On a Monday morning, when everyone begins the new week with increased vigor and enthusiasm, Medill received news that was most shocking to her. Oh, that fatal Monday! Like a thunderbolt did the news strike the faculty and the students. How incredible it was that Mr. Thoren was no more among the living. Upon entering into the hall one instantly noticed that something out of the ordinary had happened, something dreadful, and horrible. Instead of the hilarious chatter and healthful giggling of the girls, and the rough pugnacious voices of the boys, which usually ensues after a short absence from school, one saw something different. Numerous boys and girls were standing in groups with an unutterable sorrow and poignant grief expressed on their faces. The whole atmosphere seemed to be enveloped in grief and sorrow. Mr. Thoren died in the prime of his life. His death is, indeed, an inestimable loss for the faculty and the student body. Mr. Thoren has been in Medill for the last twelve years. He saw Medill in her most glorious and successful era and did not leave in her critical period. He sponsored and took part in numerous school enterprises. He always sought that order be kept in every school activity and it was his divine idea to gain glory for Medill. He was an indefatigable worker for the school and in spite of the fact that he was aElicted with a severe and serious illness he attended his duties with the most exceptional punctiliousness. This was because he loved the school sincerely. As to his character he possessed a most brilliant wit. His witticism will always be remembered by the students. He also possessed an exceptionally enjoyable and healthful sense of humor. It was his idea that a teacher should not only be a source of information but a true and intimate friend to the students. And such he was. With sincerity and devotion to the students and the faculty Mr. Thoren has erected a standing monument that will bear forever his revered memory in the hearts and souls of the students and faculty. :..7....- ..
