v F G i I The CADUCEAN opens. Our trail stretches ahead.. We look backward and see the winding road that has brought us here. - We look forward toward a limitless future waiting just around the bend. Gratefully we remember those who first tread Medical College's path. V M They established her traditions and blazed the trail for us. . Humbly we pickup our packs and walk purposefully onward. There is much that still must be done, and the trail is beckoning. l ' bf -, V ,. --:rcs , +,.x, - s P' xx QA-vig ' H X., Q ?vf.- , .i 4- - -I , ye. Dr. William Weston III Pediatric Staff on Rounds Dr. Fredrick W. Kinard, a native of Leesville, South Carolina, following undergraduate preparation at Clem- son University and some graduate study at the Univer- sity of Chicago, joined the faculty of the Medical Col- lege of South Carolina' as an Assistant in Chemistry. After three years in this position, he went to the Uni- versity of Virginia as Research Fellow and Instructor in Biochemistry. Obtaining the Ph.D. degree at Vir- ginia, he returned to the Medical College of South Carolina as an Instructor in Physiology. During the in- tervening period he has successively held the various positions which culminated in a professorship in Phys- iology. Through leaves of absence, he undertook fur- ther graduate study in the Universities of Chicago and Michigan and completed work for the MD. degree at the University of Tennessee. When a graduate program was instituted at the Medi- cal College of South Carolina in 1949, Dr. Kinard be- came Chairman of the Committee on Graduate Studies. In 1965, all graduate endeavors were incorporated in a formal organization, the School of Graduate Studies, with Dr. Kinard as Dean. The graduate division, in seventeen years, has pro- vided an opportunity for 23 students to receive the Ph.D. degree and 37 to obtain the M.S. degree. Enrollment in the School of Graduate Studies is steadily increasing with students currently studying in the departments of Anatomy, Chemistry, Microbiology, Pathology, Phar- macology and Physiology. When more research funds and laboratory space become available, and as the fac- ulty is enlarged, activity in the graduate area doubtless will increase. Dr. F. XV. Kinard Demi, Sflmof of Grfzrffnzfe Sffnfiwt The School of Graduate Studies Dr. W. H. Golod Dean, School of Pharfmzcy In September, 1950, William Hersh Golod entered Fordham University graduating with a B.S. in Phar- macy. In August, 1954, he entered St. Louis College of Pharmacy and Science receiving his M.S. degree in August, 1955. From September, 1955 until june of 1958 he at- tended Purdue University receiving his Ph.D. with a specialty in Physical Pharmacy. In August, 1958, Dr. Golod joined the faculty of the School of Pharmacy at the Medical College of South Carolina as an Assistant Professor. He was promoted to Associate Professor of Pharmacy in july, 1963, and in September of that same year assumed the duties of As- sistant Dean. With the retirement of Dr. William A. Prout, Dr. Golod was appointed Dean of the School of Pharmacy by the Board of Trustees in 1965. The School Of Pharmacy Facult Now We will have some mental gymnastics 1. She holds a B.S. Degree in Public Health Nursing from Peabody College for Teachers, Nashville, Tennessee and a M.A. Degree from Teachers College, Columbia University, New York City. Her background includes supervision in Nursing Service and in teaching and administration. As a member of the Emory University School of Nursing Faculty for twelve years, she was head of the Department of Medical-Sur- gical Nursing. She was Director of the Piedmont Hos- pital School of Nursing from 1963-1965. She has been a member of the National League for Nursing since its inception and has held numerous state offices. She is a member of the Sigma Theta Tau National Honor Society in Nursing. Much of Miss Mills experience in collegiate nursing has included the critical study of the Nature of Professional Nursing and various research ex- plorations in the development of designs which might yield data toward the possible development of a theory of Clinical Nursing. Miss Mills is currently directing the establishment of the Baccalaureate Program for the School of Nursing at the Medical College of South Carolina. Actually, the event was not new even in 1934, because, prior to this an annual event of two weeks duration was held for discussion of postgraduate material in various fields of medicine. Then, as now, the event was not restricted to the students of medicine but open to para-medical per- sonnel and even the lay public. Although, shortened from two weeks to two days, this annual, traditional, even historic event has not reduced the offerings for advanced medical education and enlightment. Like the first, 32 years ago, the most advanced techniques are offered, now in medicine, nurs- ing and pharmacology with rewarding information to all through the notable contributors that are invited' from throughout the world each year. Though coverage is limited by space only this year, we take the same pride and appreciation that existed over thirty years ago in the event honoring the founders of the Medical College. Through their inspiration and the continued efforts of those responsible individuals, Founder's Day will continue to be a remembered educational, as well as social and fellowship event as we pursue our respective careers in medicine. The School of Nursing is the scene of a challenging presentation to today's nurses by Miss Virginia Henderson Dr. L. F. This Caducean marks a new venture in the history of the Medical College. It is a first-time merging of the various schools in an effort to assemble a yearbook. Its conception was erratic and slow for there was neither previous staff nor format. Even so, it had the hearty aproval of the admin- istration and a reassuring promise of their support. The 1967 Caclureafz is completed but its success lies not in its genesis, rather in the determination of succeeding years to carry out its traditions. The goal of a yearbook is far more than a finished product-though assuredly it may be the only visible memo- ries of these school years. However, into each annual goes many hours of creative endeavor and invaluable associations with others. Ideally the spirit of an annual is that of a fraternity scrapbook-everyone joins in adding a small portion to the whole. Since so much time is required by school work, it is necessary for the succeeding Cadzzcemzy to strive to meet this goal. The editors wish to forward this request-that everyone take an active interest in the per- petuation of forthcoming yearbooks, each contributing small but excellent jobs to its preparation.
