P gggbggg . iltoll all - eninr lass Our late President Lynch asked why I was in a Brown study. I said I was Craven a new Nurses home. I-Ie said things cost Moore all the time and the Register was empty. Neverthe- less he said submit a plan. I looked for a Hilley spot so we wouldn't have Brooks in the base- ment, after all this is to be no Marino resort. We don't want to have to put up a Bailey bridge to get the girls out. Finally I located a spot near President Street for the girls' Garrison. Now I had to Hunt tor architects to show me how to design the home. First I called on Inabinet 8- Nor- ton Incorporated. They had read so many detective stories by Conan Doyle from Britton they made the place look like a prison. I said I ain't Gunter have that. So I called in a new com- pany, Williamson 81 Williamson Incorporated, hoping they d do better-The susSpence was ter- rible as I waited to see if they would Foster sound ideas-I tried to show them the Way students should live. That seemed like the Faris thing to do. Next I began looking tor a good Cook to help design the kitchens. I was directed over several Rhodes to Kitty Kelly but she was out with her Baughman. I-Ier mother said she's tried to Breaker of that fellow but she insisted on going with the boy to the Woodard of their place. I did not Terry for the mother was in a f-Eurey. On the way back I met my friend Lloyd. We stopped at the interior decorators, Lawson 8. Blanton. They were having a fight and we were greeted with a terrific Salvo. In all my goings and Cummings I've never heard such rasping voices. We wondered it they were real people or me- chanical Roberts IRobotsD a June one and a Joan one. We decided not to go in there for they might Lamis. We started on and had a blowout so I called Ellis Vulcanizing 84 Tire Co. While waiting I looked across the street and saw a sign, the one and only Madame Romanosky the sooth Sayer- I strolled in and asked what chances we had of ever getting a nurses home - She looked in her crystal ball and said I only see a new type of double decker bed for your stu- dents, it is called a Lachicotte. It hangs from the ceiling. I became completely paranoid and concluded all was against me - Dr. Bryant came along and calmed me down - Just then I remembered St. Matthews advice A to love your enemies. So I became calm and concluded what I needed was faith. However, it any of you marry a millionaire don't forget to build us a new nurses home and cut down on your income taxes. BY Ruth Chamberlin, R. History of ection, 151111 As we look bock now it seems like only ci short time ogo thot we first met Roper ond the life of o student nurse. On September 6, 1949 fifty-nine eciger to leqrn young lcidies stood in !ine qt Moin Home woiting to be ossigned to their rooms ond roommcites. Settled out lost in our new home, ecich of us felt oi little scored when we looked upon the schedule of clcisses which hod been qrrqnged by Miss Wqllcice ond Miss Seciwright, our Nursing Arts instructors. Everyone wos interested in our welfqre, so we observed Study Holl every week night ond reqlly studied-once we looked into the mony books thot hcid been bestowed upn us. Yes we did worry, some cried --ci few decided to reioin their fomilies but the moiority of us outlived the nome probie ond were copped in Joinuory 1950. Oh, hcippy doy-when we got up thirty minutes eorlier to get into thot bib ond cop. Now, we decided, we're reolly on the woy. I Word duties proved to be quiet tedious but the locid wos forgotten when oi smile crossed the foce of o comforted potient. One of the greciter tosks wois distinction between mediccil stu- dents, interns, cind the Big Chiefs . It wos quiet embcirrossing when we found ourselves cisk- ing o resident to stczrt on I. V. The first yeor possed quickly ond we soon discovered thot something new hod been cidded to our blues ond whites -Our first block bond. We were ci proud lot, but sod cat the thought of losing ci few of our clossmqtes. Clqsses continued ond so did we-going to the vqrious services such cis Ob, Operoting Room, ond Pediqtrics-which did we love most? One big problem wqs the full moon thot never cecised to put Ob in oi smcill up- Roe Cwhot ci queenl. ln the O. R. Keep your eye on the bouncing boil seemed to be the by- word. VVhot ore you doing now? Suture plecise, wcis o close second. Time flew on, ond we lecirned especicilly in the E. R. during sewing circle periods. September 1951, we become Seniors ond there oppeqred qnother block bond on our little white cop . Yes it did look pretty cind felt wonderful, olthough ci little frightening being o se- nior cind reolizing the responsibility odded to our prestige. Affilicition ot Stote Hospitol for three months soon cipproqched ond we went in groups of six ond eight. Eoch group toking ci porticulor interest in psycho-somotic therqpy ond thrilling to the experiences of the group before us ond the group thot would follow us. All of us returned to Roper with o much-improved donc- ing cibility. Mqny very pleoscint dqnces, squcire donces, weiner roosts, ond beoch pcirties hcive possecl our woy in the post two yecirs. Now come the time when the Seniors were honored with ci de- lightful boot ride given by the Alumnoe Associqtion. As we kept in close contoct with the col- endcir we recilized thot our third ond finol yecir wqs coming to ci speedy end. June ond grcid- ucition time wos soon to come ond much excitement with it. lt wcis hord to believe thot we hod reqched the end of our gocil. Teors combined with ioy filled eoch of us os we morched down the oisle of the Citodel Chqpel on the qfternoon of June 5, 195. Would we do it qgoin?--A big YES from cill of us, olthough we've hcid our hcirdships, we've cilso hcicl our hqppy times, ond they won't be forgotten ecisily- Yes it wcis reol. How hard iT was for us To realize we could acTually make a bed wiTh a paTienT in iT wiThouT Throwing him on The floor. There were so many laughs and Tears ThaT summer, as well as The resT of The Time, buT more so Then as iT was all so new and exciTing. My, buT we were an ingenuous liTTle bunch, sweaTing Through pracTicals and rushing To be The firsT To geT supervised on Them on The ward. ThaT June, we received our caps which made all The difference in The world. We felT as big as any graduaTe fairly bursTing our buTTons-yeT no one hardly noriced which disappoinTed us for we did noT know ThaT This was such a common occurrence around The hospiTal. Oh, buT The Thrills, fun and learning came fasT and full of The lasT of ThaT year. The maiorifv of The summer was spenT aT The beach, playing canasTa and sTill working hard and sTeady. No- vember of ThaT year, T950 found we 5, having losT 2 members, on vacaTion aT home. My how wonderful! BUT we were ready and willing To come back for The nursing had Taken hold and real- ly inTeresTed us. ShorTly afTer The beginning of The new year we were presenTed wiTh a black band which decoraTed our caps and endeared Them To our hearTs. We had survived a year! My how Time flew, we were going To differenT placces - IsolaTion, PediaTrics, OperaTing Room, scarcely seeing one anoTher now buT always ready To Talk of our experiences and lisTen To oThers. VacaTion was in July of This year and we were so happy To have a summer one. The resT of The year was very similar To The lasT sTill full of exciTemenT, discouraging Times, parTies, friends, crushes , boy friends, hen parTies, and saTisfacTions. We losT anoTher member That year which dwindled our number To 4. This lasT year has been very busy wiTh geTTing ready for graduaTion and affiliaTion aT sTaTe. We feel a liTTle surge of doubT as we approach The Threshold of becoming a graduate nurse. The ThoughT can'T help buT haunT us-do we know whaT we should do? Maybe iT is good To feel like This. And yeT, iT is wiTh relucTance ThaT we close The door on These sTudenT days noT because of our ignorance, buT because we regreT leaving our many friends, grown so much dearer because of ur many associafions TogeTher wiTh sickness and hearTache. Never shall we forgeT These IasT few years, iTs evenTs, The many people we have known professionally and personally and all The fun of being a AsTudenT nurse aT Roper. A Q. . ,, . , . . , , ., . , , , M' 'y ' t r . . . - , i I 'fi , I S Prnphecg Dear Hach: Well, Florence Nightingale had nothing on us. Last month, June 1957, marked 5 years since the day we graduated from 'Ole Roper, and somethin' really, memorable happened to me. Been too confused to write earlier-I was sitting on the floor-playing with Lea Frank, Jr. Cthat's my son, by the wayi when horrible whooping and yelling brought me to the door in a flash-just like the good ole days. The door flew open and there stood a few of our very professional looking classmates-and in the khaki uniform of the U. S. Army. They sounded off and marched into the living room-Maior Lawson, Captain Breaker, First Lieutenants Craven, Math- thews, Sayer, and Ellis. Through all the babble and noise a thin thread of the patterns of conversation reached my confused brain and started arranging itself into some semblance of order. Through the hours and over many cups of coffee and a trayful of cigarettes, the following tales unraveled-After enlisting, the girls were all thrown together in the same camp for basic. After those hectic months, they were given a I4 day leave and IO days for the trip to new headquarters in California. They decided to visit the high spots of these United States before hitting any faraway horizons, Miami was the first stop. Sun-bathing on the beach, they saw Joan Roberts who'd been working there since graduation-Morried?? Oh No-still the same Joan. They rented a car and toured the state, then planning to see a few OT The OTheVS Who had Settled There. Lakeland, Nancy Bryant still lives there only she was too busy planning her wedding to talk much. She did tip them off to Nan Register's whereabouts. They found her in St. Pete Cruising around in a Cadillac and catching up on a little last minute shopping before picking up her millionaire husband. Amazing, huh? At Clearwater Beach they found Joyce Rhodes and Ginger Woodard fstill career QIFIS-only now they're superviSOrSl vacationing. From there the girls struck out for New Orleans. At Charity Hospital they finally found Wondo WIIIIOFUSOH, MOle Fgrlgl end Pet Remenggky, Bgyl gre they hgving a terrific time in the hot town . Not tired of it yet. After really laying a coat of red on the town, they headed TOY Texas. lh CIOWhTOWh Houston, They Stopped O fine-looking blond and ask for directions. Looking again they recognized Emily Salvo-She's been living there years now-Ever since her husband was discharged from the Navy-They had dinner together and discovered that Eleanor Baughman was in Texas, too. Her husband is stationed at Fort Bliss. They didn't have time to make any more stops though. Their leave was shot. SO they hopped O plone Ohd heoded Tor the New bose. Everything moved fast from then on. They found themselves on a ship headed for Korea. Over there, they found conditions in sad shape. In 8 months time, though Lawson with her capable staff of nurses had per- formed a minor miracle. All that scrubbing at Roper mUST have COfT1e Ih hohdy- Of COUrSe the girls had it all over Florence Nightingale with their knowledge of sciehCe, the miracle drugs, blood and sion. Nevertheless, the going was rough and to hear the story, Korea might easily have many years ago. They'd been there a year when they were sent home somewhere in Washington state. Another leave-50 daySI about way. In Michigan where Lloyd was working private duty again. It was a nicer trip back So they decided to come backto plasma transfu- been the Crimea and they landed S. C. in a round with her husband they learned that Mattie Belle Spence was working in Alaska, of all places. Alas, up around the Great Lakes they learned that Faustina Cum- mings and Lois Britton were working as nurses at a swanky summer resort. At Akron, Ohio, there was June Roberts busily setting up a clinic with two doctors. June told them that Frances Doyle was nurse at the Point infirmary where her husband was teaching. I learned that Maryland got two of our able-bodied grad- uates-Gracie with Herbie and Hunt, supervisor at Johns Hopkins, and of course you know Louise Brown is settled now: Westly and Junior in N. C. was surprised to learn that Mary Jane Brooks was working in the Sur- gical Department where Dr. Mobley is taking a surgical residency, Helen, you should have seen their faces when they finally got back to the girls that were true to dear 'ole South Carolina. Peggy Foster is permanently attached to Lancaster now. I believe you know her 'ole stomping, ground. Talk about success. Eleanor Lachicotte has her own hospital at Pawley's Island. Gee, did you ever imagine us spreading out so-success goes that way though, I guess. Guess what, Joyce lnabinet is in Orangeburg learning more about Dentistry every day from Billy. By the way I saw her a few months ago and she seemed so happy. She told me that Marilyn Garrison was in Anderson now, very happy also. Betty Gunter's working at Greenwood Hospital on the Medical ward-Surprised? I'm not. And back to Dear 'ole Charleston by Summerville where they dropped in on Kathryn Kelly fSimmonsi and they have two darling children. The only two besides me left in Charleston right now are Barbara Marino work- ing on colored surgery and Joyce Hilley Simmons with her family. I guess that's about it, Hach, and I'm sure ready for a little class reunion when everybody settles down again. Really, Seneca's not too far for a weekend-why don't you come down real soon? Would we have oodles to talk over? Hope to hear from you real Soon, I l I I I I I I I As ever, Betty Lamis lLawandalesi T!tii'fy-Six -weammr Mi 3. ' ' t' M ., . .,., - V - 'X -I . F, ' 4 ts. To Betty Lamis, my roonlmate, thanks a million for the many times she pinch-hitted when the girls assigned were too busy. You did a swell job. Besides that, she handled the business like a professional. To Betty Gunter, hats off for everything. That's just what she did anything I asked her and believe me it was plenty. To Peggy Foster, a plus for her swell job of getting the pictures taken. Quite a job eh, Peg? To Joyce Inabinet, Betty Lamis Qagainj, Maria Rousakis, June Green, Betty Potter, Betty Sholk, and Loretta Robinson, compliments for the wonderful job of selling ads. To Betty Faris, thanks again for typing up all the material. I miss the noliok-olickn now. Without these people, this book would be impossible. I can never thank you girls enough.
