The English Department re- ceived a lift this year from the pur- chase of new composition books for freshmen and sophomores and new literature books for juniors and seniors. Variety, an important part of an English course, was repre- sented by both faculty and curricu- lum. Left: Carol Poor adds a few last minute notes to her report as Mrs. Heiges opens her grade- book. 17

Mr. Shamp, the Beau Brummel of MHS, and Glenn Rozell seem to be looking at a very interesting magazine. See Mr. Elrick. See Mr. Elrick laugh. He is thinking about the test he is about to give his senior English students. Funny Mr. Elrick! The annual Book Fair draws everyone’s interest by offering a great variety of books at low prices. 16

Mathematics Department Mr. Brewer, Mr. Paidas, Mr. Insprucker, Mrs. Whitman, Miss Cross, Mr. Minick, and Mr. Haas. Courses in mathematics at MHS range from the practical to the abstract. The non-college-bound student can take general math, which teaches him practical usage of num- bers at home or in busi- ness. Courses for college- bound students include al- gebra and geometry, after which honors students can continue with pre-calculus and calculus. Two innovations in the math department were in- troduced this year. One was an ungraded math course, a practical course in which students can progress at their own speed. The other was com- puter training for academ- ic credit. Mrs. Whitman points out a problem to a geometry class. 18
