It is not always easy to remember everything that happened after the excitement has worn off. The names and faces of many friends and teachers are soon forgotten, along with the memories of favorite classes, exciting football and basketball games, and those boring study halls. During the year, time seemed to drag, but looking back, it seems to have passed all too quickly. It is our hope that this book will preserve the many memories that might have been lost - memories of your days at MHS. English and Language Departments Greatly Gayla Calvert tries to translate some French for her classmates but she’s having a rough time! ► , . 1 i Roger Martin breathes a sigh of relief and returns to his seat after giving an English report. Brian Beck and Paul Sevougian try to look like they ' re paying attention in Miss Muren’s German class. mmmmrn zmm • Above: Mark Feldman says, What is that hand doing on my shoulder? Wait ’til he finds out what lands on his head! Left: Are Mr. Holden and the AP English class listening to Bill Cosby records again Improved With the Use of Modern Equipment Barry Muha declares his heated passion for Karla Jakubec. Shouldn’t someone tell Mr. Bosler that these scenes should be private? Medina’s English and language departments have grown and improved in the past year. Excellent courses in Spanish, Latin, German, and French are available to students. Ad- vanced Placement Spanish is also available to seniors. Audio-visual aids and the language lab enable students to further their understanding of the language and the country. The English department also offers a variety of courses, including AP English, Business Communications - both for seniors, Speech I and II, and American Heritage which combines English III and American history for juniors. Freshman classes concentrate mostly on grammar, while the upper classes explore the world of literature. A highlight of the year was the showing of five great, all-time movies. Mathematics and Science Left: Really, Bill! What’s so funny about that calculus problem? Above: Joe Cendro is so excited about the prospect of doing his math, we can just see the en- thusiasm glowing in his eyes. Judging from all the apparatus on the table, Nan Shurance and Sharon Brugmann Mr. Brewer just puts in the formula, turns the crank, and out must be doing the most complicated experiment in the physics book. comes the answer! 8 Hold the Key to the Future Below: Marianne Cochran says, Oh, Sue, look at all the pretty colors!” in biology class. Above: Mark, you’ll never learn geometry if you don’t pay atten- tion when Mrs. Whitman is trying to help you! Below: Mike Groetz and Kurt Friday are finding out just what makes that creature work. Two departments providing courses that give the student useful, factual knowledge are the mathe- matics and science departments. In the math department, courses range from the strictly practical to the abstract. On the practical side, there are courses such as general math, which give the vocationally- oriented student a working mathe- matical knowledge. On the other end are courses such as calculus and slide rule, for the college-bound student. Much of science is based on mathematical properties. Therefore, some math courses are co-ordinated with science courses by grade. From ninth grade physical science through senior physics, with biolo- gy and chemistry between, the stu- dent gains a well-rounded scientific knowledge. 9 Above: Chuck Demczyk works in Shop class. Below: Members of the Home Ec classes model for the Simplicity Style Show. Below: DCT student Peggy Dreibelbis finds a book related to her voca- tional training course. Above: Rick Cornelius and Mike Cavey work out a problem in mechanical drawing. 10 COE girls Bea Dunbar, Barb Gorey, and Sharon Fiser learn to use business machines in the classroom portion of their course. Vocational and Business Departments Grow Mr. Celidonio gives Rob Nichols some assistance. A department which has been receiving increased atten- tion recently at MHS is the vocational department. This department has been growing steadily with the addition of new cooperative programs yearly. In addition to on-the-job programs, many shop courses and home economics courses are offered. The business department, a subgroup of the vocational department, prepares many students for secretarial work, and has an on-the-job program of its own, with more to be instituted in the future. Are Don Bryenton and Marv Grieve smiling about their typing ability or the fun they’re having in class I I Right: Sue Pursley and Jody Hardinger check the paper to see how much money they’re earning in the stock market. Buying and selling stock was just part of the experience seniors gained in Economics class. Their year-end profit was donated to Dollars for Scholars. Above: A shy lass, Barb Hill, tries to avoid the camera while working on a project in Art class. Left: Ken Canheld seems rather uninterested in the experiment Mr. Pilarski is doing. Or is he afraid of the poor little white mouse: Art and Social Studies Departments Offer Variety The Social Studies Department of Medina has become larger and better. Besides Civics and Economics, which are senior require- ments and American History, which is a jun- ior requirement, World History, Psychology, and Sociology are also offered to students. The Art and Music Departments are equal- ly important. Students have the choice of band, choir, and orchestra, as well as Music Theory. In the Art Department, Art, Crafts, and Art History and Appreciation are offered. Beginning this year, only freshmen and so- phomores are required to participate in physi- cal education, although it is also open to up- perclassmen. Miss Lawrence and Gym Leader Sue Lipstreu help freshman gym students leap over that Crazy Horse. Miss Huddle shows Bob Ward how the boot kicks the football. Much more fun than World History! Two members of the Medina chapter of FMA (Future Mil- lionaires of America) peruse their favorite periodical. STAFF ADMINISTRATION 14 School Policies Set by School Robert A. The Bees lost to the Colts, but the next week they were vic- torious. For the first time in history, Medina played Brunswick’s Blue Devils, winning by a score of 40-14. The opening Southwestern Conference game for the Bees was lost to Westlake. De- feats at the hands of Bay Village and Avon Lake followed. The next game against Olm- sted Falls was Homecoming, and the Bees were to meet the Bulldgos before their Queen. The Bees showed their streak of champion- ship as they beat Olmsted 8-0. This was also outstanding because it was the first time in six years that Medina had won a Homecoming game. Just as things were looking up for the Bees, they met a team from Fairview and the Bees lost this one. The next games were against North Olmsted and Wadsworth as the Bees held their heads up high and lost to both, fighting till the end of the game. It was still an impressive football season, despite quite a few letdowns that might have made a diffence; However, our team again proved its right to the title The Medina Battling Bees:” 77 Medina Battling Bees Defeat Olmsted Falls Stan McLain arrives to help Rick Williams pull down a Cloverleaf back. Larry Collins seems to be undecided as to which way he should run. Terry Scherz hustles downfield for a block as Ken McEwen follows him with a tackier hanging on. Mark Hunter turns on the speed as he easily outruns his fol- lowing tacklers. Tim Caverly provides interference for Scott Febus as they try to turn the corner. 78 for First Homecoming Victory in Six Years Ken McEwen runs into two tough tacklers as Glenn Olds and Larry Collins turn to see if their fake worked. Arvid Nord watches Larry Collins get tackled as he gets to a block just a little too late. Olds is ready to throw the bomb as he waits to see an open re- ceiver downfield. 79 Jayvee and Freshman Football Back Varsity Junior Varsity football team - Row 1: J. Cendro, G. Earl, R. Coleman, C. With the 1969 Medina baseball team out of tourna- ment play, but only after winning the sectional and then losing a tough game to St. Joseph ' s, 2-0, which put Medina in the district runner-up position, the Bees concentrated on winning the conference. With a sec- ond loss to Bay Village, the Bees’ conference title hopes were destroyed. However, these players compiled the most impressive season record of any Medina Baseball team with 12 wins and 6 losses. They also gave Medina its first SWC winning season with an 8 win-6 loss rec- ord. A Junior Varsity baseball team was introduced into Medina this year. These underclassmen baseballers gave a glimpse of a bright future for Medina’s high school baseball. 1968-69 BASKETBALL SCORES Varsity Junior Varsity Medina Opponent Medina Opponent 11 Cloverleaf 7 4 Avon Lake 7 3 4 0 Rocky River 7 4 3 5 Fairview 3 6 3 5 Fairview 3 4 10 6 North Olmsted 0 8 Berea 3 6 3 5 Bay Village 6 0 5 5 Avon Lake 6 0 4 5 Rocky River 3 13 4 4 Fairview 3 0 St. Joseph’s 2 4 North Olmsted 3 9 11 2 Westlake 5 8 4 5 Olmsted Falls 3 5 1 8 Olmsted Falls 0 4 Westlake 1 0 Bay Village 3 1 9 Highland 7 9 Bee Thinclads Bring First SWC Championship i + I r j ■: j J n The 1969 South-Western Conference Champs — Row 1: R. Then there was Card Section, whose members practiced long hours to learn new cheers. Their green derbies and vests added a bright touch to all home games. The club promotes athletic ability among its members, through such events as basketball games, baseball games, volleyball, Play Days, and potlucks. The large club gains membership each year as more and more freshmen suffer the tort- ures of initiation, under the sadistic eye of seasoned seniors. But they lived through it - just barely. The credit is mainly due to Dennis Sepper - President, Mimi Brown - Vice-President, Mark Bixler - Trea- surer, and Chris Chandler - Secretary. These four officers worked well together to do what had to be done; they organ- ized Homecoming (bonfire, pre-game events, and dance), Sadie Hawkins Dance, and rewrote the entire Student Council constitution. III Drama Club Presents Quality Productions Drama Club, advised by Mr. Stan Bosler, was more ambitious than ever this year. Two full-length plays were produced in the fall and spring for presentation to the community. These were The Glass Menagerie and Thurber Carnival. Other public presentations included a children’s play and several student-written one-acts. One play, The Lottery, was presented in a student assembly. Membership and participation in Drama Club were increased this year under officers Vicki Andrews - President, Roxie Haas — Vice-President, Cindy Been - Secretary, and Nancy Been — Treasurer. The highlight of Drama Club activity came on May 2 and 3, when the spring play, Thurber Carnival, was produced. This was actually a series of several small plays by James Thurber. Major roles in this play were fairly evenly distributed throughout the cast; there were no actual major roles. Some of the people in this play included John Harvey, Linda Wag- ner, Brian Beck, Donna Scott, Dave Flugum, Mike Donovon, and Sue Cowden. Right: Silence! A Drama Club meet- ing is in progress. Each member of the 1969 Medinian staff has his own particular memories of working on the yearbook. The sports edi- tors remember trying to locate the sports pictures. The class editors remember countless layouts and endless retyping. The business and advertising managers remember trying to keep the bills straight. These are just a few of the things that must be done to produce a yearbook. Despite all these problems (and MORE), the yearbook was assembled and deadlines were met due to the organiza- tional efforts and plain hard work of Editor Bonnie Dreibelbis and the rest of the staff. To be admitted to the club, a girl had to have maintained grades of a B-average, and have no grade below a C- in a major subject. A girl had to be a junior or a senior. She was admitted to the club after the voting of the other GLC members. GLC promoted many worthwhile projects for the school and community. The group adopted” old people from the county home, and visited and sent them small gifts. Members again sold tickets at basketball games and football games. The major fund- raising project was the sale of sweatshirts, T-shirts, jackets, and nightshirts. The traveling basket” continually circulated through the club, as the girls exchanged gifts in alphabetical order. Every girl had a basketball brother and a secret pal. Membership in this club is limited to juniors and seniors, but any upperclassman interested in contemporary affairs was welcome to join. Activities for the year included meetings and speake rs. One speaker was a professor from Jordan, who spoke on the Middle East. Another was Father Dennis Tomczyk from St. Frandis Xavier, speaking on changes in the Church. In one meeting, CAA members watched the TV bulletins of the presidential election. In another meeting, the pros and cons of gun control were discussed. CAA proved highly enjoyable and educational this year under Craig Van Horsten - President, Tim Myers — Vice- President, Karen Schlechty - Secretary, and Rob Wilder - Treasurer. 124 Below: Father Tomczyk answers questions from CAA members. Diversified Cooperative Training or DCT, is the branch of Medina’s vocational educational program designed to produce skilled workers. The twenty-five members of this class all spent half of their school day on the job. After gradu- ation, most found that they had jobs waiting for them. Part of the curriculum of DCT includes membership in VICA, Vocational Industrial Clubs of America. In November, VICA mem- bers attended a state convention, where Medina Chapter President Dave Hanshue ran a close second in his bid to be elected as state president. DECA, or Distributive Education Clubs of America, is an integral part of the class- room work in the Distributive Education program. Every DE student is in DECA, and as a result of this unity, DECA is one of the most active and productive clubs in the school. The prime purpose of the club is to bring about a thorough knowledge of the free en- terprise system. This is accomplished through classwork and on-the-job training. DECA also carries out other activities. This year they sponsored dances, car washes, and bake sales. They also attended various regional and state conventions and ended the year with the annual Employer-Employee Banquet. DECA officers this year were Bill Rose - President, Craig Clasen - Vice-President, Dave Roberts — Treasurer, Helen Dunn — Secretary, and Pat Jennings — Chaplain. 130 to Enter the World of Sales and Service THE WINNERS: M. This group was COE, or Cooper- ative Office Education. These students, already proficient in business skills, spent a half of their school day on the job as secretaries or other related positions. Since COE was a new club, its extracurricular activities were slightly limited for financial reasons. However, the group gathered food and other articles for a needy family at Christmas, and, like other vocational clubs, held an employer-employee spring banquet. In addition, several COE girls won various awards at COE contests. Row 1: M. Hausman, K. McChaskie, A. Krosse, S. Fiser, and D. Taylor. Row 2: Mr. Webb - Adviser, B. Gorey, G. Smith, B. Dunbar, D. A new vocational club at Medina this year was the Work-Study Club. Its purpose, as stated by adviser Mr. Fenn, is as follows: To develop an awareness and understanding of the job and social skills needed for suc- cessful employment and good citizenship.” There are several phases of study included in this program. It is open to students of sophomore standing and higher. All students enrolled in the program studied for half a day at school, and spent the last half of the day on the job. Students worked as cafeteria help or office help, while older students worked outside the school in an actual job situation. One of the most ambitious extracurricular activities of the group was the sale of hot chocolate and doughnuts in the mornings before school, much appreciated on those cold winter mornings. Other activi- ties included bake sales, a car wash, and sponsorship of a Teen Canteen held in March. Phil Greene served as President of Work-Study. The other three officers were Kathy Simmons — Vice President, Theresa Bayless - Secretary, and Gary Presock - Treasurer. 134 Below: Mr. Fenn presents the following awards to outstanding Work-Study students: Wesley White - Outstanding Worker em- ployed outside the school, Bill Yoder — Outstanding Worker within the school, and Phil Green — Work-Study Club President. This business was as thriving as usual this year, and the girls were always kept busy hanging up coats. Other activities of this year’s Y-Teens included a slumber party, bake sale, and a weekend trip to Washington D. C. Y-Teens Run Basketball Coat Check Row 1: B. Kenzig, N. Mann, C. Eakcn, J. Future Business Leaders of America 1968-1969 was Future Business Leaders of America’s first year at Medina High, but it was a rewarding one. The pur- pose of the club was to make better business leaders out of the members of the organization. Qualifications for member- ship in the club were lax, in order to promote participation in the club: one had to pay $1.50 dues, and attend meetings. Club members attended a convention in Cincinnati in March. The club sponsored a teen canteen and a car wash to help raise money. This year’s FBLA officers were Mary Leister - President, Stephanie Hobb - Vice-President, Debbie Mack - Secretary, and Cheryl Gallucci and Candy Davis — Publicity. Every Wednesday that there was good skiing weather, the club piled into a bus and made the trip to the Bran- dywine ski slopes. In addition to these regular trips, pre-paid skiers were entitled to extra free trips. One skier, Eve Krosse, was a candidate for Snow Queen at a Brandy- wine dance. Ski Club officers this year were Marcia Suddleson - President, Jane Guiltinan - Vice-President, Anne Guiltinan - Secretary, and Portia El- liott - Treasurer. Future Homemakers of America Judging by its long list of activities this year, FHA was one of the most active clubs at MHS. Its service projects included leaf raking, visiting those in the coun- ty home, and making favors for hospitalized children. Constructive projects in- cluded bake sales, candy sales, and a paper drive. FHA social events included potluck suppers and a slumber party. In addition to these events, FHA members were always learning new home- making techniques as a part of their regular activities. FHA officers were Cindy Rooy - President, Barb Rooy — Vice-President, Debbie Fetzer — Treasurer, Denise Morton - Secretary, and Linda Gasper - Historian. Advisers were Miss Hornberger and Mrs. McMullen. Right: The FHA emblem. 142 Our Sharpshooters: Rifle Club 1968-1969 was Rifle Club’s first year at MHS. Homecoming 1968 was based on the theme Honey is the Nec- tar of the Gods. The theme was reflected in both floats; the senior float resembled a Greek temple, and the junior float was a Viking ship. The seniors won the competition for their second first-place in as many tries. The weekend was a success from Thursday s parade to Friday s victory and the Saturday evening dance. 147 Top Right: Prom King and Queen, Rick Williams and Jane Pennington, reign over the Tahitian Twilight. The Prom was held at Chippewa Lake Ballroom, which was decorated in the style of a huge Tahitian garden. Pr om King and Queen, Rick Williams and Jane Pennington were crowned at 10:00 and reigned over the remaining activities. After the dance, Montrose was open to all juniors and seniors. After-Prom activities in- cluded a movie, putt-putt golf, swimming, and tennis. Looking back, it was a great year. Many things re- mained the same, while others were greatly changed. For the first time, there were only seven peri- ods and lunch, rather than the usual nine periods. Lunch times were shortened in order to provide enough time and space for the more than 1100 students at MHS. School started and dismissed much earlier, allowing students more free time for after-school activities and jobs. As happens every year, many favorite teachers and students were no longer here, but new teach- ers were welcomed along with several new students, including a freshman class of more than 300. More vocational courses were offered, as well as courses for the college-bound student. Several new organizations came into being and the Student Council drew up a new constitution for the student body. Sports events were as exciting as ever, with Medina capturing the Southwestern Conference titles in varsity track and jayvee basketball. Medina sent three athletes to State and they represented their school well. The traditional Homecoming and Prom activities were greatly enjoyed, and for the first time, a highly successful slave auction was held for charity. The year also had its somber note as a special assembly was held in memory of the late Dwight D. Eisenhower. Graduation, the final event of the year, was held outside at the stadium. For many, it was a happy occasion, but for others it was rather sad. Many friends will never again be seen and many happy memories will soon be forgotten. The Editor would like to thank the yearbook staff, Mr. Webb, Sylvart Studios, Jeff Borden, the Medina County Gazette, and all others who helped make this book possible.
