On August 20th, 1957, 40 boys reported for footbal.l. This was an ex- tremely low number and showed lack of enthusiasm, which is enough to give any Medina coach gray hair. Practicing twice daily, they came up with a football team of which Medina fans can well be proud. They might not have had the best team on the field at every game, but, they showed sportsmanship and fairplay throughout the season. The 1958 MEDINIAN staff congratulates you on this account. Even though our football players were a little on the blue side of things after dropping the Homecoming game to Rocky River, they cheerfully paid homage to their Queen and her court. Not only did the royal court deserve praise but the Bees themselves, for keeping their courage, spirit, fight and hope alive in themselves through-out the gloomy season. Along with the praise, congratulations, decorations, refreshments and regal ball, came the photos to keep in mind this wonderful time enjoyed by all. Bricker and Charles Varsity Coach Augie 64 The Medina High School basketeers are to be congratu- lated on their best season in the history of the school. With an even record of nine wins and nine losses, they break a record of eight wins in a single season ' s play. Lacking adequate height for a championship team, our Bees put up a good, tough battle in each contest. Led by co- captain Paul Bricker, the conference scoring champion, Medina fans enjoyed every bit of the season, for there was less than one minute of dull basketball. Wait till next year, was the scream heard from many Medina fans; for almost the entire varsity team was composed of Juniors, plus the fact that the Junior Varsity compiled the best record of any J. V. team also — a record of thirteen wins and three losses. Bill Whitney, Jim Reese, Art Stockman, Greg Winter, Dan Stadnik, Jim Lance. SECOND ROW: Coach Rios, Manager Arnold Ingraham, Jim Daso, Jerry Condren, Norm Goulding, Bill Gardner, Ron Popiel, Coach Scrivens. 65 We admit that the photography could be better; but our cheerleaders are hard to beat. These close-order drill-girls work the varsity games and are masters of precision when it comes to leading cheers and performing their whirling dervishes. Together with the perspiring junior partners who work the reserve games, the cheerleaders plan and conduct the pep assemblies that mean so much to the teams and to the morale of the school. 66 1 Linda Gabelli, Loretta Wright, Nanci Mattingly, Barb Burrow, Grace Johnson, Kaye Orr, Evelyn Kidder, Barb Beck. Cheryl Kirk, Secretary; Judy Quick, President; Mary Davenport, Chaplain; Brinca Jo Patton, Vice President; Kay Whisler, Treasurer 92 On the first day of school in 1954, we the senior class of 1958, began our four years of labor. Poised and confident, we elected our officers who were Ann Gilsdorf, president; Tom Holden, vice-president; Charles Hood, sec- retary-treasurer; and Scott Smith, student council representative. We sold refreshments after home football games and made a large profit, $3.25. We also collected tax stamps and change in home-rooms, and presented a This is your life assembly, to the student body. The sophomore year came rolling in, in 1955, and we elected Marcine Ewing, president; Jani Fodor, vice-president; Janet Good, secretary-treasurer; and Tom Holden, student council representative. Our goal was to make money for our senior trip to New York. We had bake sales, sold return address stickers for envelopes, tickets for a movie at the Medina Theatre, and ordered our class rings. Operation Frog was a success, or was it? We were the first juniors to attend school in the new Senior High School building and we brought in our class ' s first boy president. Butch Spitzer, and his cabinet; Tom Holden, vice-president; Judy Dye, secretary-treasurer; and Diane Wilson, student council representative. Mum corsages were sold at Home- coming as is customary for junior classes, a pancake supper was held in October, and class jackets were ordered before Christmas. A workday and car-wash was held April 27th, at which each class member credited his earnings to his individual account for his New York trip. Our Class was in charge of selling refreshments at the home basketball games, dances, and any other school function. The executive committee edited our class newspaper The Junior Flash . This paper informed the class about projects and where they stood in their individual earnings. The year ended with a bang-up picnic at Whipps Ledges on May 29th with swimming, eating, and the usual tomfoolery. Our treasury now had about $2,200.00. The Senior class elected as officers, Diane Wilson, president; Norm Mer- haut, vice-president; Susie Twigg, secretary; Janet Good, treasurer; and Ann Gilsdorf, student council representative. The student body elected Tom Holden, student council president. The class decided to have a senior council made up of an elected representative from each home-room. They were Mary Davenport, Marcene Ewing, Marlene Mathews, and Dick Simmons. In September the first edition of the Senior Flash came out. One of our projects was stuffing and delivering pamphlets for the Old Phoenix National Bank ' s 100th Anniversary. For the Homecoming parade, we designed and built a float with the title Swing- ing On A Star on which rode the queen, Pat Tiffner, and attendants, Susie Twigg and Alice White. We held a bake sale, two ham dinners, and sold Christ- mas cards and candy. One of our goals. Senior Class trip to New York, April 13 - 19th, came true. The other goal, commencement, is also coming true and all those who are worthy will receive a diploma. We are grateful to all who have helped us achieve our goal — particularly our advisors, Mrs. Schafer, Mrs. Hergenrader, Mrs. Neptune, and Mr. Houston. Senior Class of 1958 We hereunto set our hand this first day of June, 1958. 95 PAT FOLEY and MARY SEARLES The other day the two of us decided to go on a shopping spree in Cleveland. We left our husbands to take care of the children and neglected our household duties to spend a carefree day. Before leaving, we stopped for a quick cup of coffee at Shirley Potter ' s Restaurant. We hadn ' t been seated more than a few minutes when in walked Judy Quick and Karen Simon who had been busy becoming career girls. We had only a few minutes to chat when the bus pulled in and we dashed off. Upon handing our tickets to the driver we dis- covered that he was Morris Brown. As we sat in the bus we began to reminisce and talk of the good old days of the class of ' 58. Many of the girls had married and moved away. It had been a long time since we had seen Neva Cogar, Naomi Daugherty, Sue Gregory, Jean Hinckley, Nancy Belak, and Ruth Fekelman. As the bus driver speeded along we heard a siren and we came to a stop at the request of a State Highway Patrol. To our amazement, he was Jerry Reutter; and his assistant officer was Larry Blosser. After receiving the ticket we proceded on to Cleveland at a slower pace. As we neared Cleveland we went by the country club where we saw Barb Standen and Tina Haight riding their horses by the side of the road. Not far from the country club we passed the training quarters of Tom Kasel, famous heavy weight boxer and his trainer, Ron Moewe. We had heard that they rented the quarters from a rich multi-millionaire oil typhoon, Scott Smith. Suddenly the engine of the bus conked out and we limped into a nearby service station. Just as we pulled in, a car pulled out and we discovered it was Charlie Fisher and his wife Karen (Eaken) with an Indiana license plate. The station attendant. Bill Bessmer, came bustling out to see what was the matter and Jim Linder, his mechanic, began to look over the bus. After having the bus fixed, we continued to pick up a few more passengers. Linton Auble and Zeke Arters, now famous comedians, got on the bus. They told us that they had just seen a few of our classmates when they had been in Washington D. C. They had seen Bill Lindeman and Richard Nye who were in the House of Representatives. They had also seen Pete Schrier and Dick Simmons who were co-owners of a detective agency. Barb Veirs was doing very well as a famous lawyer in the Supreme Court and Marlene Mathews had become quite well known as an ambassador to Russia. Five minutes later we pulled into the Cleveland bus station. Feeling worn out from our exhausting bus trip, we went into the powder room to refresh ourselves. To our astonishment we discovered that Teresa Wightman was the matron. After talking to her, we decided to go to a restaurant to eat lunch. We found out the owner of the restaurant happened to be our former classmate, Roger Casto, and his chief cook was Dave Rodgers. The restaurant was beautifully designed with a fancy bar at one end of the restaurant. Guess who the bar tender was? It was Larry Blewitt. We rushed over to talk to Larry and found that he had been down to South America. He told us that he had seen Dave Smelzer in Brazil at the missionary station. Sid Dunkle also was living there and owned a huge sugar plantation. After talking to Larry, we sat down at a table and were waited on by Tom Maupin. Upon seeing Tom we asked him where his twin sister, Mary Lou, was. He in- formed us that Mary Lou was a home economist now. While eating our meal, the lights dimmed down and Mary Davenport appeared in front of the mike and began to sing a beautiful love song. After her number the chorus line came strutting onto the stage doing a can-can number. Some of the girls, we discovered, were our classmates. They were Pat Thomas, Judy Tripp, Joan Koba, and Susie Twigg. After the show we hurried over to Halle ' s to do some shopping . We both were interested in some cosmetics. The girl that waited on us was Myrtle Brown. Then we went up to the fifth floor to look at coats. There we saw Edna Sharpless looking at a coat. She told us that just a few minutes ago she had seen Chuck Hood and Judy Brooks in the toy shop looking for toys for their children. That reminded us that we should go to the toy department and get our children some little gifts. We couldn ' t seem to find the toy department, so, we asked the floor walker; and lo and behold, it was Karl Matulin. We got on the elevator and there was Loretha Williams, the elevator operator. We finally reached the toy department when we discovered Ann Gilsdorf who was the sales lady. After purchasing the toys, we decided to go to the tea room. Mary Ellen Takacs was the hostess and she showed us to a table. Linda Roshon waited on us. Then the style show began. The designer of the clothes modeled was Colleen Hill and she narrated the show. Two of the models were Jani Fodor and Alice White, former classmates. While watching the show a gypsy tea leaf reader came around to read our tea leaves. To our surprise it was Norma Snyder. After she told us our fortune, we continued on our way. We crossed the street and passed the Cleveland Trust Bank, and Elbert Spitzer ' s name was imprinted in gold as president and the two vice-presidents were Diane Wilson and Cheryl Kirk. As we continued on our way, we went into a small music shop owned by Bill Maple and Nancy Quillen. After purchasing a record, we bumped into Ken Kraus who was taking the day off from his job as professor of mathematics at Kent State. We went down to the Cleveland Public Library to pay for a lost book and discovered that Sylvia Taylor and Rita Armbuster were librarians. In another branch of the library, we found Pat Tiffner and Janice Allen who had jobs as secretaries. Becoming tired of our long day we decided to catch the next bus home. Just then the factories were letting out and the bus became quite crowded. Some of the workers were from our class of ' 58 ' . They were Hyel Bagley, Willie Krosky, Tom Plants, Frances Kunkel, Bill Berberick, Paul Beresford, Bob Caskey, Charles Davis, Dick Seamon, Dick Dirham, John Eller, Fred Gern, Ken Miller, Dave Holt, Karl Norris, and Eddie Klein. We heard that a lot of the girls had obtained office jobs and various other jobs in Cleveland as part time workers. Shirley Baxter, Margaret Carter, Verjean Duke, Evelyn Smith, Judy Dye, Barb Wass, Charleen Hasek, Janet Johnson, Doris Smith, and Delores Meincke are just a few Boy, those girls sure are ambitious to be a housewife and have a career. As we began the long ride home, Marcene Ewing sat down beside us. It had been a long time since we had seen her because she had been living in Arizona. She had just had her hair done and it looked lovely. She told us Linda Taggart had done it at her beauty shop on the out- skirts of Cleveland. Marcene also told us that Dennie Richardson and John Miller were intending to make the Air Force their life career. We opened the newspaper and saw on the front page that Ed Gallatin had won the Mr. Universe title. We also read a long list of people who had volunteered to go to the moon in the U. S. rocket, MOONSHINE. Some of the names looked very familiar. Why, of course, some of them were our classmates Ben Baldwin, Nancy Gregory, Bonnie Felver, Janet Good, Gloria Hartzell, Brenda Ribelin, Terry Chirdon and Frank Dorsey. We also read in the paper that Norm Merhaut had received his fifteen-year pin for outstanding leadership as a naval officer. We sure were glad when we reached the bus station. Before going home we stopped off to pick up our dresses from Brinca Jo Patton ' s Dressmaking Shop. That evening Sandy Siegfried and her husband came over to the party that we were invited to at Tom Holden ' s apartment. Tom entertained us with his dramatic ability. After telling Tom and Sandy about all the people we had seen that day, we decided that it would be a good idea to have a fifteen year reunion of our class of ' 58 ' .
