We all know how true this can be. Yet there are so many things to be accomplished dur- ing a year of high school. They may be individual accomplishments or they may require a group ef- fort. They may be very special and important, or they may be just everyday tasks. But someone finds the time to make each effort, because there is a time for every purpose. This book is a tribute to all those who have given their time for the purpose of making 1970 a year of success at Medina High School. 2 A time to break down, A time to build up, A time to kill, A time to heal, A time to embrace, A time to refrain from embracing. 3 4 A time for war, A time for peace, A time to mourn, A time to dance. 5 A time to weep, A time to laugh, A time to mend, A time to sew. 6 7 A time to seek, A time to lose: To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven. 8 — Faculty and Academics Administration Is Enlarged This year’s administra- tion has been expanded in order that administrative duties may be spread more widely and carried out more efficiently. The ad- dition of a Dean of Stu- dents and a teacher in charge of attendance has enlarged the staff and al- lowed the principal, espe- cially, to give more atten- tion to his primary tasks. BOARD OF EDUCATION: Seated: Robert A. Hedrick, Ralph Waite, and Miss F. C. Veverka. Standing: Calvin Wible, Leonard Morse, Robert Smith, and E. W. P. Smith. As of January 1, Hank Jaeger will replace Miss Vaver- ka on the school board. ROBERT A. HEDRICK AUGIE RIOS ROBERT W. DAGUE Superintendent Principal Assistant Principal 12 ROBERT P. Did you wonder how the halls could be such a mess at the end of a school day, yet be bright and clean the next morn- ing? These, and oth- ers, are things many students take for granted, because our staff of secretaries, cooks, maintenance people, and others do such an excellent job. The attendance su- pervisor and the ath- letic director, actually part of the adminis- tration, also aid in the smooth operation of the school. MHS SECRETARIES: MRS. BOYER MRS. TAYLOR MRS. See Mr. Elrick. See Mr. Elrick laugh. He is thinking about the test he is about to give his senior English students. Funny Mr. Elrick! The annual Book Fair draws everyone’s interest by offering a great variety of books at low prices. 16 English Department j Row 1: Mr. Bosler, Mr. Elrick, Mr. Shamp, and Mr. Holden. Row 2: Mrs. Elrick, Miss Kitska, Mrs. Anderson, Mrs. Stahnke, Mrs. Holden, Mrs. Neptune, and Mrs. Heiges. The English Department re- ceived a lift this year from the pur- chase of new composition books for freshmen and sophomores and new literature books for juniors and seniors. Variety, an important part of an English course, was repre- sented by both faculty and curricu- lum. Left: Carol Poor adds a few last minute notes to her report as Mrs. Heiges opens her grade- book. 17 Mathematics Department Mr. Brewer, Mr. Paidas, Mr. Insprucker, Mrs. Whitman, Miss Cross, Mr. Minick, and Mr. Haas. Courses in mathematics at MHS range from the practical to the abstract. The non-college-bound student can take general math, which teaches him practical usage of num- bers at home or in busi- ness. Courses for college- bound students include al- gebra and geometry, after which honors students can continue with pre-calculus and calculus. Two innovations in the math department were in- troduced this year. One was an ungraded math course, a practical course in which students can progress at their own speed. The other was com- puter training for academ- ic credit. Mrs. Whitman points out a problem to a geometry class. 18 Upper above: Only Miss Cross can become animated while explaining a cal- culus problem. Lower above: Mr. Minick takes ten” from grading tests. Right: Mr. Brewer and his trusty overhead projector give the eye to an unru- ly student. 19 Above: Miss Huddle gives a warning glance to our sneaky rov- ing photographer. Above right: Mr. George says, You mean all you wanted was to take my picture?” Right: Come now, Mr. Weygandt, what’s funny about a per- son’s health? 20 Social Studies Department Row 1: Mrs. Demuth and Miss Huddle. Row 2: Mr. George, Mr. Dailey, Mr. P.larski, and Mr. Butler. Absent when picture was taken: Mr. Wey- gandt. Courses in the social studies department are de- signed to prepare the stu- dent for useful living beyond high school. American history, world history, civics, and eco- nomics teach him to be a knowledgeable American and world citizen through understanding of the past, present, and future of the system under which he lives. Psychology, sociolo- gy, and health teach him to understand and appre- ciate himself and others. All eyes are on Mrs. Demuth as she leads a class discussion in American history. 21 The curriculum in the science depart- ment is chosen to give the student a wide sampling of many scientific disciplines. In ninth grade, every student is required to take physical science, a basic survey course. In succeeding grades, he can elect to take biology, chemistry, and physics. Each of these courses gives basic information and includes experimental work in the laborato- ry. BSCS and Chem Study are also offered for the above-average science student. Right: Mr. Swinglish oversees an experiment being car- ried out in freshman science by Scott Harpster and George Downey. Below: We know that Mr. Graham is occasionally absent-minded, but why is he pointing to a blank screen? Maybe he sees something we don’t! 22 Science Department Biology teacher Mr. Walker looks on as Paul Baisden completes a chart. Now you divide this by that, multiply, then add x degrees. Simple . . .You mean you don’t understand?” says Mr. Alexander. ! 1 1 t i L . . i [. _ 1 Mr. Graham, Mr. Ware, Mr. Walker, Mr. Robson, Mr. Alexander, Mr. Swinglish. Language Department Mrs. Zimmerman, Mr. Baker, Miss Grund, Mr. Millor, Miss Kitska, and Mr. Evans. Absent when picture was taken: Mrs. Kellogg. In our time of ever-improving trans- portation and com- munication, it is be- coming in creasingly essential to have at least a working knowledge of a sec- ond language. Many students realize this and elect to study a language. At Medina the student has a choice of Latin, French, German, or Spanish. Latin is of- fered for two years, French and German for four each, and Spanish for five, in- cluding an advanced placement course. Mrs. Kellogg corrects sentences which her Latin students Mr. Millor’s Spanish class listens attentively (?) have written on the board. as he explains a sentence. Industrial Arts Department The industrial arts department is one of the most diversified in the school. It offers a variety of courses ranging from the basic to the very technical. Print- ing, drawing, electricity, wood, and - metals — courses in all these media are offered to the mechanically-minded person. Upper left: Mr. Barbor helps a student in shop class. Left: Teri Powell, the only female welder in MHS, and possibly the county, works on a project. Above: Mr. Celidonio works at the printing ma- chine. The newest program is OWE (Occupational Work Experience) which joins the al- ready established programs of DE, DCT, COE, and Work Study. These programs benefit the student who does not plan to attend college bv giving him salable skills to offer the business or in- dustrial world after graduation. Closelv connected with the vocation- al department is the business depart- ment. COE was joined this year bv BOE (Business Office Education), an intensive business program for juniors. Other general business courses are of- fered. Left: Mrs. Schafer watches Janet Kincaid’s prog- ress in typing class. Vocational and Business Department Mr. O’Connor gives A1 Gager a pointer as Paul Abromaska and Tom DeGenero look on. 27 The Fine Arts Department at MHS includes manv areas. Devel- opment of mind, bodv, and spirit are equally important, so fine arts includes art, music, physical education, and humanities cours- es. In the field of art, courses offered are crafts, painting, and gen- eral art. Band, choir, and music appreciation satisfy the music lover, while humanities offers a sampling of all of these. Gvm courses are phvs ed and gymnastics. Above: Jim Yeager looks like he’s smashing something, but actually he’s making a copper dish in crafts class. Above right: Our own Lawrence Welk swings the choir into another number with, A one . . . a two ... a three.” (It’s really Mr. Carey.) Right: Medina’s special education class con- stitutes a department in itself. Teachers Mrs. Starr and Mrs. Streett do a fine job helping students in this class to learn at their own speed and to achieve their greatest possible potential. 28 Fine Arts Department Far left: Mr. Limpert, Bov ' s Physical Education. Seniors — that magic word. It makes us the leaders of the school, that privileged group whose position we envied for three years. It brings an increased class unity; we know we may never see some of our class- mates again, so we must get to know them while we have the opportunity. It brings a feeling of individual pride too: a pride in having grown in four years from a giggling Freshman to a poised, confident Senior. The word Senior also brings mixed emotions: anticipation of the future and nostalgia for the past. Each Senior has his own memories of high school and some memories are shared by many. Like the locker room after a game . . . Pep Club painting signs . . . building a float until 1:30 a. m. . . . Homecoming victories . . . trying to translate Middle English . . . Powder Puff football in a sea of mud . . . leaving school early to go to work . . . Mr. Dailey’s Army stories and Mr. Butler’s no-no’s” . . . With these memories and many more in mind, we will go out the doors of MHS, as Seniors, for the last time. 32 Paul Arthur Abramoska Cathy Jo Acker Richard Eugene Allain George Frazer Anderson Victoria Rose Andrews Ray Edward Anklam Nancy Rae Aten Kenneth Lewis Aukerman James Robert Bailey Shannon Sue Bailey Paul Baisden Jr. Walter Baker Jr. 33 Anthony A. Wallace; Secretary, M. Roshon; Vice- President, H. Kahn; and President, J. Burke. Junior year marks the beginning of the end” of a high school career, as the student gains upper- class status and begins his final two years. Junior year means full participation in school activities, as the class enters into float competition and takes responsibility for the prom, and as junior athletes be- come varsity players. As juniors, the Class of ’71 found itself in a position of true leadership for the first time, and they have carried out their responsibilities well. A soph is in between the newness of a freshman and the ' ' estab- lished” feeling of an upperclass- man. A soph is in between the young, carefree feeling and the look-ahead worries. Most of all, a soph is in between the position of being led and being a leader. Nonetheless, our sophomores have gotten into the swing of things in their second year. Everything seems bigger than at the junior high: the halls are wider, the rooms are bigger, the seniors are taller, and the textbooks are fatter. Yet each freshman feels that he too has grown somehow by taking that step to a larger school; and that by par- ticipating in the life of that school, he will continue to grow. Medina’s Class of 1974 has demonstrated that participation and growth during 1970. FRESHMAN CLASS OFFICERS: President, D. Rowlands; Vice-President, B. Austin; Secretary, G. Gardner; and Treasurer, D. Only Inches Away From Everything. 1969 was a triumphant season for the Bat- tling Bees football team, which established the best won-lost record since 1966 and only the second winning season since 1962. This season saw the Bees finish second in the SWC race, los- ing the title to Bay Village by the now infamous six-inches. The key to the season, according to head coach Roger Auker, was total dedication.” Coach Auker and his enlarged staff instituted a summer conditioning program, and starting then and working throughout the season, they attempted to instill in the boys a sense of team pride and a winning attitude. The season record is adequate proof that they succeeded, and in the course of establishing this record, the Bees pro- vided many thrilling moments for their fans. Th is sense of total dedication” also extended to the student body. The 69 season saw Medi- na’s school spirit grow to an all-time high, as the students supported the team verbally and by their attendance at the games. The Bees captured five dual meet victories, finished tenth in the Malone College Sectional, second in the Southwestern conference meet, third in the Akron District, and ninth in the Northeastern Ohio Regional. Two individuals brought recognition to Medina. John Gulledge again proved that he was one of the top distance runners in Ohio as he was un- beaten in dual meet competition, placed second in the Malone College Invi- tational, captured first place in the Akron district, second place in the Northeastern Ohio regional, first place in the annual Southwestern Confer- ence Meet, and fifth place in the state individual race. Joe Hurd, a fine sophomore runner, also brought area and state recogni- tion to Beeland. Joe came on verv strong near the end of the season. He fin- ished third in the Southwestern Conference Meet, and twentv-first in the state individual meet. The 1969-70 Battling Bee hardwood aggregation opened their season by blasting Brunswick. Two SWC vic- tories were followed bv a loss to Bay Village, after which the Bees rebounded to defeat Avon Lake. A loss to county rival Wadsworth was followed by seven straight victories, including wins over Fairview and Brooklvn. The Bees’ title hopes were dimmed after another fruitless encounter with Bay’s Rockets, but brightened after Fairview downed Bav, creating a threeway tie. Under mounting pressure, the Bees contracted winning fever. They rattled off four final victories, including a 101-56 count over North Olmsted and a 62-49 Valentine’s Day victory over Fair- view, to share the SWC championship with Bay. Sectional tournament play saw the Bees avenge the ear- lier defeat by Wadsworth, down Wooster, and devour the Triway Titans (Purple People) for the championship. The Bees ended the season 18-4 as they were defeated by Massillon in district play. New staff personnel, including Mr. Ware as varsity coach and Mr. Houghtaling as JV coach, was one change. The new wrestling program was further enhanced by the purchase of new uniforms for the varsity grapplers and by the innovation of wrestling cheer- leaders. These attempts to upgrade Medina’s wrestling program ap- peared to be effective, as the grapplers turned in consistently good performances and attendance at matches soared. Much of the weight of Medina’s dual meet success was carried by SWC tournament champs Doug Simmers, who was 24-0 in dual meets, and Don Todd; but many more wrestlers had win- ning season records. All these efforts contributed to Medina’s second place finish in the Southwestern Conference, a marked improvement over the previous season. II 9 Female Athletes Participate in GAA The Girl’s Athletic Association, one of the largest clubs at Medina, provides an opportunity for interested girls to participate in active sports. Intramural sports or- ganized by GAA include volleyball, basketball, and soft- ball, and this year an interscholastic basketball team was also formed. GAA members also engaged in other projects in 1969-70. One of the biggest was painting the lines on the gridiron and decorating the stadium and goalposts during football season. Some members also volunteered to serve at the Fall Athletic Banquet. Other activities included freshman initiation, pot luck dinners, and play days. Making lavouts, taking pictures, writing copy: these are just a few of the tasks that must be done. Since not all staffers could be scheduled for the regular yearbook period, some had to work on their own time, but confusion was kept to a minimum. The staff decided at the beginning of the year to produce a better year- book, and we feel the result has been worth the effort. Ji€§ STAFF MEMBERS (not in order above): C. Biliczky (Editor), J. The club redecorated the art room by painting one of its walls with expressionistic designs. They also demonstrated their abilities to the community by painting the windows of the Red Barn with seasonal murals. Ghosts and witches haunted the building at Halloween, while snowmen and Santa added Christmas cheer to the neighborhood in December. Another group project was the construction of a float for the Homecoming parade. Rifle Club Competes Nationally OFFICERS: Top: John Burke and Rob Schmitzer. Bottom: Mark Jameyson and Mike Grieve. This year the Rifle Club, only in its second year at MHS, took part in national competitions. Each month a team of ten crackshots was selected from the club’s membership, and these marksmen participated in monthly government- sponsored matches bv shooting at the local target range and sending in the results. In this way the local sharpshooters competed with 700 other high schools nationwide, consistent- ly amassing high scores. Weekly meetings, including target practice, gave each club member the opportunity to improve his skill and have a chance to be on the team. Kneeling: J. Burke. P. Baird. M. Grieve, M. Jamev- son. E. Each girl became acquainted with one more member of the older generation when the girls ’adopted’’ residents of the County Home, giving them gifts or cards on holidays. On the other side of the gap, GLC entertain- ed young students at the Weymouth Training Center with an Easter play, ’’The Bunnyland Brigade,” with Marcia Sirrine in the lead role. The club skied at Brandywine nearly every Wednesday. The highlight of the year was a weekend ski trip to New York. Super skier Marcia Riegger smiles for our camera before taking off. Though the club’s membership was small, it was active all year in service, profit-making, and fun projects. Service projects included the annu- al basketball coatcheck and deco- rating a Christmas tree for the hos- pital, while for fun the Y-Teens had slumber and make-up parties. These projects were financed by bake sales and a car wash. Y-TEENS - Top: C. Mann, L. Kubal, P. Mohr, E. Monaco, K. Hedrick, L. Plants, and B. Selzer. Bottom: J. Denson, S. Biggs, N. Mann, B. Nonetheless, this was enough to insure a happy Homecom- ing weekend, which was begun Thursday evening by a bonfire pep rally and cli- maxed by the Saturday night dance. The only incident to mar the weekend was the sudden illness of attendant Amy Gunner, which prevented her attendance at the festivi- ties. Twelve Years of Work and Fun Come to an End as Members of the Class of 1970 Receive Their Diplomas The successful abolishment of senior exams set the mood for a happy and relieved last week of classes for seniors. Wednesday, May 27, was their final day, and senior fun week began with a bang the following day as the class took off to Cedar Point for its annu- al trip. Everyone returned tired but happy at the end of the day, only to have to get up early the next day for Bacca- laureate rehearsal. Baccalaureate was reinstat- ed this year, but attendance was made optional. It was held on May 31, 1970. Father James Patton was the major speaker, with an address en- titled The Existential Me. The following week saw seniors cleaning up the stadi- um on Tuesday, then gather- ing for Commencement re- hearsal and the senior honors assembly on Wednesday. Although rain threatened, it never ma- terialized, and the ceremony was held in the sta- dium, which was decorated with potted flowers and trees and a canopied speakers’ platform. After hearing two student speakers and a choral presentation, the Class of 1970 was presented by Mr. Rios to Mr. Calvin Wible, school board pres- ident. Mr. Wible then presented the diplomas, and after singing the Alma Mater, the class re- cessed to the tune of Pomp and Circumstance.
