' 2 1 FOREWORD Medina Senior High School offers its sudents unlimited opportunities in order that they may grow in many ways during their four years here. There are opportunities for self-expression through music, drama, and art; intellectual stimulation by way of research for advanced courses; learning by teaching others in the tu- torial program; or, acquiring marketable skills through the vocational programs. MHS also provides unlimited opportunities for appreciation of the simple things such as hearing a sparkling laugh, a whisper in study hall, a squeal in biology, or a melodious chord from the music wing; seeing a freshman on his first day, tears as the scoreboard declares de- feat, a couple holding hands, a coach s side- lines frustrations, or, seniors making that last trek down the halls; doing homework on time, building a float, decorating for the prom, typ- ing a friend ' s term paper; or, just being a part of the school by standing in clustered groups, cheering at ball games, dancing at canteens, canvassing for scholarship funds, or carting in canned food for the annual Christmas canned food drive. Yes, there are opportunities— for those who wish to seize theme— opportunities that will prepare the student to enter the adult world at graduation time. In this volume, the MEDINIAN staff pre- sents for you a closer look at these Opportuni- ties Unlimited. 3 OPPORTUNITIES FOR- taking field trips eating lunch with congenial friends cheering teams to victory waiting for the evening bus goofing off in study hall 4 CONTENTS Academics Administration and Staff . . pninr ; . . . 8 . . 18 . 34 Underclassmen . 54 Athletics . 74 Musical Groups 102 Special Events no Organizations 116 Awards and Graduation . . 146 Advertising . 157 Index 188 B 6 MM OPPORTUNITIES FOR- exhibiting pride in school awards trodding the crowded stairs extolling Bees are Best competing in class events meeting personalities displaying fads and fashions 7 Modern teaching equipment has changed the face of the language classrooms. 8 Languages, as everyone knows, play a major role in achieving better communications between countries. With such modern aides as the lan- guage lab, MHS students are learning to be the diplomats of tomorrow. Languages include studies in German, Latin, French, and Spanish, to give each student the choice he desires. English, a required course for every student in the first three years, can also be made interesting. English projects, such as those by the seniors, have helped make the times of the past come alive. The student is able to acquire a solid knowledge of lands abroad, as well attaining the basics of grammar and spelling. Speech and dramatics, is a course often ignored when thoughts of language courses arise. An elective, speech offers the student interested in pursuing the finer points of debate, dramatics, and public speaking, a good background. In the course of the year, plays were written and produced, the art of makeup studied, and a wide range of speeches written and presented to the individual classes. 9 Science and math courses teach organization of facts into meaningful relationships sm-nt t R 10 Medina offers its students an opportunity to obtain a taste of each of the principal sciences: bi- ology, physical science, chemis- try, and physics. Through biology, sophomores evolve a theory of the origin, development, struc- ture, and functions of plants and animals; through chemistry as juniors, an understanding of the composition of substances; and, through physics as seniors, a knowledge of the phenomen a of matter and energy. It is through this study and laboratory work which changes facts in print to reality that the students are able to meet a scientific future confi- dently. Math courses enable the stu- dents to understand some of the sciences more fully. There is a variety of math offered here, from algebra I and geometry to trigonometry and calculus. This year, a computer has been added to the equipment of the math de- partment, and has fascinated many students. Some students have even written programs for it. I I Medina’s superb fine arts department affords 12 countless opportunities to think and perform creatively Music and art are tal- ents no well-rounded person can afford not to refine. Medina ' s fine arts department excels in en- couraging interests in all forms of beauty, from a perfect note to an oil portrait. The marching band provides entertain- ment at football games after long, hard days of practice. The concert and pep bands have also added to our enjoyment and prestige. This year the art class- es have kept not only the showcases full of their work, but also the halls and lobby. Besides this active creating, there are courses which seek to develop an ap- preciation for the fine arts through historical background. 13 Vocational courses build basic skills and business aptitudes The Home Economics department is one that is often overlooked when it comes to praise. In this department, the girls are taught all of the fine arts of homemaking, and their interest in building good and stable homes is encouraged. Home Economics has been added this year to the curriculum as a vocational course, based on the same standards as DE and DCT. Business education courses afford, not only un- limited opportunity for students planning to pursue a career in business, but also offer personal-use sub- jects, such as personal typing and notehand which aid in improving study habits. Boys have found industrial arts and mechanical drawing not only interesting but fun. In the machine shop, they are able to tinker with engines and learn valuable things about machines. 14 15 Social studies department produces true citizens In order to produce these responsi- ble citizens, the social studies depart- ment gives a basic background of the histories and governments of dif- ferent countries. Special attention is given to the United States in studying civics, economics, and American his- tory. These subjects are highlighted by films, maps, and charts. In class- rooms, discussions were long and heated as the Presidential election presented many points for arguments. 16 17 ADMINISTRATION • STAFF • STUDENTS 18 Robert A. Thirty-two colleges and universities are represented by staff members. The ranks of the sixteen members now holding Mas- ter degrees should be swelled by at least five by September since several teachers plan to acquire the added degree this summer. Our educators also bring a broad background knowledge of foreign nations to our classrooms. From the European coun- tries of England, France, Germany, and Austria, to Cuba and Mexico in the Caribbean, to the Philippines in the Pacific, comes first-hand information from faculty members who have travelled or resided there. Summer, while it is a time for some to pursue further training, or a vacation, is also a time for staff members to add other skills and knowledges to their credentials by taking jobs as commercial painters, cafeteria cashiers, food processors, youth counselors, resort managers, or fair program service managers. Our students are, indeed, truly blessed by a faculty with ex- perience, training, and a wide general background. Thus, this faculty fs well qualified to lead the youth of MHS to accomplish their lofty goals. Today ' s youth lost a friend and inter- ested teacher with the passing of Mrs. Keck last autumn. Mrs. Keck, who so ably and graciously substituted for Mrs. Hold- ridge in Latin and English when school began last September received injuries in a fall. A short time later, death unexpect- edly claimed this vivacious and young-in- spirit teacher. Students at Medina Senior High School will surely miss her cheerful smile, her unselfish, helpful attitude, and her sincere interest in them. Yes, today ' s youth has indeed lost a friend in the passing of Mrs. Keck. 30 Carl Schusterman Mechanical Drawing B.A., Ohio Un iversity Margaret Muren German B.A., Notre Dame College Jack Jaskol Diversified Cooperative Training B.S., Kent State University Secretaries are always waiting with a friendly smile Louane Kowal Secretary to Mr. Hedrick Marjorie Poetsch Secretary to Mr. Rios Jean Titus General Office Jean Thornburg Superintendent ' s Office Norma Kreiger Clerk ' s Office Ruth Rickard Secretary to. MEDINA-CLOVERLEAF The Battling Bees opened the season with a victory over the Cloverleaf Colts. Ken McEwen scored on a three-yard jaunt in the early slages of the game. Cloverleaf took the kickoff and was unable to move the ball. When Medina regained possession of the ball, Jeff Karson broke loose for 52 yards and the score. Cloverleaf came back quickly, gradually moving the ball in for a TD. The third quarter was a defensive battle between the two teams. Medina and Cloverleaf exchanged scores in the fourth quarter to arrive at the 18-12 final score. MEDINA-BAY VILLAGE Medina suffered a bad night of fumbles and missed assignments which resulted in a closely fought battle and a 15-14 defeat. An early interception by Rick Dye and a 25-yard romp by Doug Jones put Medina on the scoreboard. Bay Village gained pos- session of the ball late in the second quarter on a long punt return which put them in touchdown position. They scored in the closing seconds of the half which ended in an 8-8 tie. The Rockets scored in the third quarter with a pass reception, added the extra point, and left Medina behind seven points. Medina had a drive in the fourth quarter to the 4-yard line but failed to score. Bay took over the ball and fumbled in the end zone. Jones recovered for Medina for 6 points. The Bees, failed in a bid for the PAT and were shy a single point. Clevidence ' s perfect onside kick was recovered by Keefer. Medina penetrated into Rocket territory but were stopped by a costly fumble recovered by Bay. Bay ran the clock out leaving Medina with defeat. Al Keefer s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-s for the ball as he is closely guarded. MEDINA-AVON LAKE Undefeated Avon Lake kept their record unblemished as they won their second conference encounter by a score of 40-6. The Shoremen ' s aerial attack overpowered the Medina defense. The only Medina score came early in the their quarter on Medina ' s first drive. Content, Avon Lake went home with another victory under their belts on their way to another Southwestern Con- ference championship. MEDINA-OLMSTED FALLS Medina beat Olmsted Falls every way but on the scoreboard. The Green and White racked up 283 yards rushing to the op- ponents ' 170. The Bees were called for illegal buzzing too many times and were penalized a total of 145 yards. A fine exhibition of running by Doug Jones is shown by his average of nine yards per carry for that night. Paul Header provided the only score of the tilt for the Locals in what proved to be one of their best games of the season. MEDINA-ROCKY RIVER The Bees suffered another bad night of missed assignments and too many penalties as they fell to the Rocky River Pirates by a 20-0 score. Medina racked up a 195-185 edge in rushing, but a few breakaway plays by River and the Bees ' 115 yards in penalties put the Pirates on top. The Green and White started the game off on the wrong foot by throwing an interception on the first play from scrimmage. Medina played the first part of the game inside their own twenty. By the end of the first half the Bees had only one big drive but it failed to materialize because of too many incompleted passes. Ken McEwen finds daylight as he runs to the outside. Pat Karson and Doug Jones combine their forces for a reception. 79 Much hard work and long, intensive hours of practice Terry Scherz moves into a swarm of Eagle defenders. ‘9 Mark Hunter rips around end for a long gain. MEDINA— FAIRVIEW Medina, plagued throughout the season by bad luck, dropped another game to Fairview by a score of 35-0. The Warriors dominated play throughout the game, and controlled the ball well to beat the Bees. MEDINA-NORTH OLMSTED The NO Eagles scored early in the game on a breakaway play. The Bees buzzed back on the following series with a drive that was capped by a fine run by Terry Scherz. The second unit backfield, replacing the mainliners because of previous in- juries, proved to be effective. Early in the second half, Medina took control of the ball and punched in for the score. The lead was shortlived, however, as the Eagles came right back to score for a tie. An Eagle score in the fourth quarter proved to be the difference. The Beecoming game ended in a close 22-14 defeat. MEDINA-WESTLAKE Medina set out to avenge a disappointing season as the Bees 1 Tom Clevidence moves in for a block to give Larry Collins running room. 80 produced a team of which Medina could be proud Paul Header throws key block that releases Terry Scherz for the score. scored two touchdowns in the first quarter with runs by Mark Hunter and Larry Collins. At this point it appeared to be a run-away game for Medina as Westlake ' s attempts to score were futile. The Bees tallied again and had a 21-0 halftime lead. The Demons were able to score 22 points against the Bee second team but this was not sufficient. The 34-point total found Collins with 18, Hunter, 6, Header, 6, Jones and Williams with 2 each. MEDINA-WADSWORTH The Grizzlies and Bees met on a mud-drenched field to renew the long rivalry between them. The Grizzlies proved to be as tough as predicted. Wadsworth scored twice in the first half on long, breakaway runs. The Bees, plagued all year by a third- quarter jinx, suffered two more scores by a spirited Wadsworth team. The single Bee score came late in the fourth quarter on a pass from Olds to Header. The PAT was unsuccessful and the game ended in a 28-6 decision. A scrappy Medina defensive team awaits the snap. Glenn Olds blocks pass attempt for conversion by the Grizzlies. Cross Country makes an impressive first showing at MHS Front Row: B. Rollins, J. Gulledge, S. Stewart, B. Muha, K. Williams, L. This year we have attempted to portray the opportunities afforded students here at MHS. Students attending school in order to seize these opportunities were affected by affairs and events from the local school level to international happenings. In this presidential election year, we heard names such as Romney, Rockefeller, Reagan, McCar- thy, Kennedy, and Humphrey. While the Vietnam War became the big political issue, the United States found itself in an embarrassing situation with the Pueblo Incident. Violence continued in the world; and, here in the United States of America, Martin Luther King and Senator Robert F. Kennedy were gunned down by assassins ' bullets. College students continued to riot for many and varied reasons and took over administration build- ings on several campuses. Stories of LSD and marijuana mingled with the strike news. Death claimed the lives of two Alabama women— Helen Keller, who gave courage and inspiration to millions; and, Governor Lurleen Wallace. On the plus side, medical history was made in South Africa where the apparent first successful human heart transplant took place. Top movies were The Graduate and Bonnie and Clyde. Kids boogalooed and shingalinged to the music of Spanky and Our Gang and The Electric Prunes. Tiny Tim became a sensation. Sayings such as groovy and blew my mind were frequently heard. The local city scene found community leaders planning for a sesquicentennial celebration in June, 1968. A new court annex took shape and the fire house got a face lifting with a coat of red paint. Through all the happenings, school went on about as usual with the activities of daily routine, not to mention the usual term papers, reports, tests, athletic events, food and financial drives. The change in administration was very smooth. The courtyard took on a new look under the watchful eye of Mr. Carter, while the front of the building received a dressing up with trees and shrubbery. Seniors celebrated upcoming graduation by visiting Cedar Point and rearranging the furniture one evening after hours. Too soon, it is all over, this senior year of 1968; but it certainly is not forgotten. The Editor extends sincere thanks to the staff members and her adviser, Mr. Webb; to Sylvart Stu- dios, the Gazette, our advertising patrons, and to you the subscriber. Thanks for permitting us to pilot you through the course of Opportunities Unlimited here at MHS. —Kathy Kline, Editor 192 MEDINA COUNTY DISTRICT LIBRARY A □ 0 0 1 E 1 7 ? b 7 7 5 For Reference Not to be taken from this room
