Our first class meeting was held on September IS, and we elected Kay Parish president. Our members have already made their presence felt in the many worthwhile activities M.H.S, offers, such as music, drama- tics, and athletics, We are now making plans for our first big party, the Freshmen-Sophomore Hop. All of us hope to be a credit both scholastically and morally to our ship, the M.H.S. HISTORY OF SOPHOMORE SEAMEN On September I3 l948 we came back to school with all the other classes this time as sophomore seamen That name makes us real ize that we have already sailed one quarter of the way along our high school course and hav ing gone through our freshman apprenticeship really have our sea legs Now we are looking forward to the rest of our years at M H S to work study and enjoy the good times which only our school can give us With Ronnie Hall as our president we have al ready planned a number of fine parties All of us are making plans for taking our place in the junior class activities and studies next year HISTORY OF LIEUTENANTS JUNIOR GRADE In i946 we entered senior high as green as any other freshmen class with Ed Dornbirer as president Many of the fellows went out for football basketball and track and brought us honors while the girls went out for G AA Y Teens and many other activities The class as a group sponsored a dance that was very much en joyed by the whole school There s a saying all good things come to an end and so did our freshman year However very soon we as Sophomores came back at the familiar call of the school bell Our second year we felt almost like old timers and we sailed along with Dick Parish as our president Some people feel that the sophomore year is most trying but we found ourselves breezing right through it by planning a class party for the school cheering our fellas on in sports and serving for the Junior Senior prom Once again the summer crept by us and now we are launched upon our third year high school course with Nancy Burris as our capable pres: dent Under the sponsorship of Miss Allen Miss Vandervort and Miss Hitzelberger we chose our class rings put out a swell annual for a l grand senior class, and gave the best prom ever held in Medina High School auditorium. HISTORY OF SENIOR LIEUTENANTS Being forty-niners should make us gold dig- gers, but we're just a hundred years too late for that. We forty-niners made our debut in September, l945. This was our freshman year and all this hum-drum and excitement was new to us. We elected our class officers as did the other three upper classes. During this year the officers had a cornparatively small job to do, although the class had a play called School Daze'f and the annual class party Nineteen forty six saw Bob Voshall at the helm for the forty niners in their tenth year of school This year the class log records that the class party was held in February with a Valen tine s Day theme The busiest of the four nigh school years came in 47 our junior year The yearbook got off to a swell start at the beginning of the year with Lois Miller and Gwen Gibbs as co editors The Junior Senior prom was well planned and the big night was scheduled for March 6 This was per haps one of the best proms in Medina High School history Then came the final cruise on the M H S The year started in the usual way with the election of officers Alan Batchelder was elected presi dent Other seniors to receive fame and fortune were Nancy Henniger who was chosen Home coming queen Dick Kornjati who was elected Student Council president and Reba Shaw and Bob Heniken who reigned as king and queen of the junior senior prom CLASS OFFICERS OF I948 I949 lpictures on class dividersl President Vice president Secretary Treasurer Student Council Rep President Vice president Secretary Treasurer President Vice president Secretary Treasurer Student Council Rep President Vice president Treasurer Secretary Student Council Rep FRESHMEN SOPHOMORE JUNIOR SENIOR Kay Parish George Shumaker Arlene Winebrenner Wilma Jones Eugene Horkey Ronnie Hall Harold Shaw Dolores Palko Nancy Burris Dick Parish Dave Ellis Jim Holden Alan Batchelder Tom Evans Joan Anderson Rosemary Poor Bob Voshall I I - I . - Q . The visitors, however, were unwilling to be Medina's first con- quest of the season and went home with a l3-7 victory. Berea was more obliging and provided no trouble as Medina racked up l9 points while holding Berea scoreless. The journey to Norton Center proved unsuccess- ful as the junior varsity walked off the field with a 20-l4 defeat. Rolling up the largest number of points of any Kungli gets a pass. A defeat from Berea, l4-7, closed the season for Medina, with a record of two wins and three defeats. Robert Salisbury completed his first year at Medina as coach of the junior varsity and proved to be a very able one. The Rinky Dinks, playing Rittman and Amherst each twice, came through with a 50-SO record, de- feating each opponent once. Ralph Stumpf, also completing his first year at Medina, showed fine coaching ability and is well liked by his players. 2' Q 7 wZY?'QMQi we .. ,ww ww ,W -1. . fg. v ,ee , l, ,, ,M HQ, V f' in T A 3 ,h J, . 1 'sv . ,xii ,Y X ki K1 Ae J if mmqm X nur' J-A-f Rickard, Louro Lee Beoll, Pct Neue S4 ' a5'aAlmflvalL -70 TOP CENTER READING CLOCKWISEZ Glenn Hendershot, Bill Langford, Bob Hyde, Ed Dona- hue, Dean Brubaker, Junior Horvath, Ed Frantz, Douglas Maitland, John Dohanyos, Jay Alexander. Closing an unsuccessful season, the Medina Bees were able to capture only four wins from seventeen starts. Most of the games were very exciting and the scores were close, but the Bees did not have that extra punch to place Medina in the winning column. The team played its best and most consistent game against Amherst when the Bees dropped the Comets 47 to 45. The sixty members of the concert band gladly give up their noon hour to devote their time to an intensive band rehearsal. Band members have had many opportunities to play in select organizations, such as the All-County Band, with Manley R. Whit- comb, director of the bands at Ohio State University, as guest conductor. Several members played in the Canal Fulton Clinic Band. Mr. Frederick Ebbs of Baldwin-Wallace College worked with the band in preparation for the March concert at which he was guest conductor. During the past three years, the band has re- ceived an I or Superior rating in the district contest at Kent, and last year, entering the state contest for the first time, it walked off with top honors, the only band to receive a Superior rating in Class AA. It has hopes of repeating its performance this year. The band has sponsored many activities including a Band Alumni Dance, a Donkey Basketball Game, and the appearance of the nationally famous University of Michigan band under the direction of Dr. William D. Revelli. As a reward for their hard work, the members of the band are awarded a school letter in music, for their first year and a bar for each additional year. 0 FlRST , , ec ty, Kay Parish. It play- ed on the November 23 music program, participated in the district contest at Kent State University, and played for commencement exercises. Dr, Nathan l. Galin has been a fundamental factor in the success of the orchestra this year. He has willingly given of his time and patience to re- hearse the string section on Monday and the full orchestra on Wednesday, with Mr. O'Donnell directing it on Friday. The private and class lessons which Dr. Galin has given to the students have not only benefited them, but the orchestra as well. He directed the orchestra in its fine performance when it was featured on the March concert. Our thanks to Dr. Galin for his splendid aid and to Mr. O'Donnell for his untiring efforts. One of the best morale builders in the school is the Star- dusters, MtH.S.'s own swing band, as it opens a dance with its theme song Stardust . The Stardusters have not only made a name for them- selves but have advertised the school as much, it not more, than any other school organization. This group composed of thirteen students, eleven of whom are seniors, plays for most of the school activities, such as the G.A,A. banquet, class-sponsored dances, and after football and basketball games. Having played for many proms and dances at other schools, they are well-known throughout northern Ohio. The present members have played together for three years, a contributing factor to their success. We would like to take space in this article to give due honor to Mr. O'Donnell, the outstanding director of this popu- lar organization. lt is through his painstaking work and ef- fort that instrumental music in Medina has risen to the level which it now attains. He has not only cultivated a high in- terest in music from the grades through high school, but also has produced a state championship high school band and the number-one high school marching band ot northeastern Ohio. In addition he has worked with Dr. Galin to develop a fine orchestra. We wish to commend Mr. O for his outstanding work in Our school. 52 Vo COlisr jock Anderso 1 o Band, During the l948 football season, the M.H.S. march- ing band outmarched all competitive bands and was named the Number One marching band of the Southwes- tern Conference. lt was also rated high above many college bands. The unforgettable halftime shows featuring such themes as School Days and The Old Lamplighter will forever be remembered by students and fans. Add- ing to the snappy marching routines and formations were dazzling displays of fireworks and lights on the band members hats. A committee of band members, working with Director Vance O'Donnell, known to most students as Mr. O , carefully planned all the band shows. The members learned a new show each week, memor- izing all music, but the traditional block M and the playing and singing of the Alma Mater were always in- cluded. The rousing strains of Fight the Team and the exploding of a bomb could be heard each time that a Medina touchdown was scored. As an experiment, movies of most of the band shows were made by Ed Morton. This proved very successful in showing members their mistakes and aided greatly in success of the halftime shows.
