As symbolized on our cover, each year more leaves fall from the tree, some to stay near the mother plant, and some to float away, never to be seen again. The Medinian staff of the class of 1955 wish to present this scrapbook to you, the student body of M.H.S. We hope that every time you open it fond memories of your high school days will drift back to you. ADMINISTRATION ■ } T! IH HOWARD E. Principal B.S. With only 5 regulars back from last year’s champion- ship team, the team built up into a strong team. The team’s record was four wins, one tie, and four losses, but the only game in which they were really outclassed was against the Wadsworth Grizzlies. The team played every game for sixty minutes and exhibited fine sportsmanship dnd were complimented for it after their 6 to 0 victory over St. Marys. They were one of the hardest working teams we’ve had in years. We’ve brought on five, selected by you, the student body, to support our “Bees” and lead them on to victory. They are (reading from left to right) : Faith Svoboda, Betty Arters, Nancy Miller, Phil Shaw and Gary Snyder. They are all new to Medina as cheerleaders this year with the exception of Faith. They had their first practice sometime in the middle of July and worked very hard during the rest of the summer. When school started they practiced twice a week and any other time they had a chance. We, the students of Medina High School, salute these girls for the ex- cellent work and fine exhibition of sportsmanship throughout the year. 57 Preceding the homecoming game with Rocky River, Queen Freda West- fall and her attendants, Nancy Williams and Johanna Figland, were driven around the square followed by a parade from school. Just before the kickoff Queen Freda presented the football to co-cap- tains Roger Anderson and Ron Standen. After a game full of thrills and excitement the final score was in favor of River. Following the game a dance was held at the high school auditorium where Freda was crowned Homecoming Queen for 1953. HOMECOMING 58 VARSITY SEATED: Ed Raymond, Bill McClellan, Jim Venus, Ronnie Bryenton, Nils Englund, Ron Duke. STANDING: Alan Medley, manager, Roger Anderson, Gary Davis, Roger Coe, Darrel Seibert, Roy Wagner, Harvey Carter, manager. The basketball team, with their captain, Jim Venus, enjoyed a very good season. The team won eight games and lost six, ending the season in a tie for second place. The boys had a very high spirit and worked very hard at practice as well as in the games. 59 HOTSHOTS Ron Bryenton Roger Anderson Nils Englund Ron Duke Gary Davis Bill McClellan Ed Raymond Jack Richardson 60 HOTSHOTS Darrel Seibert Jim Venus Roy Wagner David Cooper Roger Auker Alan Burnett f . —w 7X S|| Hugh Cover Frank Dull Roland Fish 61 HOTSHOTS 62 RESERVES SEATED: Gary Silcox, Alan Burnett, Roger Auker, Dave Cooper, Gary McDonald. STANDING: Hugh Cover, Frank Dull, Fred Fri, Mr. Dailey, coach, Roland Fish, Ed Fullerton. The reserves worked very hard at both practice and in the games. The one handicap the team worked under was lack of height. This was helped when Jack Richardson came to play for the reserves. Although the re- serves ended up with eight losses and six wins, the season went along very well. 63 YELL GALS Faith Svoboda, Betty Arters, Nancy Jo Miller, Phyllis Shaw, Garlene Synder. Practice started two weeks before school started and continued through football season. This year the band adopted the idea of line leaders. Mel Vidika was drum major and he and the majorettes made a wonderful showing. Some of the year’s outstanding shows were Ohio Sesquicentennial, Gay Nineties, and a Blues number. We will agree that the band put out wonderful shows each week. (Missing from picture, Colyn Few) The Stardusters practice every Wednesday after school under the guid- ance of Mr. Stacy. They furnish most of the music for the dances after football and basket ball games plus other activities at which they are asked to play. These students receive no credit for this, but they do it because they enjoy working together. n i oTjf ' g c o £ g = K iSS o O il ' O tH l ■ co is b t3 5 § - 03 T5 oJ.S - up 1 o Ch .n 03 ° 1 q; ° jcO Q 3 CO ,7 ;-ei| lSt| 5 „ r C 2 3 SP-- w S-S Sr a) +r a; to aj ' S 03 S ° SS - o , O 3-t o 11 Jj o ; c _ 0) c r 03 « g % ' T3. oW y O -? 03 , ?H CD cu _ cjr ' iz ' , u ° y 03 “ c te-i CO 03 ££ 03 O „ CHj3 1 0) CO £ O ■S K ■ s« 03 cn a 03 S g cy S So PQ- c - c o CO o § rX !H m ' v, 6 fl .t5 jc 0) -s. Yell-Gals Musical Bees Boys Become Medina ' s cheerleaders this year are Faith Svoboda, Betty Arters, Garlene Snyder, Phyllis Shaw, and Nancy Jo Miller. All of the girls are cheering for their first year except one, Faith Svoboda. Faith was a cheerleader last year so she has had some experience. This is an advantage as Faith can help the girls with many prob- lems that come up. The cheerleaders started practicing the first of July and are still going strong, hoping to improve for every game. The girls plan all of the pep assem- blies and decorate the audi- torium for eve ry game, at home or away. Each of the girls has worked hard. The work is di- vided evenly, with no one doing more than the others. The cheerleaders have two goals they want to reach. They want to be the best cheerleaders Medina has ever had, and to cheer our football players on to victory at every game. Stardusters The Stardusters spent many hours of preparation for the homecoming dance. The mem- bers who put forth this effort were Wanda Thompson, alto sax; Nevin Lantry and Marilyn Wetzel, tenor sax; Myron Mor- lock and Roger Suddleson, baritone sax; Tom Jones, Don Canfield, Karen Schmidt and Nancy Gross, trumpet; Ray- mond Fenn and Bob Pelton, trombone; Jack Longacre and Lindalee Smith, drums; Sarah This year the marching band of M. H. S. consists of sixty- eight bandsmen, four majorettes and a drum major, ably di- rected by Mr. Richard Stacy. Mr. Dague assists him each fourth period and does the an- nouncing of the games over the new public address system. Our band started fall practice August 30, and has thus pre- sented four complete shows. The first, presented at the Kent Roosevelt and Wellington games, was based on a vacation theme. The second, presented at Amherst, was built around great personalities in show busi- ness. This show will be re- peated for the Medina fans at the stadium tomorrow night when the Bees play Fairview. The Homecoming show was built around the color Blue. This half-time extravaganza featured three different and difficult dance routines. Be- cause of the complexity of this show, two weeks were required to prepare it. Therefore, the band, as a group, did not attend the Oberlin game. To prepare a new show the band first has several indoor sessions to familiarize them- selves with the new music. Then they march to the sta- dium where they learn their individual positions in each for- mation. During the week, the band members, divided into small groups, give up at least one study period to learn any dance steps to be used. After the music and the marching formations are well in mind, the chnw ic r n+ tncrolhor anH nran. On August twentie dina Bees met to l season. The Journalism class put out seven monthly editions, one of them a huge six page Christmas issue, and the Medinamiter. The class sold football programs to raise money. The members of the Journalism class have learned many of the fundamentals of newspaper writing and have had a good time doing it. Under the supervi- sion of Mr. Dague and headed by Bill Golder and Raelene Schlechty, the staff worked together and learned together, which adds up to one of the best Medin- amites M. H. The Medinian staff of 1954 has done its best to bring you the most complete Medinian, 1954 annual that it is possible to publish. This has involved late hours and hard work, well blended with foolishness and fun. As the year progressed the rubber cement, dummies, galleys, slide rules, and hot words flew thick and fast to beat the deadline, but as we view the finished product, we of the staff feel that the work was more than worthwhile.
