Gxcels in 1948 During the Season of 1948 the Medicine Lodge Indians had the best football season that they have had for the last flve years. Their season's record was not outstanding but they continued to improve all through the year, and in spite of the fact that the majority of the team was made up of inexperienced men, they ended the season with four wins, four losses and one tie. The Indians' football squad will lose our two first team ends next year as Bruce Rickard and James Dickey both graduate. They will lose a good dependable center when they lose Harold Hosey. At the guards they will lose Emory Miller and Cary Henderson. They do not lose any tackles as all of their tackles were either sophomores or juniors. The men that they will lose out of the backfield are going to hurt the team but there should be some younger boys to take their places. Lucky Lilleqvist, the team captain will be lost by graduation and George Thomas, Delbert Summers, and Monte Baty are other seniors that saw action. In spite of the fact that the Indians are losing some of the Senior boys it is the hope of Coaches Ray Henry and Asst. Roy Jeffries that enough underclassmen are coming alon to fill the places of the spots that the Seniors have vacated. The following boys will return to the squad next fall and they should improve on the record that was made by the Indian Tribe of 1948: Leon Adams, Gene Aubley, Jack Axline, Bob Bishop, Jack Bowman, Edwin Carper, Bob Forsyth, Gaylord Gant, Jim Hudson, Bill Kasney, Burt McKinley, Doug McKinley, Dean Melkus, Ernest Radcliffe, Kenneth Rausch, Bill Reneau, Melvin Rinke, Bobby Robbins, Ryle Robinson, Don Shelite, Dean Stranathan, Joe Summers, Jack Vandeveer, Gary Whitaker, a group of freshman boys, and some of the other upperclassmen. For the second straight year the Indians have landed on top of the hemp. both times as undisputed champions of the S. K. L. basketball season. This year they rolled over all but one of the six teams, then got revenge on them in the second encounter. This year the Indians capitalized on the size of the team. They averaged well over six feet. The Indians started the season with several veterans at hand and from the start they were picked by many as the team to watch. Under the coaching of Roy Jeffries and Ray Henry and with the letterrnen, Bruce Rickard. B. H. Born, Harold Hosey. Bob Forsyth, Glen Ford, Dean Melkus, Lucky Lillieqvist. and Jim Hudson. the Indians cinched the Southern Kansas League after winning the first eight league games, after losing to Caldwell on the opening game of the season. Winning 16 of 17 games during the regular season, they were also champions of the Medicine Lodge Invitational Tournament when they beat out Pretty Prairie in the finals 38 to 33. They won non-league games with the tough Alva, Oklahoma, crew 35-27 and again 49-47. The Indians played one of their better games of the season when they whipped the highly-rated Wichita Cathedral squad 60-47. On March 9, the Indians entered the Regional Tournament at Pratt. The first game went to Medicine Lodge when they trimmed St. John 44-29. The Pratt Greenbacks and Indians tangled in the second round and the Indians eked out a one point victory 48-47. In the finals of the tournament. the Indians met Anthony, a league opponent whom they had beaten twice be- fore, and repeated the victories to take the Regional Tournament and an entry to the State play-off at Salina. With only sixteen Class A teams left after over one hundred started the journey to the State. the Indians were one of them to remain in the group for State honors. In the first round played off Medicine Lodge was eliminated by Wamego alter once leading them by nine points at the third quarter period. The final score was Wamego -ll. Medicine Lodge 37. Out of the first 12 boys, five seniors played the last basketball for Medicine Lodge High School this year. They are Bruce Rickard, Harold Hosey, Steve Wise, George Thomas and Lucky Lillieqvist. The seven remaining lettermen were B. H. Born, Bob Forsyth, Glen Ford, Dean Melkus, Jim Hudson, Gary Whitaker, and Jack Vandeveer. We hope there will be another S. K. L. crown for the Indians next year.
