Stock Market , Income Tax , Voting , Termpapers Are Part Of Jan Hattery and Diane Morton are quite pleased with their selection of stock shares. After checking the latest quotations, they ' ve discovered they ' ve made a million — well, at least on paper. Rick Brobst, Bill Wolfe, Macy Hallock, and Dave Claypool, we bet, are using that old alibi — I have a paper for social studies — to get admittance to the library. Can ' t you tell they ' re working diligently? Social Studies Social sciences include American government, economics, AP History for seniors. Junior courses included American history, world his- tory, and American Heritage. Economics students had fun playing the stock market and working on income tax returns. All students were given a look at a real vot- ing booth as the lobby was used during reg- ular elections. Now, we ' re sure that voting procedures were not taught this way at MHS. Well, anyway two of our juniors decided to get in some early practice when the voting booths were in the lobby during the primaries. 22

Carolyn Nichols and Pam Simones fiddle during orchestra practice — only trouble is one is doing Fiddle Faddle, while the other is doing The Hot Canary. Fine Arts Occupy Prominent Place In Local Curriculum Music to suit your fancy could be the theme of the music department. Students may enroll in marching and concert band, mixed choir, girls ' glee, or orches- tra. Marching band starts practice before school be- gins in the fall. Double periods daily help this out- standing unit to perfect its prize-winning perform- ances. A music theory course aids students to obtain a major in music at MHS. After school, pop music may be heard from the music wing as members of the Stardusters, the local dance band, polish their big band sounds. Probably the most outstanding production of the art department this year was the second annual product of Living Pictures. Students painted backdrops of famous artists ' works and then used live models for their presentations. Course content varies from the usual painting to rug hooking, sculpting, enameling, and other crafts. An art history class is also offered to enrich the curriculum in this department. Janet Clark hopes she has caught the eye of her band di- rectors with her little gimmick of practicing early in order to get that grade raised. 21

Physical Education and Driver Education Provide Different Pace During Student ' s Day Arnold Petty, Jackie Miley, Chi Chi Johnson, and Julius Klopp tee up. Physical education is required of all students each year. This year the girls participated in volleyball, archery, modern dancing, gymnastics, soccer and golf. Boys par- ticipated in wrestling, softball, and archery. Driver education was delayed this past year as the school received a new car which had to be outfitted with a second brake. It seemed doubtful to many of the students that they would ever become drivers; how- ever, under the careful guidance of Mr. Platz, they didn ' t manage to dent any fenders. Okay, pupils, instructs Mr. Platz. Take your places and roll • III em! Mr. Weygandt ' s boys physical education class snaps to attention. 23
