Miss Jones has served us not only as a faithful teacher, but also as a class sponsor and a friend to all who needed her. It was only through her untiring effort and won- derful guidance that this publication has been possible. As our class leaves the halls of Medicine Lodge High School, we will always remember Miss Jones by her warm, friendly smile and her willingness to help anyone in trouble. Class History In the fall of 1935 forty-two little wide-eyed boys and girls left their parents to become members of the kindergarten class for one-half day under the guidance of Miss Evangeline Fullerton. Of these forty-two pupils, seven boys have gone all the way together-Terry Neal, Tonk Mills, Keith Warren, Ronnie Davis, Marion Main, Jim Moore, and Jerry Tharp. Ruth Hollar entered from Wichita two months after school had begun. Rosalie Guthrie also entered a short time after the opening of school. This year we presented our first dramatic feature. It was a Christmas pro- gram in which Jim Moore acted as Santa Claus. As our class entered the first grade, we found we had two classes, first grade east and first grade west, under the capable guidance of Miss Grace Hibbard and Miss Pauline Nossaman This year we lost four of our pupils and gained three. Phyllis Mullikin moved to the country, Bill I-Kuff moved to Sun City, Jean Sitler moved to Attica, and Norma Jean Brittain moved to Oregon. Mary Ann Reneau joined the group from Argonia, and Jean Fussell and Kenneth Angell from the country. Ken- neth didn't stay long, as he left the second semester. As time went on the class moved to the second grade with Miss Lois Miller as instructor. This year we gained one new pupil, Donald Guild, from Harper. As we moved into the third grade, we had gained three pupils, and girls at that. Jayne Harper joined us from Ohio, Gerry Rinke from Sharon, and Juanita Ragan from Walstead school. Our teachers this year were Miss Betty Jones and Miss Dorothy Parsons. This year we presented a play, Hansel and Gretel, which had always been presented by the third grade. Again this year Jim Moore acted as Santa Claus in our Christmas program. Nine o'clock Monday morning, Sep- tember 3, 1939, found all the little children meeting their new teachers and their lit- tle friends. Our scene shifts to the fourth grade room under Miss Bertha Achelpohl's CLASS HISTORY CContlnuedj instruction. One new face appeared among the group, Carol Donovan from the country. Another bright face seen before but lost was Norma Brittain who had re- turned from Oregon. Eleanor Snyder started and Gerry Rinke was missing this year. Since the class was large Csee we had trouble in grade school tool, it was di- vided and ten children went to the mixed room under Miss Olive Walker. This was the year for the operetta, Adventures of Tom Sawyer, in which our class partici- pated. Miss Ruby Ross, Mr. Charles Lamp- kins and Mr. Jack Coleman brought us through the fifth grade successfully. We were in Miss Ross's room and Mr. Cole- man's mixed room. This year we gained Wallace Jones, who was later to shine in football, and Bill Huff who was later to shine. The Peace Treaty of 1941 was pre- sented this fall, and everyone was ex- cited. The girls were either prairie flow- ers or flag dancers, and most of the boys were in the Scouts. The operetta which was made successful only by the participa- tion of the fifth grade was Sunny of Sunnyside. The same three teachers took us through the sixth grade, only we moved to Mr. Lampkins' room and to the other side of Mr. Coleman's room. We supplied Santa Claus for the Christmas program this year. Can you guess? None other than Donnie Guild. Gerry Rinke, who liked variety, returned this year. The new face in this class turned out to be that of Virginia Blackwell from Kinsley. At last junior high school! We were big shots now! Marian Fenwick from Hill City decided to try us out and liked us so well she stayed. Harriette Randolph joined the journey toward diplomas, also right in there punching, we found Harold Moore and Don Webb. Norma Brittain and Mary Ann Reneau just couldn't stay any longer, so they left only to return. The middle of the year brought Corinne Miller from Hazelton. Don Stranathan, who was one of the class stars in athletics, came to us from Kiowa. Gerry Rinke decided to take a va- cation from M. L. H. S. by leaving and going back to Sharon. Howard Schnelle al- so became a little weary so he left and re- tumed to the country. Carol Donovan evi- dently liked country school for she also left us. This year we were under the able di- rection of many teachers, Mr. Herr, Mr. Kindig, Mr. Miller, Mr. Vest, Miss Brown, Miss Zeller, Miss Zenor, and Miss Bales. This year we were represented in athletics, for several of our boys were on the junior high basketball team. Another shortie to return to the crowd was Jean Sitler who became editor of the annual her senior year. Ivan Watkins was also listed as a new eighth grader. Carol Donovan decided we just couldn't get along without her so she returned, very glad to be back. We received another mid- semester member who was Pat Smith from Hoisington. Under the instruction of H. C. Van Voorhis, Bruce Kindig, Percy Miller, Fenton Vest, Bernice Bales, Lois Hull, Maxine Melka and Eunice Jones, we came through junior high with flying colors. This year the junior high basketball team boasting Terry Neal, Don Guild, Don Stranathan, Ronnie Davis, Bill Huff, Jim Moore, Marion Main and Keith Warren, 10 won fifteen games and lost three. We pre- pared this year for high school where we would really shine. We entered high school as freshmen, having the largest class ever to enroll in M. L. H. S. Several new students joined our class this year-Barbara Balding, Don Bowman, Patty Bottorff, Patty Groen- dycke, Mollie Harbaugh, Betty Hellman, Janna McEndree, Otie Miller, Catherine Roots, Boyd Strickland, Delton Winters, Dale Thomas, Bill Wheat, and Lowell Baty. Norma Brittain left us at the beginning of the second semester to enroll in the Ottawa school. This year we elected Terry Neal presi- dent to lead the class, Patty Bottorff, vice presidentg and Jean Sitler, secretary-treas- urer. We really felt quite grown-up this year as we attended our first formal dance. Getting to wear formals and have dates was quite a thrill. At the beginning of our sophomore year the class seemed to like the way Terry Neal handled things the year before so they re-elected him presidentg Don Webb, vice presidentg and Janna McEndree, secretary- treasurer. Norma Brittain cou1dn't stay away from us, as she returned again to finish with us. Beverly Wheelock from Hardtner, Don Coberly, and Leonard Brock joined us while Lowell Baty returned to Missouri. Our junior year brought many events. This year we presented our junior play, It's Papa Who Pays, a three-act comedy. This play had the largest attendance on record. We also presented our junior-senior banquet, Main Street, which was lots of hard work but also a lot of fun. The deco- rations included a model town with the main street of Medicine Lodge built in miniature form. The whole banquet turned out to be a great success. This year our class boasted the queen crowned at the carnival. Corinne Miller was the celebrity. Four new students joined the class this year-Pat Malone, Gerry Rinke, Willard, Talbert, and Lowell Baty returning from Missouri. Our class officers this year were Jim Moore, president: Don Stranathan, vice presidentg and Jayne Harper, secretary- treasurer. Our senior year was our final mile to go before diplomas were handed to us and we were on our own. At class meetings the boys and girls just couldn't get together in making their decisions. When selecting our class colors, flowers and robes the boys suggested black and blue for the colors, the cactus for the flower, and red robes with greeen hats and yellow tassels. They wanted to be different. We finally got around this, though and selected the red rose for the flower, royal blue gowns, and blue and silver as our class colors. This year was also the celebration of the Indian Peace Treaty. This was a very big event, and really wou1dn't have gone over at all if it hadn't been for the seniors. Corinne Miller was selected by the football boys to be football Queen of 1947-48. Our class officers this year were Ron- nie Davis, presidentg Leonard Brock, vice presidentg and Tonk Mills, secretary- treasurer. The first great undertaking that they tried was their junior play, , tr' W The Strange House. The play was said Cby the juniors! to have been one of the best ever given in M. L. H. S. A Another of their main activities of the year was the selling of refreshments at X 'XNQX football and basketball games. The money taken in from this was used to present N the Junior-Senior Banquet, an event that all had awaited from their freshman year. The junior class of 47-48 was well represented in athletics and music, and took active part in all other activities. At last it's here! To the freshman class of 1947-48 this was the most important year of their lives, the year they entered high school. The first week or two the forty-seven freshmen became rather discouraged with all the initiations. Initiations were fun, but the newcomers often wondered why the upper classmen had to take their spite out on the lowly little freshmen. His athletic abilities are not confined to basketball, however, he is also a tough football letter-man. Another member of the first five is Terry Neal, who goes in fighting and comes out smiling, win or lose. When trouble comes round our man Neal is right on the spot, cool, calm, and collected. FDR hasn't anything on Terry, he has also served three terms as presidentg freshman and sopho- more classes and student council. B. H. Born is the player we really have to look up to, both in ability and height. B. H., our youngest member, a sophomore, usually manages to sink the most baskets, but of course the ball is already six and a half feet in the air before it ever leaves Kil- roy's hands. Muscle-bound, speed demon, dead-eye Don Guild is the third senior member of the big five. His position is guard, and if his hands don't stop the ball his feet do. Even a broken foot cannot keep him out of basketball. The lone junior of the team is Bruce Rickard, forward. He is always ready with a fighting spirit to capture the rebounds hot from the backboard. This big broad bomb-shell not only rates on the basketball court, but also on the gridiron. 34 Q! Coach Keith Oliver, graduate of Wichita University, did a very commendable job of coaching as he built with three regulars from last year's squad and some younger talent a team that was smooth and powerful from start to finish. Also the local basketeers coped first place in the Medicine Lodge Invitational Tournament with three wins. Don Guild and Don Stranathan, those two senior guards who were fast and plenty hard to holdg Ter- ry Neal, smooth-playing forward who always turned in a good game, B. H.
