Yife are always raring to go. Our classes range from nine in the morning to seven at night, but by this time we have learned to sleep any time or any place, even if it is in a straight chair in class. We have most of our classes such as chemistry, anatomy, microbiology and Nursing Arts our first two years. Our last year we are faced with the grave problems of Pro- fessional Adjustments ll. Our services are usuall narrowed down to Obstetrics, Isolation, and the Ein-.ir V ...si gency Room. We have gi lot of charge duty from which we gain a lot ot experience. A member of our class is the president of the student body, editor of the .innual and l'd like to say that for the last three years a member of our class has been Miss Roper. Fortunately, even with all our work, classes, and school activities we can .ilxxxiys find time for a grime of tennis or a movie, even if it is early in the A. M., but we loved every minute of it. EDUCATION AND PROGRESS Education, if it is to stay alive, must have a frontier. It cannot stand stillg it must go forward or regress. For it to go forward there must be those willing to venture ahead of general practice, ex- ploring, and charting the course. 'lt 'lt 'lt There needs to be constant challenge, bold thinking, critical study, pointed discussion, and trial in practice of new ideas. -Hollis L. Coswell, President, Teachers College, Columbia University. The School of Nursing of the Medical College has one main frontier-to prepare nurses to care for the sick in an ever-changing medical world. Needs and demands for nurses many times exceed the supply, for nurses have proved themselves as trained to take orders, poised and skilled in emergency and sympathetic with those who have problems. A few years ago there were few industrial nurses, few nurses in doctors' offices and few military nurses. The big field was private duty where kindly bedside care could be afforded by the patient. The nurse always liked this field for she had time to know and care completely for her patient. Demands for detailed records have taken the nurse away from the bedside, multitudes of diagnostic tests with clerical necessities have claimed hours formerly spent with the patient. Medical research has brought changes in procedures so rapidly that it is hard to keep students informed of the most recently acceptable methods. Right at this point the need for trained leadership becomes a nursing need and the School of Nursing is looking ahead to determining the best procedure to follow. In reviewing the school history we take courage for changes and progress have been made. Roper Hospital Training School for Nurses was organized in 1883. In 1916, the Board of Commissioners or the Roper Hospital, feeling that the instruction of the nurses would be more adequately conducted if the Training School were incorporated with the Medical College, proposed to the Trustees of the Col- lege that such affiliation be effected. In 1919, the school became the School of Nursing of the Medical College of South Carolina. Roper Hospital grew to a four hundred fifty bed hospital and remained the area for clinical service and experience until September, 1955, when the Medical College opened its four hundred sixty-five bed hospital to referral patients for the purpose of teaching, service and research. Stu- dents now receive experience in both hospitals. The school has increased in the past ten years from an average of ninety-five students to an average of one hundred sixty. The School of Nursing Building now under construction by the Medical College will open during the summer of 1956. The ground floor is especially constructed for the teaching of bedside nursing though the sciences will continue to be taught in the laboratories of the Medical College. The first floor will be largely a reception and recreational area for students. There is, however, a small recep- tion area set apart for the use of the Alumnae Association. The second, third and fourth floors are stu- dent quarters. Each four students will have a suite consisting of two bedrooms with an adjoining bath- room. On each floor, a lounge room with a kitchenette and a launderette will permit recreation and care of personal laundry. The entire building is planned to be a home for student nurses where gracious liv- ing and character development will be encouraged during the three years of basic learning of nursing skills. In looking to the future the school will be associated with the community through affiliation with Roper Hospital. Experience at the Medical College Hospital will bring wider fields for understanding of cases referred for study and treatment by the Medical College faculty. Demands for trained leaders in nursing have brought serious consideration of the strengthening of collegiate nursing in the State. To this end, the Medical College is ready to seek funds and to shoulder its responsibility as needs and demands become clear. Ruth Chamberlin, Dean School of Nursing Thirty-One N I! AMS A, These Our Seniors - - - After Eleuenff 1 ': ff! ffs -,N X QW X X , 7lvf7jl'f.j'-,1'I1'0 SOLICITUDE One Friday on Calvary, as in a hospital ward Three men lay dying-among them our Lord. 'Twas the worse case of neglect that was ever recorded These patients W'hose pain Pilate had ordered. On three hard beds in the shape of a cross Withotit pillow or blanket, no nurse would endorse. Now the One in the Center our attention should claim, jesus of Nazareth, the chart gave His Name, A cardiac condition examiners' find- Excessive love for the whole of mankind. Now you who are nurses, just listen to this: Unsterilized nails pierced His Feet and His Wrist, And what about this for cruel medication? Vinegar and gall was His Lips' 'leviation. His back men wounded by blows and welts, Yet no soothing ointment relieved the hurts, No cold compress was applied to His Eyes, The world's greatest lover just hangs there and dies. Not a grain of morphine, not a tourniquet set, As Mary's Son slowly bleeds to death. The chart then concluded, as further we see, 'The sad Man from Nazareth died about three'. His loved ones mournfully went their way- His Mother, Magdalen, and john so they say. Now don't blame the jews for this frightful neglect, Our sins did it all, our sins do it yet. This treatment of Christ demands reparation, It falls to you Nurses of this generation. Whenever you see anyone in pain just make believe it is Calvary again, And do for the patient what you wish they had done For the Man in the center-The Innocent One. It will thrill his Angels, it will please him, too, just keep at it girls, 'til life's work is through, And when after death your soul mounts on High God will 'cap' you again in His name in the sky, And on judgment Day when heaven you will win, Because nursing your patient you really nursed HIMV Rev. At the be- ginning of the second year we receive our first black band for our capsg with this comes added responsibility. Operating Room, Pediatrics, and Isolation are our main services. and we find ourselves working night duty for the first time. Three months of this year are spent at State Hospital on Psychiatric Affiliation. Between our irregular working hours and classes we still find time for recreation. Some prefer tennis, while others work on the Social Committee ro help plan informal dances. The newspaper offers another project for the juniors. Another year passes with new services, new classes, new supervisors and new stu- dents, but each new experience is looked forward to with pride and expectation as we begin to feel a real part of the world of nursing. It is nice to be probies no longer. At last we have the cap which we have strived long and hard for and which we wear with pride and dignity. As we advance, we learn the limits of our abilites. During our freshman year we spend most of our time working on the Medical and Surgical wards. On the wards there is so much for us to learn and then we realize our nursing training has just begun. Each day we share our experiences with our classmates and oh, what experiences some of us have! A great deal of our time is spent in classes. A few of our many classes are Nursing Arts II, Medicine, Surgery, and O.R. technique. This year we enjoy to the fullest those extra privileges we receive. We become members of the student body and participate in all student activities. At this time we begin to realize that we have many responsibilities and standards to uphold at all times. The freshman year becomes a very memorable year of work and much, much fun. ffrllfjf-if'Il'U Connie Baxley Amelia Burke Mary Dell Cowley Frances Ann Deans Betty Dimery Lena ,Io Dishman Carolyn Dixon Edith Dority Patricia Drawdy Eunice Driggers Martha Dukes Juanita Haltiwanger Frances Jordan Mary Ann Keiffer Ann Kirven Elizabeth Lee Evelyn Leonard Mary Donna Mackey Sylvia Moore ,lean McMillan Farty-Tlnreic Baynarfie Platt Ethel Plyler Carolyn Rodgers Priscilla Shuler Gertrude Siliivant Vernelle Spell Carolyn Stone Marie Stucke Ann Tate Catherine Tieclemann Marque Van Ness Marie Ward Gail Wfatkins Miriam Weathers Barbara Vf'illiams I we fs an f ...,i..
