ALVIN EBERLY ROBERT SPENCER Custodian Custodian Student Custodian STUDENT COUNCIL The president's gavel sounded, and with it Donald Casey closed the last meeting of the 1944-45 Student Council. As the members left the room, some of the rest of us were wondering what had gone on at those meetings. What has our Student Council been doing this year? Have you fogotten our monthly paper drives? These have been sponsored by our Council via Mr. Leyda who succeeded in bringing in 17 tons of paper during january. Ed Dill, John Sloane, Mr. White and the Berea music students, Chuck Williams, Samlomi Rizk, E. jones, Berton Pogue, Marie Hutchinson, the F. B. I. representative-all of these enjoyable assembly pro- grams are Council-sponsored. Through Miss Mann's speech classes, there have been assemblies during the Red Cross drive, the Christmas season and the month of February with its important birthdays. Gur Senior Class presentation of the advantages and disadvan-, tages of Compulsory Military Training was a good send-off for the essay contest, too. Our assemblies have required the assistance of the music department -especially at Christmas and Easter. Surely you haven't forgotten that first Home- coming with its bevy of beauties? That idea was formulated in the minds of our Student Council mem- bers. These energetic representatives have sold M. H. S. pennants, banners, and caps-and what's more important-war bonds and stamps. Behind our mock presidential election, we see their efforts as well as in bringing our eight Lenten speakers to us. Dr. Overton's lectures on youth prob- lems were on their list of activities. We owe our thanks for the Wednesday noon dancing and the initiation of the open after-game dances to our Student Council. The lunch counter during the dances following the Amherst and Well- ington games, was manned by this organizations members and supervised by its advisor, Supt. Spencer. Of course, we knew that all of them had their fingers in the pie in making our carnival a success. Come on now, admit that it's been a busy year for this loyal group. Let's congratulate our Student Council. Thanks to: Pat Veesart, Clarice Woodruff, Pat Holden, Olive Shaw, Douglas Hanshue, Tom Doyle, Robert Spencer, Donald Selzer, james Beshire, Harry Aylard, Betty Miller, Bernard Jones, Pres. Donald Casey, Neil Whitfield, and Mr. Spencer. TUNE IN . . . ON THE FINAL PERFORMANCE OF . . . JOY HUF1-'MAN H bb : W 't' ' letters, Band 1, 2, 3,O4, ychofisf 2, 3, 4. Girls Glee G. A. Whitey Weber Football Captain Man of the year on the Green 81 VVhite Network. SPORTS COMMENTATOR Of STATION MHS presents His S ports Resume 1 944 - 1 945 Good evening, sports fans. In the following pages you will find a record of the main sporting events of Medina High School during the last school year. A week after school started our eleven tough pigskin toters got under way with their first game and took it from Fairview. Dur- ing that season they only dropped three games out of nine played. just after football season the Bee's hopsters got underway, starting a season of nearly twenty games. Of these twenty they won only five, but nevertheless, they were in there pitching. This is your sports reporter signing off. Whitey intercepts a pass FOOTBALL CUACHES Hurd, Masi, jeffrey Pre-Season This year's football season started out with a tough schedule of training at Camp Crag. About sixty boys started out on this toughening up period. They got up or were pulled up at about quarter to six every morning. Out of the warm bed onto the road for a delighgful four fast miles through the scenic countryside came next. Returning, the boys sat down to breakfast, and after that came rest-until about 9 o'clock. Workout Fundamentals took up most of the time 'til lunch before which one could take a quickie into the water if he felt like it. After lunch there was rest until two. Scrimmage and more fundamentals required the rest of their time until about five. Another dip was then in order. Supper about six or six-thirty. After supper the boys indulged in skull practice on plays, etc. and back to the welcome bed by nine or nine-thirty. After ten days of this the boys were ready to begin a successful season. y 1 awww- Wfxvmw ,U ' W ' N A Y x - A w'ax sff ff xx-4. Hanshue Henschel Holdridge Fairview-0 Medina-6 A perfect night, a big crowd, and a thrilling game was the set-up for the season's first, hard Won six points. Keeping in enemy territory during every quarter except the third, the Bees presented a continuous threat on the ground. In the air the Gorfido-Henschel combination clicked for thirty yards at one toss. In the second quarter Dave Hyde ended a 58 yard power drive with the only score of the game. Coventry-6 Medina-7 The Bees took the second game of the season by a slim margin. Our running plays, sparked by Pete Gorfido, paid oPf early in the second half when Hyde went over for the first six and completed the conver- sion for the seventh. On the first play of the third period Tey of Cov- entry scored, but big Benny Mercer was stopped short on a plunge for the extra point. Both sides threatened alternately, but were stopped. Spencer Jones Kisner Hyde Didn't Make It Rittman-7 Medina-8 Medina's first real test came during the third game of the season with Rittman. Until the beginning of the third quarter, the Bees were ahead by six points. Early in the third Rittman scored and made the con- version for a one point lead. But it didn't end that way. In the last forty minutes Medina backed Ritt- man on to its own one-half yard line. Then the center, the fumble, the tackle, and the winning points. Coventry Hits Medina Line Wellington-21 Medina-12 The Bees lost, but they went down fighting and fighting hard. The first three quarters proved the two teams, well matched. But in the fourth the Dukes provided more push than our boys could hold. They rang all their tallies up in that period. In the second and third quarters that Gorfido-Henschel combine ground out our two markers by means of a couple of well-placed passes. The Bee's aerial attack waxed to the tune of 120 net yards as compared to none for the Dukes. We lost, but that time it was no disgrace. Whitfield Barry Casey Brecksville-6 Medina-33 With the Bees' Dads there to cheer them on, the grid- ders took an easy victory from the Brecksville boys. Everybody on the squad got a chance at the needed experience and proved that plenty of good football stock is on its way up. The Bee's aerial attack was as good as the week before and netted 126 yards. Medina started scoring near the end of the first period and hung up 5 markers before the game was done. Clark Clearview-6 Medina-19 To the homecoming queen, the Medina Bees handed a gracious welcome and a victorious evening, sending the Clearview Clippers down to their second defeat at the hands of the Bees since that school has been in the league. Early in the first period Hidgon broke away for 68 yards with a pass from Hyde for the first six. The next two markers were scored in the second quarter, the hrst by Henschel on a pass, the second by Bueey off left tackle. The Clippers lone marker came midway in the third period, being set up by a Medina fumble. Higdon Blateric around right end New London-21 Medina-6 The New London Wildcats handed the Bees their second defeat in a tough battle at New London. Scoring first in the second quarter, the Bees held the lead only for a short time. Before the half was finished, the Wildcats tacked up their first seven points. Neither team scored the third quarter, but in the fourth the Wildcats marked up fourteen more points to take the game. Several of our boys were injured in the battle royal. Clark besieged Amherst-7 Medina-13 Closing the books for year's league games, Medina set down another victory against the Amherst Comets. The first six were scored early in the first quarter, being set up by an Amherst fumble. The second marker was racked up on almost the same circumstances as the first. Both touchdowns were made by Chuck Higdon. The Comets scored their only marker in the last quarter and the extra was made on a line plunge. The band accompanied the boys to Amherst. X X, KJV 1 3 Bucey Gorfido Blateric Wadsworth-33 Medina-0 In their final game of the season at the Wadsworth stadium the Bees were handed their worst defeat of the season by the Wadsworth Doyle Grizzlies to the tune of 33 to 0. Scoring in every quarter, the Grizzlies gained a net total of over a hundred yards more than the Bees. The Medina threatened seriously in the third quarter, but they were stopped by an intercepted pass. Both bands performed well. Veesart Gensemer Hazen an wa 2 78 ome omingf Pat Dunn reigned as queen of the festivities at the Homecoming game when Medina defeated Clearview 19-6. The votes were cast by the members of the football squad who had the privilege of selecting the queen and her attendants. Miss Dunn's attendants were all seniors. There were: Alice Cole, Virginia Higgins, Joy Huffman, Barbara Woodward, Virginia Wheeler and Peggy Jo King. This was the first time in history of Medina High School that a queen has been chosen for the homecoming. The homecoming festivities and the introduction of Queen Pat Dunn and her court was very colorful and a pleasant diversion. .l4 'f6C 6 0056 l Immediately after the raising of the flag, the band formed the letters HP-A-TH. Then Miss Dunn and her attendants were driven around the track in a red convertible coupe by Harry Aylard, President of the Hi-Y, and dismounted in front of the Medina stands. After the Queen and her attendants had been presented by Captain Whitey Weber and Miss Dunn had responded, the Choralettes serenaded them with A Pretty Girl and they were escorted to the section ,reserved for them in the stands. The playing ball was thrown to Referee McCaskey by Miss Dunn to start the game and the evening's festivities were wound up by a homecoming dance and open house sponsored by the Hi-Y at the Y.M.C.A. rooms after the game with joe NeH's Band playing. a Qi .rf fe'-'fs' . 4.1-eg dv-I 11,9670 pafailmnm .f4Zff67'LQ,C?7Zf5 0 JV W An 711 5.076533 Je 4, inn c.f-rd' 0 G 93 azfadwfila ,M Clark Henschel Gorfido Hyde Captains Higdon and Clark with Coach Hurd Wilson Higdon Doyle Riegger Weber Aylard' BASKETBALL SEASON Basketball season got under way about two weeks before football ended when practice started for some boys not playing football. After football, two practicing shifts were started, the varsity practicing until five o'clock and the reserves, until six-thirty. This arrangement continued throughout most of the season. During the '44-45 season the Medina basketeers won only five out of some seventeen or eighteen played. Although the hopsters showed plenty of pep on occa- sions, this good spirit and fast play was not consistent enough to win many games. Several games were lost by a point or two which is regrettable but cannot always be helped. The center position was played by Charles Higdon who maintained a consistent scoring threat from the center of the Floor throughout the season.
