Signed, Lilyonne Peterkin PHUPHEEY june IU, 1965, dawned bright and clear as it always does on auspicious occa- sions, and Charleston buzzed with the promise of new excitement. It was Alumnae Homecoming Day, and the class of '55 was arriving in all its former fury. I closed the pet shop for the day and went down to meet the train, won- dering how I could ever explain that I had been reduced to caring for sick cats, when all my classmates had reach- ed successful heights. I had a lot to learn that day. At the station I first spied Rachel Davis lBrittonj, and soon found out she was assistant football coach at Ran- towles. Well, itls been said that every team needs a nurse. 'We traveled on to- gether down the ramp and met Capt. Evelyn Cate, head of the Army Nurse Corps, who had just returned from a meeting with the President of the Uni- ted States, Joyce Trescott. to discuss sending aid to the missionary service in China, headed by said Easter Har- ri.s who still likes to knit argyle socks. We hopped into an Army limousine and headed out toward The Citadel to pick up Bobbie Breiver, who is chief phychi- atrie nurse there, and Margaret Dini- eru, who teaches urologv at the Medi- cal College when not at her regular iob as representative of Dorothy Dix at The Citadel. VVhile in the neighborhood, we stop- ped at a grammar school where Connie Muelenlnerg is school nurse. We heard that she has established a fine program. In the school we met Lily Breilialin lYarnelll who was collecting the two charming children for whom she does private duty. Wle whizzed to Haleyls for lunch lwe were making money at lastl, and whom should we bump into but Miriam CDIUVHS, Miss America of 1964, and the two ruimers-up Frances Powell llflzipplc fol and Mary Ann Townsend. They were tull ot news: Had we heard that Caro- lyn Hegister was the new housemother at the AKK house? We had, indeed, and in addition had they heard that lilvelyn Moore was making all the dress- es the girls wear to the fraternity par- ties? After lunch we rode to the old cam- pus to look around. XVe found jo Ann Gray was head nurse on Colored Pedi- atrics, and Clauclia Hunter, pediatric instructor. It was said that she is very strict on the students but has heen known to entertain the patients with choruses of Honey Love. In the Medi- cal College Teaching Hospital we found Mary S. Elvington supervisor of the Colored Obstetric VV ard, though she still canlt distinguish between medi- cal students and residents. We heard that Tolnnzy Catlin was a clinical in- structor, but had the strange habit of giving her lectures over the phone. This we got confidentially from the telephone operator Tlielina Collins. She had recently been to Columbia and reported that our girls were keeping the town alive. Dessie Sliealy is a fa- mous movie star and is now making a personal appearance at Laurel Hill in Columbia. Beverly Sims lVanelerlJiltl is in charge of the State Hospital. She met her husband while on a cruise on his great-nephew's vacht. Also in Columbia was Caroline Slzaiv who married the governor of South Carolina and is queen of Columbia society, entertaining such dignitaries as Mr. and Mrs. Hofl Mott lPat ll7ccl:.sl ancl lXladame Lilyanne Pcterlfin, ambassadress to Nassau. Etlicl M. Boniface had recently changed planes in Columbia en route to Paris where her husband is head of the Frencli Foreign Legion. By that time it was getting late, so we went to the hotel to dress for the Alumnae banquet. BV a strange twist , x 'ly-ciglif of fate, Myrtle Ann Benton and Hope Childress were down the hall. They were both doing private duty, with heart cases a specialty. The clack of a typewriter disturbed our merrymaking, and investigation revealed Maryeclith Davis at work on a novel entitled The Life and Loves of Lucile Floyd, from 1963-1964 using as references recent newspapers and magazine articles. At that moment, in walked Marlene Hen- son, wearing one of the uniforms that made her famous in the designing world. VVith it, she wore some smart duty shoes designed by Frances Phillips. At last, banquet time arrived and we were seated around a long, lavishly decorated table. Mistress of ceremonies was Ruth Houser, chief nurse aboard a Dutch Liner who gave a disertation on cocktail glasses dipped in sugar and lemon juice. She brought us a message from Pat Iefforrls CFoxj who is now operating room supervisor at a 1500 bed hospital in the Belgian Congo. Eye- ing the delicious feast, Barbara Ches- lek was reminded of the time she burn- ed a chicken dinner when she had to run outside to give first aid to Margar- et Cannon who had had a collision with Elwancla Davis who was driving wildly down the street on her bicycle in a hur- ry to get to a rehearsal for a show for the overseas theater of which she is chairman. We had a greeting from Mary Sires, national BSU director and nurse-con- sultant to the Mary Ann Cone Orphan- age. The evenings events were covered by Barbara Donnelly, reporter for the New York Times. As she stated, A good time was had by allf, but several people were caught looking at their former classmates with that 'iHasn,t-she-gotten- fat?v look in their eyes. just wait till the 1980 reunionl Bye till then. Molly Segall Cliosenfielflj forty-nine Class Histor On September Sth, 1952, 19 bright- eyed, anxious little girls filed into Main Home, all a bit shy and reserved, but filled with anticipation of things to come. By night fall everyone had at least met everyone else and a few of us could actually remember names, but most of us did well to remember those of Olll' roommates and Big Sister. The Big Sister-Little Sister Party was a big success, we lost some of our re- served feelings and really enjoyed the party. How rapidly the days flew by! How weid strut before the mirror in our pre- clinical uniforms! Happy day-after what seemed end- less studying and work-the day of cap- ping arrived. Wfhat a feeling of accomp- lishment we shared as we proudly dis- til played our caps and bibs on the wards the next morning. Along with this great event came another pleasant happening-the second section of our class arrived and soon we were all one big happy family. The months seemed to go rapidly, and soon it was a year-our first stripe! The months took their toll of our classmates, and though they are no longer with us, we often think of them. Soon another year was gone and with it came the second black stripe-seniors! Now we are ready for graduation. Soon each of us will embark upon our own chosen field of our chosen profes- sion, but you may be sure that whatever we do or wherever we go, Weill never forget our classmates, teachers, or Dear Ole, Alma Mater! -me--,P my SHETEH UF THE SIIHUUL UF UHSI E B ILUI G Our dream coming true! The new Nurses, Building is now under construc- tion and will he completed within a year. It will contain offices and class- rooms on the first floor and will have separate entrances for guests and business associates. Each four students will share suites-one Whole bath- room to each four students! A launderette and kitchenette will be available on each floor. We are all anxiously awaiting its completion. Dur- ing the past planting season, more than enough pine seedlings were planted on Company lands and given to individual landowners to replace every tree cut for pulpwood and used by the Company's Charleston Mill. We are actually replacing every tree cut and manufactured by us into use- ful paper and chemical by-products, with a living, growing pine seedling to take its place.
