On September 4, 1951, fifty young ladies, excited with the idea of becoming a nurse, gathered together at Main Nurses Home. Oh, yes, each of us felt a little scared as we looked at the many books, the schedule of classes, and the confident upperclassmen. There have been many times when we wanted to throw up our hands in despair and go home to sympathetic, understanding parents. How happy we are today that we remained! Probie days were quite a struggle for some of us and yet now they seem to have been our happiest days of training. It was fun pretending to be the patient in learn- ing nursing procedures, and how proud we were to learn that we could actually make a bed with a patient in it. Endless it seems were the hours we spent in the nursing arts lab practicing these procedures only to discover You havent practiced enough! Happy was the day when we were allowed to descend upon the wards and get supervised on the many procedures we had learned! Classes and daily quizs faced us, so we observed the study hall every week night. Finally after sweating through the many practicals and theoretical exams the big day arrived. In january of 1952 we were capped. Bursting with pride we walked on the wards with our caps placed precariously on our heads. We felt as if we were wheels and that we finally belonged to the student body. Ward duties brought many new tasks and emlrarrassments as well as the many smiles and tears. Probably the most embarrassing thing to all of us was the inability to distinguish between residents, Big Chiefs , and interns. Our self-confidence was shattered to pieces when we discovered that we had asked the chief to start an I. V. How completely opposite, however, was the feeling we had within when a patient smiled and said, Thank you, nurse, after having received a tedious and painful treatment. Medications confronted us at this time, also. You might hear, Have you been assigned to I. M.'s yet? and the reply, Yes, you should see the list of them on colored surgery, but they're easy, you just- on and on it would go. Gradually we began to feel somewhat at home on the wards. The first year passed quickly, and we soon discovered something new had been added to our old and familiar blue and white -our first black band. Now we were well on the way, and how time did fly' We had fewer classes than before, but there was still much to learn as we went from service to service. Each of us being on a dif- ferent one, it seemed that we rarely saw our classmates, but there were still the ole' get togethers in which we discussed our new experiences and problems. Vacation time ap- peared and we surely welcomed it. Along about the end, we were eager to return and get back to work. Another year behind us meant another black band on our white caps. It was a wonderful though frightening feeling to accept the responsibility of being a senior. Dur- ing our senior year we were given the privilege of having Miss Chamberlin iron out the wrinkles and present us with a stepping stone to a more professional life in P. A. II. Affiliation at State for three months soon rolled around and we went in groups of ten and twelve-our first real class separation. All enjoyed State and returned to Roper better volleyball players and dancers. Many pleasant formal dances, square dances, and parties have passed our way dur- ing our role as student nurses. Our thoughts now are in the very near future on gradua- tion and commencement. To which field of nursing will we turn? With this feeling of uncertainty, we are somewhat hesitant as we approach the threshold of becoming a graduate. Many tears will fall as we depart from our friends, classmates, and dear ole' Roper. Yet, 'tis an undescribable feeling to know we have reached our goal. Would we do it all over again? Yes! Many times, yes! JANELLE LESTER. Page Tufeizly-Fiz'e anioz Qfass. Lstofz Section 4 History books are filled with great events, but one of the most important happen- ings in the lives of fourteen young women didn't even create a ripple in the fast current of history making functions. On February 11, 1952, they embarked on a three year adventure that would make them mature, professional women. The first six months were filled with cries of Isn't nursing wonderful? , I'm going home , and Golly, I gave my first so and so today. Time was filled with study, especially of Nursing Arts and Anatomy and all the other studies so necessary to us. Then june 6--the first milestone-was reached and successfully passed. All four- teen received those white caps so dear to every nurse. The freshman year was filled with the realization that we were well on our way to becoming nurses. To relate our experiences the only place to begin is Nursing Arts. Here we learned the fundamentals of nursing which we would add to many other courses and much experience. We had classes galore and practice hours that seemed like eternity. Then there were the times we had to get up an hour early to open the lab. On that morning we always thought and they wonder why we sleep in class. Before long we were going on the wards where we put into practice all the knowl- ege we had so recently acquired and we were plenty scared. Even now we can easily remember that first day, but assignments that seemed impossible soon became daily rou- tine. The patients were soon our friends and it was a joy to smile a cheerful good morning and get the same greeting in return. juniors! A stripe! Had we really been here a year? Those were the thoughts on everyone's mind about the day of February 11, 1953. Our first year and only one had left our ranks. Everyone settled down to more serious studying and even a little more play. With our stripe came more responsibility which would give us a better insight into nursing. We began our special services and someone was always saying How's the O. R.? or How ya like Peter Rabbits? You would probably hear I can't thread sutures fast enough or I wish somebody would invent an automatic diaper changer. A year and two stripes later we were Seniors and again we lost only one. And boy! What two black bands can do for a piece of muslin. Now we felt like we were going somewhere and we did! . . . To State Hospital in Columbia for three months affiliation. Man, what a life and how different from our hospital! Not only that, but we had the privilege to meet atnd know students from all over the state. We hope we learned something and we know we had a good time. Before long we will be exchanging our senior stripes for the distinctive cap Roper graduates so proudly wear and, also, that shiny piece of yellow metal that pins each of us a nurse. We cannot begin to express our feelings about the past three years. They have been full of excitement, gaiety, much study, hard work, and'many, many good times. To sum it up in two very familiar phrases we could say, ' Its been real and It was the most, to say the least. by MYRA WHATLEY AND PEGGY KIRKLEY Page Twenty-S ix VIRGINIA CARR BLOUNT Orangeburg, S. Food was of first consideration and was obtained from Srmzllr Grocery Store and MrKl1'eer1'.r Food Store. llf you don't believe me, look in the phone book., Paper plates, napkins, and the like came from Mrr:z1'g0111e1',1i-lrlnrznl, For seasoning they took the salt and pepper Sellerr. only they called them Lilly and Pat. Flavoring was hardly necessary for this group is not rllrrrrey about its food. They took Rogerf silver, thinking sterling a little too elegant for a picnic. XVith a Cook engaged, the food, ceased to be a problem. For entertainment, by luck a great actress was in tcwnfflllimrz herself. To design the setting for such an artist, they called on Tlwrmzrrmz the Contractor who would only work in stated hours to avoid union troubles with Lezvir. Miss Kirlalefy told ,how she had trouble with the union workers too while installing Koehler plumbing in her new home. She is sure it would rake the wisdom of Srrlw1mrz.r to stay in good Odor with union labor. The weather was forecast by Lnrlezzioml to be cool, so the girls wore their Harrir tweed suits. They especially featured Greene and Brozwz, The only one worried about her hair was Miss Mrflllmrrey. Transportation was no problem. Miss Hmlger drove her Plzrlmrz which she keeps at 1VIlfrlwn1'r Garage. Miss Sproff drove her little car of English design+a Morrir. You can Parker anywhere. For additional cars, the girls called on the W. T. Srllilh Company and borrowed those best car buys to take the rest of the class. The party started over the Cooper River Bridge. Their attention was captured by a. beautful I-Ierzrorz flying leisurely along, though Miss Merrie insisted it was a Drnlae. Miss Varrzer said, ll lmtley do next? Look like a stork? Oh! Oh! where is Dr. HJl'I'L'l.f!7ll.! Miss Zell reminds the driver in a Blom!! manner that he'd better watch the Hill in the bridge or someone would get hurt. Miss Rerrkerz said, You know, we are going the wrong way. It is the Ashley bridge that leads to the Cuttinos. On the way home, Miss Qzfimz, the class accountant, declared a dividend from the picnic fund and Miss Sfarrzer suggested sending it to ferrerrrr Orphanage, such remem- brance being in line with fVIr1lflveu',r teachings. She said there were a lot of sick chil- dren there who needed the healing gift of Luke the Great Physician, especially one crip- pled child who needed an appliance from Floydk Brace Shop. Miss flflmrrer thought they'd better go by Broelielr Pharmacy and get some Coflorl to pad the brace. Before the party broke up, Miss Kirmrrl proposed a reunion each year Leiter class- mates forget her. With 100 percent agreement as usual the party broke up with happy recollections of three years together. I have had a wonderful visit with Virginia Blonnt, my former room- mate. She is now a supervisor here at Roper. I had a grand tour of the Medical College Teaching Hospital directed by Mary A1171 Tlvo111a.rro1i, who is assistant to Miss Chamberlin now. She took me to see the ex- cellent nursing arts department that is headed by Helen Sproft assisted by Myra W'haI- ley. Patty Sefllerr, and Beryl Qizinn. While touring the operating room with Haziilia. Partfer, the supervisor, we ran into Mary Neal Cook and Margaret Luke who are clini- cal instructors in their respective home towns. They are keeping up wfith all of the latest techniques at our great medical center. Also, we saw jean Starling Odor who is private scrub nurse for one of the surgeons here. Among the private duty nurses we saw Carolyn Mo11lgo111ery, Helen Rogerv, and Berry Brodie. It's evening now and our much talking has left us rather weary, so Virginia and I decide to settle down for an evening of television. fanelle Letter, now president of the American Nursing Association, is telecasting a speech from Western Reserve Univer- sity where she is on the administrative staff. Oh, here she is now beginning to speak. She is telling us of the rapid advances of nursing in the last ten years. Suddenly flashed upon the screen is an advertisement of Brucks uniforms. Do my eyes deceive me, or is this Barbara Cooper, Anne Greene, jane Sellerf and Ginger Hearon gracefully modeling these uniforms? The whole thing is directed by Shirley MrKlzfeen. Wliat a thrill! The scene changes and we find ourselves at Sea Island, Georgia, where Clair Zell has a beautiful home. There on the beach we see several children. Racing down the sand chasing a darling, sturdy, little blonde boy is jane Lorkzvood. Now wcnder who she married? Out on the surf we see Doty Renfeen at perfect ease on her water skies. Wfatching from the beach is Lee Koehler and janef Morrii. They are talking to Beffy LKYEIIIHIIIIW, who is seated by a lovely dark hakired little girl that greatly resembles one of Charlestons former tennis stars. These old married folks seem to be having a good time. Betty says she heard from jane Cotton and that she anid Betty Wa1'd are working up in Illinois. I should have known those two would not be afraid to buck the whole of Yankeeland. The picture fades and what's this? An army base ?' Yes, and here leading a group of army nurses in calisthentics is none other than Lt. Barbara Bl'01l1'l7, counting in a loud, lusty voice. Struggling with the hatted exercises are Toinnza Hatton, Deilorer Ki- narll, and Peggy Kirkley. Over to the side are two stragglers whispering about the party at the non-commissioned officers club tonight. It's Doris Small and Barlaara Hz1I'l'6l.l'0lZ. Directing another group is Lt. Bizena Floyd. Suddenly the scene changes and the beautiful s.ights of old New Orleans come into view. Roper graduates have somehow always been intrigued by this historic old city, and even now I see a group in front of the hospital. It's Charlotte Mizfrlazini carrying on a spirited conversation with Doi Szniilv and Lzify Soloniony, whose husbands are doc- tors there now. Oh! I hear a familiar giggle that could belong to only one-yes, there is Size Drake sipping a coke with Miriam Varner. As I strain to hear their conversa- tion, I hear one of them say they received a letter from Dottie Matflaewf who is work- ing out in Texas now, and she had seen Riilay Mrflibaney and Ann Lezuit returning from an exciting trip to Mexico. They also saw Sara Srarnei who was out at Baylor on a speaking engagement, telling of her great work and travel among the Baptist mission fields. She said on her way to South America the nurse on the ship was none other than Libby jenkins, and while in South America she saw Alive Hill who is married to a wealthy oil dealer there. Recently Libby had as passenger on the ship Sloirvley Moorer, who was travelling as a nurse companio-n to an old, hypertensive senator and his wife. Now, we are back among the familiar scenes of good old South Carolina. There is jerri Melts' doing public health nursing up around Branchville and also Virginia H oil get and Virginia Minrey who are working for local physicians here in Charleston. Page Fifty 1 1 1 il l il Suddenly I jumped and sat up excitedly in the chair. I looked at Virginia, who seemed totally disinterested. A local newscast was droning into the silence of the room --Janelle was gone. I asked Virginia if she had seen all that I had seen. She looked at me suspicious- ly and didnt answer. It seemed incredible to her when I told her of my amazing ap- partition. She still says I dreamed it, but I'm sure I was given a special psfychiic power with this marvelous experience in order that I might pen this prophecy of our great class of '54, By BETTY ALLISON.
