First I had to make arrangements with the space commission. I received a phone call to pick up my passport from Marilyn Oster, secretary to the Space President, Craig Halli- will. When all my papers had been taken care of, I went to the medical lab for my shots. While there, I stopped to talk with Dr. Rod Yeager and his nurse, Merrily Tubbs. Merrily told me that Carol Day son was now head nurse at Milky Way General Hospital. Friday night I had some extra time, so I went to a basketball game between the Martian Monsters and the Space Trotters. I noticed the Monsters ' new manager was Bill Abrams. Early Saturday morning I went to the space port where they were just getting the ' ' G. L. 70” ready. Rod Hartman, one of the engineers, was discussing plans for a new ship with its designer, Ron Emerson. Rick Shurell ' s voice came over the loud speaker and announced our take-off plans. Boarding the plane, I discovered my pilots were Frank Dunbar and Jamie Culler. Our flight took off on schedule and as soon as we were air borne, Kaye Burnett, our hos- tess, explained the safety equipment. During the flight we saw a new movie starring the famous actor, Pat Loss. Some of the other passengers were Ray Moore, who was on a business trip for Interplanetary Motors; Ruth Rickey, the first woman astronaut; and Tom Williams, one of the best known race drivers on Hexachlorophine. We stopped at a satellite to re-fuel and pick up some more passengers. I had a few hours, so I decided to take one of the many guided tours. A group of government work- ers was on the trip with us. They were: Becky Ruppert, John Church, and Kay Fulton. Mike Thomas, our guide, showed us the new Crater Night Club, owned by Lonnie Miller. This week the star performer was Sally Montgomery. He also showed us the lab where Bill Stemecker and Jack Wideman had discovered a rare breed of animal call- ed a ' ' platygiraphant.” After the tour I stopped to do some shop- ping and bought two books, a cook book by Pat Shank and a novel by Kathy Searles, both of which were sold to me by Penny Tench. I bought a new dress in one of Sally Stayton ' s exclusive shops. It was designed by Ellen Washburn and modeled by Betty Gregory. Bonnie Clement was the manager of the store. The rest of the flight was quiet with one exception. A hot rod rocket driver, Skip Jones, nearly ran into our ship. Luckily, Chief Kelly Baxter was cruising around and gave him a ticket. As our ship neared Hexachlorophine, an- other was preparing to leave for the planet, Frica. Frica had been discovered by Dan Hopp, and now a group of explorers, organ- ized by Mary Lou Frantz, was going to furth- er explore the planet. Other members of the expedition were Chuck Eddy, photographer; Doss Harvey, head of topography; and Bill Riebau, mechanic. They were taking some new ape cages, designed by Terry Melle and Ron Delac, to the Interplanetary Exposi- tion on Frica. Inside the terminal our papers were check- ed by the security guard, Jim Beresford. I turned to watch one of the rockets take off and saw Leo Thompson trying to jump on the tail section, but he was unable to do so because it was already occupied by Norm Rolling. At the customs department Maxine Head- er returned my luggage. I heard a distur- bance outside; Barb Shanta, famous inter- planetary spy, was being whisked away in a patrol car by Paul Kubis. I stopped in a coffee shop where LaDonna Neufield, Betty Brooks and Sue Van Kannel were eating lunch before returning to work at the Saturn Spring Company. At one of the tables a group of teachers was talking. They were Phyllis Bagley, Eleanor Szaranski, and Barb Phillis. I checked in at the Pluto Palms Hotel and was startled to see the film actress, Renee Siegfried, with her two producers, Steve Cisar and Jerry Eby. I didn ' t want to stay in my room, so I took a bus tour of the city. While on the bus I saw Marty Hastings just leaving Jane Mox- ley ' s Gym for Women Wrestlers. I also caught a glimpse of Jerry Foster ' s Modeling Agency and a night club where the Strat- overs: Bud Herrle, Bob Nichols and A1 Far- ris were appearing. I stopped to eat lunch at an exclusive restaurant owned by the famous boxer, Bill Beck. Sitting at a table near me were two big shots from Specific Motors — John Cam- py and A1 Thiele. A fashion show was pre- sented with Jeanne Ream and Maggi Brown modeling. I heard that Marilyn Charters was soon to appear. Back at the hotel I talked to Linda Curtice, the switch board operator, who told me that Phyllis Lane and Linda Plues had recently moved to this planet to open a dance studio. She told me that Ron Yost and Doug Walker had become very famous in a new sport, Jupiter Jump Rope. The next morning I took a trip out of the city. There were many experimental farms. Some of them were owned by Terry Ober- holtzer, Paul Kovalik and Darrell Ruder. Nancy Sprankle was running a large horse ranch, and down the skyway was a large chemical firm headed by Leroy Gunner. I decided to stop and talk to some of the people working there. The receptionist, Donna Dixson, told me that there was a beauty operators ' conven- tion in town. She told me that Cathy Doyle, Sharon Hull, and Judy Burton were coming, and Diane Dreibelbis was to make a speech on the latest hairdo, The Rings of Saturn. Sue Tiffner, one of the secretaries, showed me through the plant. Reg Campbell was head of the advertising department. Larry Ptak could be heard discussing some tech- nical problem with the head of the depart- ment, George Laurenz. The company law- yer, Dick Laribee, was in his office talking to his secretary, Augusta Meincke. The ac- countant, Jim McClain, was going over some figures with the treasurer, Ron Reich. On my return to the city, I passed a new school building dedicated to Pat Horvath, who had started a new trend and had made Hungarian an interplanetary language. Speaking of schools, 1 heard that George Smiley received an award for cross country coach of the year. I found that both Sandy Longacre and Nancy Morton were teaching at a grade school on the planet. There are several large hospitals here, and while I didn ' t plan on enterin g one, I did find that several old friends were work- ing at the Venus Hospital. Dr. Barthalomew was one of the chief residents and Les Peter- son was head of psychiatry. Doris Buchan- an, Donna Freese, and Linda Fodor were on the nursing staff and Pat Taylor was the chief dietician. Bill Dwyer had previously worked at the hospital but had gone into private practice, and Judy Akers was work- ing as his receptionist. I learned that Nanci Hinkel was employ- ed as a social worker for Ted Hubbel ' s or- phanage. I went out to dinner and saw Dan Allen talking with Roy Lehman about the prospects of their forthcoming marriages. At the table next to me were three businessmen: Tom Gallatin, Ted Van Boxel, and Ken Rud- es from Interplanetary Business Machine Company. A group of secretaries from the same company was eating dinner also. They were: Kay Brown, Sue Kaszian, and Barb Horkey. After dinner I went to a water show where I saw Kathie McCarthy swimming in a shark tank and Connie Zsambok water skiing. There had been a lot of preparation for the show. Janet Gransee worked on the scenes with the help of Carol Patrick, and Bob Ben- nett worked on the lighting. I passed Paul Michaels ' photo studio and Dan Well ' s auto shop on my way back to the hotel. At a newsstand, I picked up a magazine. I opened it and found that Sue Hornbeck was on the editorial staff, Cathy Schelkle was art editor, and Barb Thomas was home editor. One of the articles in the magazine was about the famous home of the very wealthy Sandy Wilson. There was also an article about the big business direct- ed by Don Nye. In one of the pictures I noticed Kathy Jones and Barb Lewis busy at their desks. In the hotel lobby I met Sandy Fulton, head of a large art concern. She told me that Mary Smith, Karen Shipman, and Wayne Winchip were working in her company. The first two were employed in the office and Wayne was working as a designer. Ann Veirs stopped by the hotel to say hello. I was thrilled to hear that she was president of the Hexachlorophine branch of the Sun Economists Firm. When I went down to the desk in the morning, Jane Skidmore checked me out, and I made my way to my new home. It ' s funny how small the universe is be- coming! ! In their eagerness and persevering attitude, they earned the reputation of being the Battling Bees. Our boys always fought to the very end and never gave up. They brought the long sought VICTORY to Medina on Senior Night by conquering Oberlin. All of us know that we have much to be proud of in our Battling Bees, and to all of them, from all of us, goes the best of luck in the future. 1961 FOOTBALL SQUAD meat ; FRONT ROW: Randy Robins, Bill Beck, Denny Ferguson, Bob Bradway, Bill Dreibelbis, Chuck Bates, Jeff Largent, Dave Stewart, Kurt Survance, Ed Chamberlain. Compiling an impressive 15-3 mark, the varsity Bees established a new school record for the total number of wins in a season. Dan Allen broke the in- dividual scoring record with a total of 38 points in the last game of the season. In the final statis- tics, our Bees not only brought to Medina a second place berth in the Southwestern Conference, but honor, which we hope will be an inspiration to future M ' .H.S. teams.
