THE GREMLINS COME TO MEDINA As everyone knows, those aerial pixies, the gremlins, first appeared in England from some ShangrifLa of their own to harass airfmen. ?k The1n attached themselves to the R.A.F., and every British pilot soon knew whom to hlame if he had unexpected engine trouhle, snapped ailerons, suddenly jammed machine guns, or holes in wings or fuselage. Some time after Pearl Harhor the gremlins first made their appearance among the American Air Forces. By the summer of 1942 them were strongly entrenched with us and husy drinking up the contents of gas tanks, icing wings, climhing into gun harrels to deflect hullets, and making motors sound as if they had suddenly nconked out. Last Decemher them heard of Medina. Many promising lads could he found there who were fine potential victims for their mischievous designs. How much hetter these future fliers could he harassed and hefdeviled if them first looked the ground over carefully and hecame thoroughly acquainted. The very next afternoon them got their chance. The pilot of one of a formaf tion of homhers was out of sorts and defying the rule that gremlins must he treated with respect, he gathered up several in his hand and threw them out the window. To our misfortune them landed right in the 1943 Nledinian and set up headquarters! Neither pleading nor threats had any effect. The gremlins were here to stay, losing copy, hreaking plates, and hlurring artists' sketches in their insatiahle quest for inf formation ahout the lwoys. The staff has hrushed and erased in vain, for, as you see, some still remain. Perhaps you have had moments of uneasiness or have heen the victim of an un' explained prank. You have? Everybody's getting himself polished and shined in pref paration for the day that school starts. September 8: We are so glad to see every' body back. There are a lot of new faces, too. Poor freshmen! They wander around looking so addled and bewildered. September 17: Our first assembly: Dusty Miller. Medinamite Staff plans first publicaf tion. Promises to be the best in years. September 18: Football game here. We beat the socks off Fairview! 19f0. September 21: Student Council gets under way. Hopes to improve assemblies and promote general understanding. September 24: Saw a preview of Victory Belles Review in assembly. Looking forf ward to real thing tonight. September 25: Medina continues to win: took Coventry, 31-0. September 30: First Medinamite out. It certainly makes good reading. October 1: Slim Williams gave a talk in assembly on the Arctic. It reminded us that winter was almost here. March 18: Mr. Melville, a glass blower, talked in assembly. Very, very interest' ing. We never knew glass blowing took so little hot air! March 25: Music Program in assembly un' der the direction of Mr. Wagner. March 29: Mrs. Clara Polly talked to the girls on The High School Girl in the War. March 31: The second every pupil test. Everybody looks either deeply befuddled, or smugly pleased with himself. April 13: Started our Lenten Service. They seem to have an extrafspecial significance now. April 15: Heard fine speech on Why I Am An American. April 27: Poor seniors! On the brink of graduation, they struggle manfully through the Scholarship Test. April 30: More tests! May 3: Sophomore assembly. Very good! May 7: The Spring Music Festival. Our musical performers must have reached a peak of excellence! May 2Of21: Senior Play, Western Union, Please. STORY OF THE PLAY The story tells of Danny Daley, a droll dreamer with a passion for uniforms, and a lasting belief that he is going to run a shoestring into a million, if he can ever get the right shoestring. Years ago his wife gave him ten cents to go out and buy a loaf of bread and has never seen him since. His daughter, Alice, is sure he is alive and will come home with a fortune. But Jennie, his wife, has to sell their house, and to do it, she has Danny declared legally dead. Danny's Lodge is giving him a big Memorial service when a telegram arrives, saying that he is flying home to them. Alice, ecstatic, rushes to meet him at the airport. Jennie is trying to call off the services, when in walks Danny in a Western Union uniform. He is horrified when he learns that she has murdered him in cold blood, but he accepts the situation, tells her he will leave, and he sets off to his own funeral. However, before he goes, Danny tries to straighten out his wife's tangled realty affairs and to refroute his romantic daughter into the arms of the right boy. Danny is off to re-wed his widow as the last curtain falls. Two regulars were lost at midfyear, and it was necessary to build up a new team for the second semester. Medina won its first six games. Included in the wins were victories against its league rivals, New London and Wellington. The league is divided into a northern and southern half. Medina won the southern championship and Clearview, the northern. In the playfoff, Clearview def feated Medina. Five of eight letter men will be lost by graduation: Barnes, Bame, Gorfido, Elf liott, and Seeley. With Dick Higdon and Jerry jameyson to build around, Medina can look forward to an interesting season next year. FOOTBALL REPORT After a summer of hard work intended to toughen them for a strenuous foot- ball season, some forty boys spent a week at Camp Crag for intensive training. The ground work was laid here for the most successful football season in the history of Medina High School. The opening game with Fairview resulted in a 19 to 0 victory for Medina and started the team on a sevenfgame winning streak. The only defeat of the season was the game with Clearview. This event attracted state-wide interest because neither team had lost a game and Medina had not been scored on. The season's climax occurred in the Wadsworth game in which Medina def feated Wadsworth in the last thirty seconds of play. The game, played in a snow' storm, was a thriller from beginning to end.
