MEDINIAN Medina, Ohio 1957 1 Sidney M. Fenn B. S. M. A. in Administration Welcome to our new senior high school. We are so proud of our million-dollar build- ing and so happy to have a student body and faculty that mean even more to us, that we simply can ' t keep them for ourselves alone. We take pleasure in presenting our students and personnel at work and at ease in the pleasant atmosphere of Medina ' s new educa- tional landmark. Superintendent ' ' Educational landmark is right. It has been a pleasure for me to personally conduct dozens of visitors through our school, and I take pride in explaining to outsiders how provident our taxpayers have been, and how fortunate we are to have a board of education that has been so visionary yet immediately practical to give us this school. Now, with the help of the MEDINIAN staff, allow me to show you around the new building. Meeting here monthly or oftener is our Board of Education whom you shall meet first. Then the MEDINIAN staff will present the faculty, students, and activities. Principal 2 Howard E. Claggett B. A. M. J Wk 5 %r ■ , The setting for this pictorial story of community spirit and vision was a grass- covered field of Medina. The property was purchased for an eventual high school, but was used for sev- eral years as a parking area and Little Lea- gue baseball field. In June of 1955 the work of building a new school was begun. The cooperation of planners, builders, and weather rapidly brought to reality the dream of an ad- equate, modern educational building. On November 4th open house gave our community an opportunity to see the climax of the story that started with a dream and a grass-covered field. 4 FRONT ROW — Carol Eckert, Judy Harper, Mufti McDowell, Colleen Hill, Diana Cowling, Beth Strong, Sandra Stelzer, and Jeanne Barr. Like our new building, our MEDINIAN requires much planning and hard work to obtain the beautifully finished product which we have antici- pated. This year the yearbook staff had a regular class period in which to work on the Annual. However this does not mean that there was no work for the staff members after school hours. For the first time, also, the Annual staff enjoyed the privilege of having its own workshop in which to assemble its work. We are proud to introduce our faculty, other school employees, and each of our students. Now may we present .... Our Faculty EDITH ALLEN B. Mrs. Leister has been Mr. Fenn ' s capable secretary for six years, but is re- signing to devote full time to the job of homemaking. We know that she will be as successful and happy in her home as she has been here. Helping Mr. Haas with his financial and student accounting is Mrs. Dayson who has been a pleasing addition to our secretarial staff this year. We hope that she enjoys her stay with us as much as we enjoy her presence. What’s Cooking ? The cafeteria staff, under the direction of Mrs. Gienke, is enjoying the modern conveniences of our scientifically designed kitchen; and the two hundred fifty regular customers give evidence of the fine quality of meals served by the ladies. Ten buses transport them from outlying districts; private cars, motor bikes, and bicycles help some get here; while many are with- in walking distance. Our Board-owned buses are manned by John Hyatt, Ralph Waite, Wayne Crum, Charles Jacot, David King, Dick Gensemer, Charles Mumaw, and Albert Hood; and buses from Chatham and Lafayette are driven by Mac Whitman and Louie Farnsworth. Thanks to the character of our students, our attendance officer, Wayne Crum, has had a fairly easy job here; but a few “scoundrels manage to spoil his day occasionally. It takes all sorts of transportation and people to get us assembled and when we look around we see that there are different classes of us. Would you like to meet our seniors? They also sold Christmas cards, pen sets, and candy. Three very successful dinners were served to swell the treasury of the class and to give personal credit to the working members. The big event of the year was the Senior trip to New York. The excited class left Akron on Easter and arrived in New York, after a hilarious Erie train ride, ready for a week of thrills and fun. Tours were made of Chinatown, the Stock Exchange, Rockefeller Center, and the United Nations. Memories of stage shows, Cinerama, television and radio studios, movies, shopping, subways, and restaurants will remain as long as the visitors — and perhaps the New Yorkers — live. The class ' first project was the selling of mums for the annual home- coming celebration. This project was no sooner completed than the class began selling tickets for the pancake supper held on October 26 in the school cafeteria. The operation of the Snack Bar at noontime and at home basketball games also boosted the class treasury. As a climax to a busy year the class sponsored the Junior Senior Banquet and Prom. We ' ve met the faculty and students and have had a few glimpses of school life, but we haven ' t seen anything yet! Top-notch musical and drama- tic organizations, athletic teams, clubs, dances .... I always get carried away like this. But what are we waiting for? Let ' s move along and see for our- self. FIRST ROW — Norman Goulding, Bob Swingle, Tom Tubbs, Tom Plants, Jim Wells, Jon Figland, Bill Whitney, Brent Dudas, Jerry Lash, John Gilbert, Jerry Condren, and Bob Caskey, Manager. On August 20 forty-five boys turned out for Medina ' s Varsity football team. Good weather and excellent attendance encouraged the team to keep fighting against odds; but the season was nothing to write home about. We expect to have better teams in the future due to the experience our reserve team received this season. 48 Sam McEwen Jack Yost Mike Collins Bob Swingle Bob Schelkle David Holt Ed Gallatin Jim Neumeyer John Alden Bob Pacholski Paul Szaniszlo MANAGERS Bob Caskey Willie Krosky Jim Auker Walt Chidsey 49 Homecoming A roaring bonfire at the athletic field on the eve of homecoming shed light on an army of football rooters determined to fire up such heated en- thusiasm that our squad would burn up the gridiron the next evening. Queen Joni Anderson and her attendants, Sharon Miller and Joleen Fodor, reigned in regal splendor at the game; but after the smoke of battle had cleared, it was plain that it takes more than enthusiasm and royalty to win football games. The homecoming dance that followed in the school cafeteria eased the sting of defeat, however. To the near-professional music of the Stardusters, Medina High School students of past and present enjoyed an evening of dancing, under the spell of our Queen and her court. Four pretty and athletic Varsity Cheerleaders have cheered for both the Varsity Football and the Varsity Basketball squads this year. They have given the boys plenty of support and boosted their morale tremendously. These four cheerleaders are seniors Joni Anderson and Sharon Miller, Pat Tiffner, a junior, and Joanne Bushman, a sophomore. For the first time in many years Medina also had male Varsity Cheer- leaders. The two handsome and agile men were John Alden and Charles Ptak who have done a superior job, and have been hailed by student body and team alike. The Reserve Basketball squad had five vivacious cheerleaders to boost their spirits. They are Janice Fodor, Barb Standen, Alice White, Judy Dye, and Ales Jo D ' Amico. 51 Be wary of Gary Pointed head Are you sure about that? SECOND ROW: Gene Bricker, Mike Thiele, Jack Yost, Karl Webel, and Mr. Rios, coach. Medina had a great group of boys on its basketball team this year, al- though they didn ' t do too well. Medina won only two games of the eighteen starts they made. The team was out there trying at every game. The lack of height was the main downfall. In practice they were kept in shape by their coach Augie Rios, who was just as disappointed as the boys with the season. The team coming up next year looks good if it gets a little height. 54 Reserve Basketball FRONT ROW — Dan Stadnik, Ernie Brod, Greg Winter, Willie Krosky, Bill Whitney, Jim Wells, Jim Auker, Bob Swingle. A special honor was bestowed by Ashland College when it invited our band to perform on its campus for its homecoming game. The above picture shows the band strutting its stuff on the Ashland gridiron. Waiting for the downbeat, we see the Concert Band below, as it presented its annual winter concert — a two-night billing at the Junior High Auditorium. 63 Beverly Carter, Diane Wilson, Mr. Stacy, Leon Patry, Marcia Englert, and Karen Simon. SECOND ROW: Roger Canfield, Franchot Ballinger, Steve Demuth, Warren Breese, Jean Graff, Linn Carter, and Bob Warner. Sweet or torrid — you name it — are appropriate for the numbers this group presents for the dancing pleasure of the students here. After-game dances and several other billings in the area have kept this group pleasantly occupied throughout the school year. The Concert Orchestra, below, fills a need of both students and the public who enjoy the strings and symphonic atmosphere. These students made appearances at the spring concert and at Commencement. Choir Vocal music is enjoyed by Medino High students as it is the world around. Mrs. Fenn has no difficulty getting results from our choir, but rather has difficulty in stopping the vocalizing as the members leave her room for other classes. The choir is pictured here at their spring concert. JPRWE ■ .• . .
