EXCHANGE TUDE T GERMANY Alberta - Germany Exchange 1987-1988 Our fourth year of involvement in this exchange brought us three Bavarian girls who were fascinated by the prairie that we sometimes find dull and tiresome. They could not believe that the Canadian prairie was as cold as everyone had promised them since they were able to enjoy one of the driest and warmest winters on record. Daniela Hechtel had a passion for the most unlikely 'tourist attractions' - grain elevators and license plates. She came from Buchloe, a hilly area called the Allgau near Munich, and found our flat, open, empty spaces pleasing and even exciting. Her partner, Holly Metz, hosted Daniela from late August to the end of November and stayed in Germany with Daniela from the beginning of April until the beginning of July. Miriam Kramer was Suzanne Visser's partner. Her home is a suburb of Munich and like Daniela, she enjoyed her stay here on the prairie very much, making many friends whom she will remember and who will always remember her for her cheerful, pleasant nature. Cathrin Christoph loved the prairie because she could ride for hours without paying the sort of riding fees that she was used to paying in Germany. Rachel Abrahamson, has an uncle who owns horses and the situation seemed to be designed especially for Cathrin. History, politics and horses were Cathrin's passions, and her stay here allowed her to exercise them all. Cathrin opted to take two Social Studies courses in the same semester during her stay at our school. As in previous years, the exchange students, both German and Albertan, learned not only about each other's language and culture, but also about themselves and how to cope with new and unusual circum- stances. We thank the German girls for the contribution they made during their stay to our school, and we hope that they continue the friendships begun with this exchange. That is certainly the opinion of this year's participants. Brian Wrigley, our M.H.H. S. student, met his partner, Sylvain Bergeron, from Jonquiere in September of 1987. Our students feel that French is a more difficult language than English, but Sylvain had quite the opposite opinion. He gained confidence working in the practical environment of a grocery store. English began to be an effective means of communication for Sylvain towards the mid-point of his three-month stay. At that time, many people, teachers and peers, noticed a dramatic change in him - a change reflected in his creative activities as well. His art work showed impressive development. Just when he was really enjoying himself, it was time to return to Quebec. Brian Wrigley had his turn to plunge into a new culture and language in early February and stayed with Sylvainls family until mid-May. He, too, had his opportunity to work in a grocery store, but we do not know if his art work impoved dramatically. Dr. Beresh received Brianls Quebec report card and was pleased to discover that it was excellent in every respect. Sylvain Bergeron fQuebecj Brian Wrigley KA lbertaj 140 With such results, small wonder that these partners will maintain that their exchange was indeed 'un succes fou'!
