Even now, high school students reminisce about the good ol ' days. They attempt to recapture memorable moments that occurred such a short time ago. At class reunions, and even small friendly gatherings, it is inevitable that someone will say, Do you remember ... ? All too soon we forget the name of the boy who was continually falling asleep in history class or the girl who had so many wonderful things to tell about her one and only. Remember anticipating the inspiring pep rally; attempting to procrastinate studying for that quiz in order to help decorate the school; pushing your way out of study hall; getting a choice spot on the ledge; or, finally when the chips were down, coming through by just plain persistence in staying with it until the job was finished — whether academics or athletics? Do you remember how frightened you were how eager you were as a sophomore; how you were as a junior; or, how proud, if not you were as a senior? If you can recapture these mixed emotions while browsing through this edition of the MEDINIAN, then our efforts will have been worthwhile, and this book will have the lasting quality that is so necessary for a book that will be treasured through the years. So, if you are ready, then let ' s start right now by saying, Remember ... as a freshman; very confident somewhat sad, SENIOR HIGH SCHOG ’ BOARD OF EDUCATION , ; MAURICE PATRY. PRESIDE ' NELSON F. These two educators are our superintendent and our high school principal. Under their leadership, the number of individual buildings has risen to five with additions at three of the buildings in order to accommodate the ever-increasing student popula- tion. While the building program has forged ahead, the academic life of the student has not been neglected. Many new and advanced courses, as well as vocational offerings have been added to the schedule. Opportunities for the worthy grad- uate has also increased with the forming of the Dollars for Scholars fund. These past six years have been ones of definite progress and a great por- tion of this success is due entirely to our two very able leaders, Dr. Gotaas and Mr. Loughridge. Marion E. Pygmalion will never be the same since Carl Ritter and Judy Comer gave their interpretation during AP English. Doug Jones and Tim Whitaker are only too glad to welcome Kathy ' s kute kamera to the heritage English section in order to break away from the grind. Spanish , French , German , and You can be sure that Tim Holston will come up with some gem since he is deep in thought pondering the question at hand. Mr. Cowden ev idently is instilling in his student teacher btan Bosler, a few tricks to pull on his frosh English class during a spelldown. 18 Latin Provide Excellent Reinforcement For Study In English Classes Sandy Harrington and Carla McComas aren’t really sure they will make good senoritas because they haven ' t taken a particular positive attitude toward turrones that was served in Dr. Piquer ' s Spanish class. Tom Clevidence dreams of far distant places such as Paris as he views the travel posters in the dean ' s office. Since English is considered as the foundation for good communications, course content in this department in- cluded much writing, the reading of poetry and prose, from Shakespeare to the modern novel. Students may elect speech to fulfill the English requirement. Speech students present the daily student bulletin. Seniors may elect business communications as their four year of English. Foreign languages offered at Medina Senior High this year include French, German, Spanish, and Latin. French and German are offered for three years; Latin, for two years; Spanish for four years with an Advanced Placement course making five years for outstanding students. In May, students may take the AP test for college credit hours. The test covers not only the language techniques but also the history of Spain. Language classes have continued the International Club, which was founded last year. Meetings are held monthly. Installation of a new language lab supplements other teaching aids in this department. Jean Hutchinson and Bernie McDermott just last through the 9th period by enjoying the publication, Bunte, during Miss Muren ' s German class. 19 J. Ritchie of Mrs. Oswald ' s Art I class gets a live model in basketball star Tony Werner. Tony discovered that this form of keeping in shape proved to be more work than performing on the court. Mrs. Christy gives tips to Peggy Kapp and Mary Ingram during a session of sculpturing. Right — A member of Art I class tries his hand at sketching during a live-model session. 20 Carolyn Nichols and Pam Simones fiddle during orchestra practice — only trouble is one is doing Fiddle Faddle, while the other is doing The Hot Canary. Fine Arts Occupy Prominent Place In Local Curriculum Music to suit your fancy could be the theme of the music department. Students may enroll in marching and concert band, mixed choir, girls ' glee, or orches- tra. Marching band starts practice before school be- gins in the fall. Double periods daily help this out- standing unit to perfect its prize-winning perform- ances. A music theory course aids students to obtain a major in music at MHS. After school, pop music may be heard from the music wing as members of the Stardusters, the local dance band, polish their big band sounds. Probably the most outstanding production of the art department this year was the second annual product of Living Pictures. Students painted backdrops of famous artists ' works and then used live models for their presentations. Course content varies from the usual painting to rug hooking, sculpting, enameling, and other crafts. An art history class is also offered to enrich the curriculum in this department. Janet Clark hopes she has caught the eye of her band di- rectors with her little gimmick of practicing early in order to get that grade raised. 21 Stock Market , Income Tax , Voting , Termpapers Are Part Of Jan Hattery and Diane Morton are quite pleased with their selection of stock shares. After checking the latest quotations, they ' ve discovered they ' ve made a million — well, at least on paper. Rick Brobst, Bill Wolfe, Macy Hallock, and Dave Claypool, we bet, are using that old alibi — I have a paper for social studies — to get admittance to the library. Can ' t you tell they ' re working diligently? Social Studies Social sciences include American government, economics, AP History for seniors. Junior courses included American history, world his- tory, and American Heritage. Economics students had fun playing the stock market and working on income tax returns. All students were given a look at a real vot- ing booth as the lobby was used during reg- ular elections. Now, we ' re sure that voting procedures were not taught this way at MHS. Well, anyway two of our juniors decided to get in some early practice when the voting booths were in the lobby during the primaries. 22 Physical Education and Driver Education Provide Different Pace During Student ' s Day Arnold Petty, Jackie Miley, Chi Chi Johnson, and Julius Klopp tee up. Physical education is required of all students each year. This year the girls participated in volleyball, archery, modern dancing, gymnastics, soccer and golf. Boys par- ticipated in wrestling, softball, and archery. Driver education was delayed this past year as the school received a new car which had to be outfitted with a second brake. It seemed doubtful to many of the students that they would ever become drivers; how- ever, under the careful guidance of Mr. Platz, they didn ' t manage to dent any fenders. Okay, pupils, instructs Mr. Platz. Take your places and roll • III em! Mr. Weygandt ' s boys physical education class snaps to attention. 23 Vocational Courses Prepare Business Machines students — Dave Williams and John Nixon remember to honor our local secretaries Marjorie Poetsch and Jean Thornburg with corsages on during National Secretaries Week. Kathy Beers takes advantage of a quiet moment in the shorthand lab to get in some extra pages of practice by listening to a tape-recorded lesson that comes to her by way of a wireless student unit. Ed Currier figures this extra work during business machines class should earn him a few polished points toward a grade. Here he is folding, counting and sorting programs that were printed in the department for a concert. Diane Myers checks her letter to see if it will pass the mailability test before she submits it to the instructor during shorthand transcription class. 24 ■ ' Tv Students For Employment After Graduation Rick Blevins zeroes in with a drill press as he completes a project during metals class. Lee Roby and Larry Thompson work the bugs out of a printing job before they start the final product. Although many of our students enter college after graduation, some of them do not remain for very long. Lucky are those who have enrolled in some vocational training for they are able to secure jobs to support themselves. Business courses include typewriting, two years of shorthand, office practice, business machines, bookkeeping, record keep- ing, and business comm unications. Courses in mechanical drawing, electricity, wood shop, weld- ing, metals, and graphic arts are offered to students not in- terested in the business field. All classes may enroll in home economics. Next year the course will be upgraded by being converted to vocational home eco- nomics. Do too many cooks spoil the dessert? Not true, say Pam Henniger, Pam Williams, and Michelle Mutter as they team up to prepare a delicious dish during home economics class. 25 Would you believe that Mike Brooks and Dick Aufmuth are actually doing one experiment correctly in chem lab; or, is Mr. Van just waiting for them to get in deeper to prove they don ' t have all the answers. Science courses inspire students to look to the future in space. The frosh, not to be outdone, take to their own rockets as Don Gifford, Tim Myers, John Treleaven, and Rob Wilder prepare to blast off. Okay, Even Day, what do we do next? Jeff Jones, right, figures Evans knows all the answers so he should get us out of this predica- ment; Rick Vereb, meanwhile, does just that in physics lab. 26 In this age of computers , a basic knowledge of mathematics Top: Jime Gowe and Mike Brooks get some aid on a solution to a problem from Mr. Saxton. Above: Mr. Haas puts Kathy Morris out front to operate the slide rule for Ray Clemens, Cindy Richardson, Rick Vereb, Jack Conley, Billie Meyers, and Kendra Fridav. Rick Ganyard confidently works a problem for Teresa Kaszian and Mr. Brewer during ninth period math class. is essential In the space age with science and math being brought to the forefront, schools are always on the alert to prepare their students to meet the challenging needs of the world. Our school is no exception. Science courses include physics, regular and chem-study approach to chemistry, biology in two approaches and physical science for fresh- men. This year the math department added a course in ungraded math and a math IV course for those seniors who do not wish to take AP math. This course includes instruction of the slide rule and analytical geometry. Courses in geometry, trig, algebra and general math are also offered to students. Dave Judkins makes his adjustments as Marge Bonadio does the frowning as the survey team prepares to go to work to complete an assignment in AP math. 27 Extra Staff is Needed for Smooth-Running School Plant Above, the gals who prepare lunches for the a Iways-hungry student body: Mrs. Failor, Mrs Geinke Mrs. Palinchik. The club has had several discussions, on sub- jects such as flying saucers and the art of playing chess. The club also attempted to solve any problems suggested by its members. Math Club ' s most useful accomplishment this year has been learning to use the slide rule in three easy lessons given by Mr. Brewer. 32 FHA Highlights Year With Skating Party ROW I: B. Dunbar, S. Informal initiation (pure torture and humiliation) took place at a home basketball game in December and was followed by a slumber party. At the beginning of basketball season, members dressed in the team ' s warmups and presented a skit at a pep assembly. Names of basketball brothers were drawn and good luck charms were presented to the brothers. Refreshments were also served to the players after home games. Club members ushered at the Barbershop Quartet Benefit for Linda and Rich, and sold tickets at the home football and basketball games. In April, GLC held a dinner meeting at which new mem- bers received their GLC pins. As a community service project, GLC members presented a musical program at the County Home. Competition was keen, as each class tried to outdo the other. The results of the contest were two beautiful floats that carried the members of the Homecoming court in a parade to a gigantic bonfire on Thursday night, October 13. The court, Celia Gerding, Billie Meyers, Linda Montgomery, and Cheryl Riegger, had been selected by the stu- dent body, but at this time -nobody knew which of the four girls was queen. In pre-game ceremonies Friday night, the court was introduced to the fans and the announcement of the choice of queen was made. Crowned by last year ' s queen Laura McLaughlin, Billie Meyers of- ficially began her reign as Homecoming Queen, 1966. The Homecoming Dance, Bee-Witched, was held on Saturday evening. Doug Jones seems to be the only Bee man in a pack of Cloverleaf players. Gary Hetrick catches a pass for big gain against Bay Village. CLOVERLEAF: Initial -game captains led the Bees to their first win of the season with an impressive 28-0 victory over the Cloverleaf Colts. Touchdowns of 5, 8, and 12 yards by senior halfback Gary Het- rick, and an I I -yard sprint by junior fullback Tom Clevidence, paced the Medina victory. A tough defensive line held the Colts on a goal-line stand in the final minutes of the first half. Medina dampened the remaining Cloverleaf sparks in the second half and went on to an easy victory. BAY VILLAGE: The 1965 SWC Football Champs, the Rockets of Bay, proved no equal to the tough Medina defense in a 20-12 victory for the host Bees. One of the largest home town crowds turned out to see Gary Hetrick and Jack Conley pick off five Bay passes. The game was highlighted by an electrifying 63-yard run by sophomore Ken McEwen which put Medina on the scoreboard first. AVON LAKE: Medina suffered its first defeat against the Avon Lake Shoremen in a 28-6 loss. The Bees had one of their worst nights with several fumbles and interceptions. Medina ' s only touch- down was made by Bob Bates early in the first quarter on a sweep around the end. Ken Sweet receives Most Improved Player of the Year award at football banquet. To Tie For Second Place In Southwest Conference Halfback Gary Hetrick plunges over for a score against Rocky River. Jack Conley (82) and Ray Eckert (65) are the other Bee gridders. OLMSTED FALLS: The Bees whipped the Bulldogs of Olmsted Falls in a slashing 22-0 victory. Medina got their first TD on a short-yardage pass from Bates to Letterly. The second TD came on short- yardage runs after Conley caught a pass on the fifteen. Bates threw a long pass to Hetrick to the one for another set-up in the third period. Bates punched it in from there. ROCKY RIVER: A touch Bee defense was the trick in beating the Pirates of Rocky River. It was the Bob Bates plays-off the block as he moves in on Fairview player. Hetrick also scored with less than a minute remaining from the Pirate three. Bates and Conley combined for a 45-yard pass play and another six for the Green and White. FAIRVIEW: The Bees dropped a heartbreaking game to Fairview ' s Warriors, 30-26. A large Home- coming crowd turned out to watch the Bees fight hard and tediously against the clock. However, they were unable to pull out a victory. The game was very important in that the Medina II needed to win to stay in contention for the SWC crown. NORTH OLMSTED: Scoring a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter, the Bees ruined North Olm- sted ' s hopes of a victory. Conley ran back two Eagle punts to set up short Medina drives of 24 and 20 yards, each capped by one-yard plunges by Hetrick, making it 12-6, Medina. EASTLAKE: Two long touchdowns via passes from quarterback Bates to end Conley, proved the dif- ference in a 14-6 Medina victory. A rugged goal- line defense by the Bees during the final seconds of the first half enabled the Bees to preserve the win. The game was the last SWC encounter for the Bees and the victory put the Medinians in a tie for second-place honors. Coach Bill Tibbits on the sidelines receives communication from coach in the press box. WADSWORTH: A long rivalry between Medina and Wadsworth was reviewed this year after an intermission since 1953. A snow-swept field and temperatures below freezing didn ' t stop either team in displaying fine defensive efforts. A fumble by Medina early in the game proved fatal for the Bees. The Grizzlies took advantage of the oppor- tunity and marched the ball in for the score. The conversion was also good. The Bees came back with a score as Bates ran it across from the one. Medina failed in their attempt for the extra points and the score stood at Wadsworth 7, Medina 6. The students and faculty pictured in this book at work and at play were affected by local, national, and world-wide events. This was the year of Twiggy, pierced ears, mini skirts, saddles, green and white, morning announcement ad libs, and would you believe? In music, the Tijuana Brass still rated tops along with The Monkeys. Many will remember the political scene in which a lady and a movie star were elected as governors. One senator took to the recording field while another senator and a congressman were censured by their col- leagues. While police were having troubles with race riots and protest marches, the President of the United States kept in the news with a Meeting in Manila and surgery. The space race was marked by the flights of Gemini 10 the Lunar Orbiter 2, and the tragic Apollo fire which took lives of three astronauts. Discussion of the war in Vietnam was heard almost everywhere. The world mourned the loss of movie industry ' s Walt Disney while films such as The Sound of Music, Doctor Zhivago, and Virginia Woolf were box office drawing cards. Other headlines came over Wil- liam Manchester ' s book, The Death of A President, and the housewives ' boycott of supermarkets be- cause of high food prices. Teachers even got into the strike habit along with labor; and on the local scene, we even had our own school board fuss. The Editor wishes to express sincere appreciation to fellow staff members, especially Bi llie Meyers and Kathy Kline, who always came through when needed, our advertising patrons, photographers, our friends at the Gazette for so much help, and, of course, you, the subscriber. Without you, this volume would not have been possible. It is true the school year is needed, but we hope that this edition will live up to its goal: to help you Re- member when ... — Karen Partridge, Editor 176 ' ll • • .
