OUR NEW SCHOOL SUPERIN TEN DEN T Our School District, Medicine Hat No. 76, has always been front-runners in education. The students, parents and teachers of Medicine Hat School District No. 76 have been fortunate in our leaders - a dedicated School Board and a well-educated, hard-working and an extremely conscientious group of administrators, Dr. H. Storlien, as Assistant Superintendent, was one of our first-rate admin- istratorsg and his elevation to the highest rung of our educational administrative ladder can only mean our educational system will reach even higher heights. Dr. H. Storlien Superintendent MedicineHal School District No. 76 Enclosed is the letter which all teachers in our school system received which outlines Dr. Storlien's expectations as our new Superintendent of Schools: MEDICINE HAT ScHooL DISTRICT No. 76 mnsn 601 - lst Avenue SW., Medicine Hat, Alberta TTA 4Y7 Telephone: 14031526-1323 January llth, 1988 A Letter to All Staff Members of the Medicine Hat School District No. 76 from Harold T. Storlien Dear Staff Member: I consider it a privilege and an honour to have been selected by the Board of Trustees of the Medicine Hat School District No. 76 to serve as its Superintendent of Schools and Chief Executive Officer of the Board, upon the retirement of our present Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Ken Sauer. I see a tremendous challenge before me as I assume the superintendency position from Dr. Sauer who has provided exemplary leadership to our school system for fourteen years. lt is a pleasure to have worked closely with Dr. Sauer for the past eleven years. I hold great respect for him, and I know he will be a tough act to follow. However, I am confident, and the Board of Trustees has confidence in me, that I will provide strong leadership for our excellent school system. 160

NEW SUPERIN TEN DENT OF SCHOOLS During the next six months l will be actively talking with many of you, individually and in groups. l want to have the opportunity to explain and clarify my goals and priorities, plus gain a broader insight into the expectations, the desires, and the needs of the many groups and individuals in our system. This information will be utilized as l establish my own plan of action for 1988-89 and as the system formulates the next five year educational plan. As the Superintendent of Schools my priorities will be: 1. To work with the Board, the staff, the students, the parents, and the public to provide a strong educational program for all our students. 2. To enhance the already strong working relationships that exist between the Board, the administration, the staff, the students, the parents, and the public. lt is through teamwork that we will achieve our goals. 3. To promote openness, through communication, within our system and between our system and other organizations. ll. To continue to evaluate the components of our system to recognize the strengths and, at the same time, acknowledge and work on the areas that need strengthening. 5. To enhance public confidence in our educational system. lt is only through continued public support for our educational system that we will have the resources to achieve our goals. ln essence l want our school system to maintain the great many positive features that blend together to form the system culture of which we are so proud and, further, to grow in the areas which need strengthening. You are a member of a very strong group of people who serve the students and parents in this school system. It is my belief that the strength of a school system is in a direct relationship with the strength and commitment of its staff. Consequently l feel very confident about the present state of our system and its future. My commitment to you is that l will work with you in an open, honest manner, respecting you as a person and valuing your positive contributions to our school system. May l express my wishes to you for a Happy New Year, and l look forward to working with you in my new role. Sincerely, X ,' f f - f ' X X fl-larold T. Storlien Superintendent-Designate HTS!llb
