In Memoriam Sunset and evening star, And one clear call for me! And may there be no moaning of the bar When I put to sea. But such a tide as moving seems asleep. Too full for sound and foam, hen that which drew from out the boundless deep Turns again home. Twilight and evening bell, And after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell, When I embark ; For though from out our bourne of Time and Place The flood may bear me far, I hope to see my Pilot face to face When I have crossed the bar. Far, far beyond the shot and shell Where comrade, hero, patriot fell — Beyond the midnight, darkness black Through which he bore the wounded back, O’er periled way and shell-torn track, My sainted soldier sleeps. For, far beyond dread scenes of strife, Beyond this tortured mortal life Where smoke-dimmed sun and stars ne’er shine Where valor rent the battle-line, To reach that earthly goal, the Rhine, His sainted soul shall shine. — Netta F.
