PROPHECY OF JUNE CLASS 1930 VIEW OF 1950 Brrrrrrrrrrrrr! ! ! The sharp ring of the bell pierced through the calm atmosphere of the apartment and caused us to start with wonder. Who could it be at this hour of the night? Opening the door we were accosted by a NVestern Union messenger who handed us a telepgram. Nervously, we tore the flap from the envelope. Our essay won first place! The cross country trip is ours! ! We start tomorrow! XVith keen interest and excitement, we began packing that night. The next morning, loaded with bags and baggage, We set out for the Union Depot where We were met by Al Waldfogel, editor-in-chief, and Anthony Antonelli, assistant editor of the Hearst papers, who bid us a pleasant trip. Arriving at Wfashington, D. C., our first stop, we were met by Louis Ross and Albert April, representatives of the Washington paper, by whom we were accompanied to one of the largest hotels in the city. The following evening a reception was held in our honor. Among the guests known to us were: Phil Wiesman, President of U. S., Ethel Levin, James Calucci, V.-Pres., Marie Barone, Joseph Scala, Lena Caparelli, James Hara, and Elsie Shapiro. The music was furnished by a girl's orchestra directed alternately by Anna Cohen and Olga Yatzuk. Our next stopping point was Minnesota. We had just enough time to witness a trial in one of the famous courts of the city. We recognized five of our Medill classmates, among whom were Sam Elovitz, judge, Isador Schultz, Prosecuting At- torney, Attorney for Defense, Matilda Glickman, Amedio Triscinzzi, foreman of the Jury, and Rose Tellerman, Court Stenographer. After riding through fields and prairies, we visited Hollywood, where we watched Nathan Kaptowsky direct a picture named Stars of Medill, written by Lucille DiBona. The cast consisted of Margaret Zeiger, leading lady, playing opposite Hugo Scala, Rose Harris, Fred Baranchic, Minnie Lerner, and Esther Glickman. This picture was an all talking, singing, and dancing picture. The music arrangement was led by Alice Belinsky and Henry April. The costumes were planned by Ida Hodes and Evelyn Hollander. On our return trip, we stopped off at Galveston, Texas, where we attended the opera production of Romeo and Juliet. Joseph Scalpone happened to be the manager of the opera house and furnished us with box seats. The part of Romeo was featured by Anthony Mazza, and Juliet was played by Marie Bonjornio. Other parts were taken by George Wanek, Theresa Izzo, William Levin, and Concetta Onesti. On our arrival to Chicago, after six months absence, we found that Medill had been replaced by a new High School bearing the same name. The principal was Joe Kadens, assistant principal, Anne Strongin, Deans, Concetta Procoppio and Lorraine Stella, Frank Pacucci, French and Italian instructor, and Araniss Cervantes, teacher of Spanish and Latin. The English department was headed by Anna Isaac, the Bookkeeping Depart- ment by Evelyn Baker, the Shorthand and Typing Department by Anne Ostrowski and Gertrude Levin. After all the greetings were over, we were informd that Anthony Serittelli had been elected mayor at a recent election, and had chosen Lillian Schnelling for his secretary. Page20
