Medina Senior High School Medina, Ohio • I Contemplating retirement, our devoted superintendent has instead decided to return for another school year. The Medinian Staff, along with many friends, extends its best wishes and high- est hopes for continued success. Through your efforts, Medina City Schools, a part of a growing community, has progressed year by year. Many thanks for a job well done. 3 Also, to our good and faithful servant as teacher and prin- cipal, who has given many hours of his time and effort to teachers and students alike, we extend our best wishes. Wise judgement, thoughtful words of praise, and a happy Good Morning are a few of the many kind deeds we appreciate. To you, we wish a most pleasant and happy continuation of your duties as principal of Medina Senior High School. We all say thanks to a fine gentle- man, and above all, a wonderful friend. 6 7 £ emor FIRST ROW: Mrs. Teagarden — Advisor, Jim Cooper — Vice-President, Sally Schmidt — Secretary, Hal Nichols — President, Dave Sgrc — Student Council Representative, Mr. Brewer — Advisor. The Senior Council membership consists of the senior class officers and two representatives from each of the five senior homerooms. It is the duty of the council to act on issues of the class. Different committees within the council are in charge of graduation cards and announcements, caps and gowns, and commencement and baccalaureate. One of the duties of the council is to promote money-making projects for the New York trip. There have been many suggestions. Those carried out so far are selling peanut crunch and pecan turtles and having two car washes. 8 WES ALVEN December 4, 1941 CAROL BAILEY May 30, 1942 GAIL ANKLAM April 8, 1942 LINDA BARSIC September 22, 1942 10 BILL BATCHELDER December 19, 1942 JON BEHR May 11, 1941 MARILYN BERBERICK September 12, 1942 BARB BECK January 12, 1942 RALPH BERRY October 14, 1942 11 BARB BODA December 20, 1941 BARB BOROWY April 15, 1942 BILLY BROWN November 17, 1940 BURT BRINKER October 1, 1942 ED BOWERS April 29, 1942 CHARLIE BROWN January 7, 1941 12 SANDY BUCHANAN June 30, 1942 HOWARD CALAME January 21, 1943 CONNIE BURTON December 27, 1942 CAROL BUSHMAN November 17, 1942 CAROL CAMPY December 4, 1942 JILL CALL July 24, 1942 13 MARCIA CLARK December 21, 1942 CAROLYN COE May 6, 1942 KEN COOPER June 2, 1941 JIM COOPER April 8, 1942 14 LARRY DAVIS November 30, 1942 DANA EASTON December 16, 1942 STEVE DEMUTH January 9, 1942 JUDY EDLER August 1, 1942 15 LARRY ELMERICK January 14, 1942 MARTHA FEKELMAN August 24, 1942 KAREN ENGLERT February 9, 1943 JIM FISHER November 15, 1942 16 ELAINE FODOR December 14, 1942 LINDA FULLERTON November 13, 1942 DORINE FRAMBAUGH December 29, 1942 MARY LOU FULTON June 6, 1942 17 CARL GANDOLF November 5, 1941 BILL GARDNER October 8, 1942 BARB GERHART November 15, 1942 JOHNNIE GREGORY July 9, 1942 CAROL GARVER May 21, 1942 JOHN HAIGHT August 20, 1942 18 DOUG HERTEL May 9, 1942 BILL HARPER July 27, 1942 PATSY HALLIWILL June 10, 1942 DONNA HIPP February 7, 1942 JOAN HILL March 7, 1942 JIM HEWITT August 4, 1942 19 BARB HOBSON August 25, 1942 MYRON HOOD April 12, 1942 BRENDA HUBAL November 7, 1942 PEGGY HYATT April 4, 1942 LOU JARC March 25, 1942 KAREN HOFF April 8, 1942 20 WARNER JENKINS October 18, 1941 ROSALIE KEMPF August 28, 1942 MARGE JONES December 1, 1942 CHUCK KLEIN November 7, 1942 21 DIANE KREBS January 19, 1942 RAY LARIBEE July 11, 1942 JIM LANCE March 19, 1942 JERI LASOCHA October 28, 1942 22 RON LEEDS February 7, 1942 NANCY LINDEMANN April 7, 1942 KAY LEYDA October 24, 1941 JUDIE LINDER December 12, 1942 23 MARY SUE LUTZ August 27, 1942 JEWEL MAY May 10, 1942 KATHY MILICH August 31, 1943 NANCI MATTINGLY September 13, 1942 MADELYN MISKEL November 16, 1942 24 BOB MOLNAR July 26, 1942 HAL NICHOLS November 3, 1942 JUDY NEHRENZ August 15, 1942 GLENNA MOORE August 16, 1942 RON NICHOLS August 7, 1942 JOHN OBERHOLTZER September 11, 1942 25 JOYCE REED February 14, 1942 26 ROCHELLE ROCHE February 21, 1942 CLIFF REINHARDT March 19, 1942 JIM REESE March 26, 1942 RUTHIE SCHMIDT December 9, 1942 SALLY SCHMIDT January 28, 1942 JOHN SCHRIER February 27, 1942 27 SANDY SEELEY May 7, 1942 DAVE SGRO July 31, 1942 BRYAN SELZER December 7, 1942 LAURA SHAFFER May 8, 1942 28 BARB SHIREY August 6, 1942 CAROL SHAW January 3, 1942 ELEANOR SMELSER August 9, 1942 BARB SKURVID October 19, 1942 ROGER SINGLER February 6, 1942 29 MARIAN STEINDORF August 11, 1942 SUZANNE SWAIN June 26, 1942 ART STOCKMAN March 1, 1942 SHARON TALBOTT September 23, 1942 30 CAROL TUBBS April 1, 1942 SHERI TRIPP September 16, 1942 RAY THOMAS June 22, 1941 DON VARISCO August 12, 1942 ELIZABETH VERES October 18, 1942 31 KAROL WAY August 3, 1942 THERESA WEBEL June 3, 1941 BEV WILLIAMS April 17, 1942 32 KENT WILLIAMS April 4, 1942 SHIRLEY YEAGER September 22, 1942 DEAN WOODWARD January 22, 1942 BEV ZSARNAY October 23, 1942 33 KATHY MILLNER August 6, 1942 34 FIRST ROW: Tim Davis — Treasurer, Roberta Gates — Secretary, Tom Morton — President, Pat Whit- ney — Vice-President, Dixie Herthneck — Student Council Representative. It was their job to sell mums to help pay for the Junior-Senior Prom. They didn ' t do as well on this project as they had hoped to. They also contributed a very unique float to the Homecoming celebration. The other money-making project of the class was the operation of the concession stand during basketball games and during lunch periods. Though there was a lot of work required to accomplish their goal — raise enough money to finance the Junior-Senior Prom — the Juniors found in the work a lot of fun and a good experience. 35 Bob Bloom Judy Brown Sharon Burrer Paul Carlson Lanny Carter Barb Chase Kay Chidsey Bob Christy Ed Clapp Jen Clement Karen Cook Lorraine Craig Charles Davis Tim Davis John Deiss Betty Dunn Carolyn Dushenke Thom Emerson Dick England Jim Favri Jackie Fellabom Karen Fetzer Dean Fisher Sandy Fleming Stan Fodor 36 Larry Fowls Delmar Fuchs Barb Fuller Carl Gandolf Joy Gandolf Roberta Gates Jerry Gerhart Jim Gerspacher Helen Gottron Ken Gregory Judy Grove Tom Hague Joe Hanuscak Tom Hanzlicek Christy Harris Den Hastings Violet Hawke Ken Henke Glenna Henning Dixie Herthneck Bruce Hoff Karen Hollopeter Ralph Holt Bonnie Hoover Alice Horton Steve Hunt Pam Hurd Raymond Hutchins Marsha Hyatt Judy Indoe 37 Vic Jarc Kay Kaszian Lee Kaufman Terry Kennedy Holly Koppelberger Mary Lacquement Larry Marsh Diana McClain Marti McCoach Charles McEwen Barb McFadden Mary McNeal Alan Melle Sherry Mersing Edith Miller Francie Miller Danny Moore Fred Moore Orvilla Morris Tom Morton Shirley Moucha Garet Munger Sue Newcomer Mark Overholt John Palko Ellen Petersen Dean Pierce Jeff Post Bev Potts Jack Purdum 38 Jill Purdum Anthea Quick Carol Reed Karen Reich Penny Rickard Dave Ring Jim Roberts Cassie Rogers Linda Root Mary Jo Sauer Lynda Scanlan Dave Schelkle Dick Schelkle Diana Seamon Michael Sedgwick Diane Seeley Janet Shaw Weldon Shirley Tom Sigafoos Mary Simmons Carol Sinnet Fred Smith Sandy Spencer George Swart David Thomas Mary Thomas Pat Thomas Larry Tobey Jeff Tripp Carolyn Vanaman 39 Betty Varisco Orville Walker Ron Wass Bob Weble Bob Whitman Rick Whitmore Pat Whitney Ron Wolf Paul Wolford Roseann Woodward Dick Wurgler 40 Slopliomomi FIRST ROW: Sandy Lcngacre — Secretary, Barb Shanta — Vice-President, Leroy Gunner — President, Alex Bruscino — Treasurer, Jane Moxley — Student Council Representative. Their biggest project was the float they built for Homecoming. It was quite an un- usual float with no kleenex flowers to worry about. About forty boys tried their hand at football this year. We can ' t say that our team would have made all-state, but the sportsmanship shown at each game made up for our poor record this year. The 1960 Medinian staff would like to congratulate the Bees on this account. As Mr. Claggett said at the foot- ball banquet, We came in second at every game. Through two seasons of sports there were five outstanding girls out in front rooting for our boys. These were our well-known cheerleaders. In their snappy green ' n ' white outfits they cheered with all their might. When the score was low and the spirits were dying, they led the team on to victory. Six ambitious young distance runners from Medina High were the first to represent the Bees at area cross-country courses in many years. Though they found the competition from the more experienced Akron district runners very tough, our own inexperienced harriers made a showing of which we can be proud. Ken Henke, a junior, did extremely well, and may look forward to another successful year as a senior. 60 FIRST ROW: John Palko, Dave Ring, Ken Cooper, Jim Reese, Dean Fisher. Though there was no winning record set, each game proved exciting and enjoyable. Even in the games that we lost, we gave the opposing team a run for their money. Because the team made every game exciting by fighting to the end, the grandstands were always overflowing with Medina rooters. MANAGERS HOLIDAY TOURNAMENT Left to right: Charlie McEwen, Lee Kaufman, Norm Rolling Ralph Holt. Bill Gardner and Art Stockman accept the 1st place trophy for Medina; Clark Sheeley end John Sestina of Brunswick with the runner-up trophy. 63 Jim Cooper, Bill Harper, and Tony Aronica watch while Mr. Currens end Eric Loveman wrestle. The newest of the boys ' sports is the rough and ready game of wrestling. Each match develops the matmen in sportsmanship, character, and endurance. With the boys working hard, maybe next year we ' ll have a championship team. It would probably encourage the boys to win, and it would certainly boost their morals, if they were better supported by the school. Let ' s hope that they get more support next year. To start the day off, the parade that afternoon ended with wet and wilted hopes and kleenex flowers. Though our Bees did not win the game, the dance went off with all the fun and frolic that should be included in any Homecoming celebration. We know it will be one of the lasting memories of the class of ' 60. 70 Our Medina High School Musical Bees entertained during the half-time of all our football games with exciting and sometimes amusing shows. After foot- ball season their time was spent in preparation for the spring concert. The main event that every band member looks forward to is the trip to some not-too-far-distant city. This year the trip was taken to Columbus where a joint concert was given, and a night was spent in fun and get-togethers. The only requirement for becoming a mem- ber of this club is an interest in teaching. At the meetings they learn about the college requirements of a teacher, about the securing of a teaching certificate, and about teaching itself. They also have varied guest speakers and panel discussions. One of the outstanding activities of the year is the opportunity to substitute at the Garfield School. This experience helps many to decide whether or not they want to enter the teaching profession. Another activity in which they par- ticipate is acting as guides at the Junior High open house. 78 FIRST ROW: Sandy Fulton, Ruth Hubler, Mary Lacquement — - Parliamentarian, , Judy Brown — Treasurer, Jewell May — Presi- dent, Mrs. Teagarden — Advisor, Jeri Lasocha — Vice-President, Theresa Webel — Historian, Karen Reich, Rebecca Rupert. A girl must have taken at least one year of home economics to be a member. Each month they have one outside activity besides their regular meeting. In December they had a hair-styling program. Also in Decem- ber the members entertained the women of the Pythian Sisters Home with a skit. A banquet was held in February at which their formal ini- tiation took place. 79 Quiz Bee Contestants FIRST ROW: Linda Gabelli, Karen Holf, Mr. Teagarden — Advisor, Madelyn Miskel, Cynthia Wildman. To be a member of the C.A.A., a person must be a junior or senior and should have an interest in history and current affairs. Some of the activities of this newly-formed club include dinners, guest speakers, movies, and field trips. Among the many activities in which the Y- Teens participated during this school year were the Y-Teen Formal, the Fashionation Premier, and a combined Hi-Y and Y-Teen dance. Many of their projects were carried out in order to earn money for some worthy organization. 82 Carol Garver, Brenda Hubal, Peggy Hyatt One of our most gala affairs this year was the girl-ask-boy dance com- monly known as the Y-Teen Formal. With the heavenly sounds of the A1 Day orchestra and a wonderful turnout, everything was set for the perfect evening. The decorations depicting a winter scene, the colorful dresses of the girls, and the sharp-looking boys created an atmosphere of gaiety and romance. 83 FIRST ROW: Miss Farmer — Advisor, Kay Orr, Kathy Milich, Shirley Jones — Treasurer, Carol Garver — Secretary, Linda Ga- belli — President, Karen Hoff — Vice-President, Mary Jo Sauer — Chaplain, Ruth Schmidt, Diane Krebs, Judy Nehrenz, Sue Lof- quist. There were many activities to keep the girls busy during the year. One of the outstanding activities was the competitive intra-club basketball game be- tween the Hobos and the Garter Girls. After a hard fight, the Hobos came out on top. Other activities were swimming in Akron, playdays at 6:30 A. M., and playdays after school with other G. A. A. clubs in this area. 84 The purpose of Hi-Y is to create, maintain, and extend high standards of Christian character throughout the school and community. The only requirement for being a member of this organization is that the boy must be a sophomore, junior, of senior. The boys went to the General Motors Research Center for one of their meet- ings. On February 27, they journeyed to Kent State University to prepare for the model legislature which they will conduct in Columbus at a future date. The faculty recommends possible members, and the club selects those who have the best qualifications. The choices for membership are made on the basis of scholarship, leadership, character, dependability, and sportsmanship. The activities of the club include selling tickets at football and basketball games and feeding the basketball team, coaches, and managers after the basketball games. One special project at the beginning of the bas- ketball season was the adoption of a member of the team by a member of the club. It handled the announcing at the sports events and provided the Star-Spangled Banner at basketball games. Disc jockey shows, morning announcements, and the audio part of assem- blies were some of their other activities.
