moments before the end of it all. It takes hard work as well as imagination and organization. Faced with the various obstacles that confront an annu al staff regularly such as keeping track of ads and meeting deadlines, the Medinian staff en- countered the problem of breaking in a new advisor, Mr. Cheuvront, when Mr. Insprucker left in January. With all these problems con- fronting the production of the 1971 Medinian, pictures were taken, deadlines were met and another year of memories has been recorded for the students of MHS. It was a welcome relief from regular class to see the rubber-faced mimists go through their routines, most of which were, na- turally, comical. The true test of their tal- ent came when the classes asked the mimists to perform mimes of the audi- ences’ own design. K. Hathaway, L. Chidsey, T. Farren, J. Matthews, J. Dooley, G. Karson, J. Many things have changed at MHS such as: a larger Freshmen class, the new dress code, new teachers, and the retiring of two teachers, Mr. John Insprucker, and Mr. Howard Dai- ley, and also one of the secretaries, Mrs. Marjorie Poetsch. I would like to thank all the members of the yearbook staff for their help. I would especially like to thank Mr. Ed Mc- Nabb, our Paragon Representative, Virginia Wilde, and our advisors, who were always there when we needed them. Without their help this yearbook would not have been possi- ble.
