'gr SEPTEMBER CLASS HISTORY As the last few months of our training school period draws nearer, we want to look back to those first, exciting days-do you remember??? V lt was a clear, sunny day Sept. 9, 1946 as we wandered in 50 strong from different states and towns to be enrolled into training school and start our profession. As we entered main home, a mass of bag and baggage, we were pleasantly greeted by Miss Andell, and ushered to our assigned rooms by Mrs. Hussy. The time passed swiftly with unpacking and meeting new friends, but as the night came on, most of us longed for home-or any place where we could get away from those queer odors. Everything was new and just one look at our Anatomy books drove two of our new friends back home. On our second day, we all rose very early, eager to get going and be a nurse. Only-it wasn't as easy as that! We were up 30 minutes too early, and would have to learn to sleep a bit longer. Vxfithin the next two days, we were enrolled in class, and observing study hall every night from 8 till 9:30. One day we were taken to visit all the wards in the old Hospital. How many of us wanted to go back home that day? lt was a great thrill, though, and we couldn't wait to begin working up there, and actually putting into practice the proiedures our beloved Miss Thorpe had taught us so well in Nursing Arts. When we finally got up to working on the wards, we were a proud class! Everyone was talking about the patients they'd seen, and the work theyd done. Miss Thorpe was equally as proud of us and that really made us glow. Months passed, and during these, we were taking courses and exams, and working on the various departments for a few hours a day. Someone had told us we were a badly behaved class, but we couldn't see their point at all. We were young tmost of us were just out of high schoolj and got a lot of enjoyment out of the harmless, little things we did. What was so wrong with Nell Buchannon having a Barber shop during study hall and giving Bobby Cartera crew cut ? Not to mention the vice-versa! Why did one or two short showers between 9 and 9:30 P. M. cause so much commotion? Sure, we were supposed to be studing, but if we waited until 9:30, we'd have had to go to bed without-After all, 2 showers don't go far with a floor full of girls. Before we could realize it, it was October, and we were to have a big Halloween party. We planned our costumes with great anticipation, and finally the evening arrived. What, does someone want a date? Sure, who? A Citadel Cadet? A-h-h-h These words were heard all over Main home, and we decided that at last the Citadel had discovered usl! Everyone primped, added artificial freckles etc., and went to the party. Sure enough, we were discovered, for there in all their Military beauty were about l5 cadets just roaming around. More funl Remember how they loved those short costumes?- :md how so many went minus their company letters and class numbers? Oh, did we learn fast! After the party excitement, we got back down to work until December when we got excited again over a short vacation. Few of us had been home more than once since September. lt would be grand, but why couldn't we all get Christmas day. We took what we could get though, and went home for Christmas. Those of us who were already back by Christmas day, enjoyed our first Christmas on duty. january finally rolled around, and though we had been bad sometimes, they still liked us, and had decided to bless us with a cap. On january 24, l947, we marched to Baruch Auditorium with stars in our eyes and hope in our hearts. The next day at breakfast, and on duty we were a happy crowd of giggling girls. Life rode along smoothly for us now. We were finally well adjusted to our new life and had been accepted in the school. Our first big jolt came when we learned that we were to lose Miss Thorpe, our Nursing Arts Instructor, and friend, but soon Miss Margeurite Foster took over and got us back in line. forty M V -- -.-..... ..-. ...... parm' I .-thll1fmwaMw'wr'wuut'wi-fw.0, s::..'-wswzw-1'ut ar- .nity,-w.:1si:5g1frix- m'vpi-rum' ' .. After vacation, we received our first black stripe. Yes, September found us well on the road toward being a nurse. We were working 48 hours a week, and having a bright social life going to Citadel hop, Medical balls, and all our student parties and dances. By this time our class had cut consider- ably and instead of being known as the largest class since the end of World War ll, we were only average. Cur ward duties were much more interesting and we were to be found on such services as Obs., Gyn., Ped., O. R., etc. Can anyone forget the day someone sent Dorothy Sistrunk to the operating room to borrow 2 Fallopin tubes??? We had a lot of fun this year, however, for we began to have beach parties every week. Now we were concentrating on medical students and specializing in trying to understand them, even talking shop on parties was fun with them, and we learned as much there as in some classes! Remember how mad Tess Welcker would get because she'd ask Pop Watson and then we'd ask him to let us use his house? Vacation time again, and in Mid-winter! lan. and Feb., found us going home again with no old Crowd to see. HW' hy couldn't we have a summer vacation ? We'd ask, Maybe lune and luly . With approach of Sept., l948, we received our second black stripe. Now we were nearing the last lap, and the time was flying faster and faster. Soon we were organizing student government and elect- ing our annual staff. The Tres Anni was new, and only 3 had been published, but we were striving to make it better each time. The early fall of l948 we lost Miss Andell, our directress since probie days. She had a serious eye operation, and the work took a great deal of eye strain, so she resigned. Miss Chamberlin, before our Educational director, took over, and we found her very capable-more and more we'd see R. C. on our bulletin board. With our final classes coming and going, and camprehensives drawing nearer, we looked forward more and more to graduation. Our class now consisted of 26 members. We were still a very young and perhaps crazy class, but still loved our days at Roper. Some of us had found our futures at the Citadel CNo, they hadn't lost us yetl and in Med. school or Pharmacy school, but in all our hearts, training still stood out and our desire to be a Graduate Registered Nurse. With these last months to look forward to and enjoy, we cannot help but realize how much our 3 years here in training school have meant to us. lf we can remember all the goodness we've learned and the great philosophy for living we've been taught, perhaps we will be a class that will not fail-one that Roper may be as proud of as we are of her. Martha l. Plexico forty-one PROPI-IECY - SEPT. 1949 Theres the postman with a huge package! Can that be for me? The return address is: Miriam Ragan in New York City, N. Y. and the postmark is Sept. l959. lt's been quite some time since I last heard from her! lt isn't a package-it seems to be a very large letter. Why, she's still traveling around! Last l heard, she was in France buying more clothes, and now she's back home in New York. She's even been all over the U. S. in her new helicopter looking up our old classmates of the class of l949 at Roper. No wonder it's such a large letter! l'll just have to take time off from my domestic duties to read this. Now let me see: Norma 'Welcker is settled in Augusta, Ga., and is at last married to Pop Watson. She isn't working for she has a 24 hour job taking care of Snap , Crackle , and Pop , lr. Now aren't those some nicknames for three big, husky boys? l met most of the girls back at Roper. Mary Penney is Directress of Nursing now, and is doing a good job of keeping the girls in line. She has two or three degrees and Sam too! Frances Donato is married to Mac and holds the position of Supervisor of Colored Obs. Paula Foster couldn't get that cute Citadel Boy to leave Charleston, so she took over Gyn. l was quite :surprised to find Ethel Lachicotte on lsolation! She always did hate to work at night, so she took over and gets off at l P. M. every day. 'VV hen l toured Colored Ped., l wasn't shocked to find Polly Webster as head nurse-and, yes, still single. You knew she was in the Navy almost 5 yrs? Brownie Leavy was on White Ped., but is moving up your way tGreenvilleD next month. She's decided to go back to that Doctor again. Rosemary Ward was at Roper also. She's Supervisor of 5th floor New Roper, and has gained a little weight these ten years. lcouldn't find out what happened to her Billy, but l imagine she's still waiting on him to stop being so stubborn. Ch well, men are just like that l've learned. Eloise Hutchinson is still around Charleston. She married her linx but l hear it's going well. She is head of the Citadel Infirmary and doesn't work too hard. Frankie Medlin is doing research work on a new virus at the New Medical College lab, and hasn't been sick a day yet. She was at Duke a while but decided to come back to Charleston. l saw Alma Wilkinson in Spartanburg of course, she's Mrs. Turner now since she married Hugh right after graduation. Both of their twins are in school now, and Pug certainly is proud. Greenville, S. C.-as you know-had adopted most of our class. Mot Sutcliffe followed her heart up there shortly after we graduated and is still working at G'ville General as Operating room super- visor. Can't say what happened to her heart! Doris Dalton is doing private duty there now between her trips. She married that nice hometown boy from Greenwood, S. C. a few years ago, and is expecting a new addition to her family. I met Kathleen Mislielly at Sak's when l went down to do some shopping. She's modeling every- thing from hats to shoes all over Fifth Avenue, and has an offer for a movie contract. She's quite worried about how her freckles will show up on the screen though. l was shocked to learn that she wasn't married until she told me she was still looking for a man who could Rhumba. Marjorie Gault is also Modeling. She models white bathing suits exclusively in Miami, Fla, and, did you know her husband lucky Chuck is coaching football there? Monk Henderson is over in California and is Directress of Nursing in a small hospital in Santa Barbara. l hear she has the happiest school of Nursing in existance. What girl wouldn't be happy forty-two -. ........ .,... l ' u , . LQ:--w-'u'fhhni.nwl-eww' .f:hnm..-umm. 'ww w n t r,,,q-lgxhiqi,--.-'.'11q4 . LL .wus ml ,I in-lr with a l2MN leave every night or overnight pass any time? Her old Med. school beau has finally become famous through his experiments in Atomic Energy and they're to be married this Christmas. lane Ford and Olivia Henderson have been traveling lately too. The last l heard, they were working here and there and taking a slow, round the world trip. They've done so well that they plan to build a lU story hospital in Moncks Corner. Lucille Antwine, now Mrs. Bob, is a housewife and still a sleepy head. They have to set 4 alarm clocks at half hour intervals to get up on time each A. M. l toured the University of S. C. when I went through Columbia and wasn't at all surprised to find Mary Louise Campbell at the top of their nursing school. She was the first student to graduate from their school, remember? Rubelle Howard and Iane Murray are still together. They're doing Public Health Nursing and are opening a new well baby clinic for the Indians in Washington state. Can you picture Sue McAlhaney an Army Major? Yes, I saw her in Oregon just before she left for China. She has been doing very well, and likes military life. She said she had her eye on a cute Lienutenant but couldn't ever get to talk to him because he was so scared of her. While down in Florida, I also ran into Virginia Moore. She's in the Navy Nurse Corp in Pensacola and still following her Ioe around. She said they'd been together the whole time and traveled ex- tensively. The biggest blow I encountered during my traveling was when I stopped at a resort I-Iotel in New Orleans. Seems as though Delores Schrage and Clara Waring got on a auizz program and won a lot of money. They've opened this resort place and keep it running all year. Guess this includes all the old girls. It certainly was grand to know what they were doing since our last days at Roper. Of course, most of them married, or soon will be, but didn't everyone say we were a cute and determined class? How nice it was of Miriam to send me all the news of the girls. Guess that she too will be getting married soon to that millionare doctor. Oh! my cake is burned to a crisp Cas usuall and l'm far behind in my house cleaning, but just to go back to training days was worth it all. Besides, these days we can always open a can! M. Plexico forty-three A Y YQRTI' w , '11, , Hun Q' IANUARY CLASS HISTORY Ianuary 27, l947, what a day! Yes what a day-Charleston greeted us with sunshine but how would the Roper family react to its thirty-three new members. Well, we were all here, complete with bag, baggage and wide eyes, open mouths, question marks, exclamation points! We were greeted at the door of Main Home by Miss l-lussy who showed us our rooms and then escorted us to see Miss Chamberlin. Exactly what member of this family did she represent? Where did she acquire that tactful manner of questioning? Perhaps through experience?! Anyway she made us feel much more at ease. The following few weeks were really a hustle, new friends, big sisters, chapel, books, classes, uniforms- W'ould we ever achieve that professional look? Then Nursing Arts and Miss Foster, you must learn to improvise! Our tour of the hospital, quizzes and study hour, oh and rules and rules! My this was some place! Qur first day on the ward was most indelibly marked in our memory. We saw our big sisters when they turned their heads with a gleam in their eye and a smile on their lips as we walked past them with our tray, well equipped for dusting that bed assigned to us. Yes, we labored over that bed for a whole hour and proudly stood by for inspection. Where did she find that dust? I couldn't have missed it , but no excuses were in order. This was nursing, we'd just been initiated. Somehow we labored through those probie months, then capping! Our Roper family was pretty wonderful to us that night--the drop-in at Annex A, big sister gift and hearty congratulations. We were really proud that we had been accepted as Full-Fledged family members. After capping, time began to fly, the summer with Frequent Trips to nearby Folly and lsle of Palms. Fall with that new class, now they had to stop calling us probies ! More classes! Hal-o-ween with its traditional party, weren't those costumes a scream!! Then vacation at last! Home sweet home. What happened to that month? Before we knew it we were back at work. Our first Christmas at Roper was quite an experience, all those decoratiois, gifts, and then Christmas morning and caroling. With the new year, came our first black band. 'We were almost as proud of it as of our caps. Now we began to feel what real work was! April carried away one of our classmates on a psychiatry affiliation. My that must have been quite a place. Come lune, vacation again. luly saw two more members off to Md. on that psychiatric affiliation - lust what does that place have? Certainly has one patient who knows how to pull hair! Fall this year was a rather sad season for then we lost our friend Miss Andell who resigned as Director of Nurses. Our friend and Educational Director, Miss Chamberlin, took over this new title and greeted another new class! My but we were old! Our classes were fewer now but we weren't spilling tears over that! Christmas again and it's traditional celebration. lanuary! Our second black band, a few more classes to go and a few more months, then face to face with those dreaded comprehensives. lune! and graduation! After that will be a matter of marking time. Now we're only ten strong, somewhere along the line the rest decided Mom's apron string was just a little too tight so they reached into their pocket, pulled out their bandage scissors and gave a final whack. Yes, being a member of the Roper Family has been quite an experience. We have been faced with life and death and we have learned to serve others. Departing from our friends and companions will be sad but we will know that at last we have achieved a goal and now we must make that goal complete by becoming a useful citizen and member of society. You see, my steers have taken up quite a bit ot my time lately especially since Curley , one ot my favorites, developed pink eye . I-Ie's almost well now and luckily none ot the others caught it. Guess it was that good nursing care and isolation technique I learned at Boper, eh? Guess who came down to visit me last week-end? Gilda and Gene. Things certainly worked out befruitilly tor them. They're living in Columbia now and Gene just received a new promotion in his work. Gilda said she sees Frances quite often. Kendall has now set up his practice in Columbia and seems to be quite successful. Idon't doubt that tho, with such a good looking red head tor moral sup- port! W It was quite a surprise to hear that Anna was an air-line hostess. Inever knew she even thought of that but then you never knew what was going on in that blonde head oi hers. Bet she's giving thoso pilots a hard time! Speaking oi services, I hear Maryagnes has been quite successful in her Naval Career. What title does she hold now? I can't keep up with those promotions. Even while in school her heart was always with the Navy. Too, old Norma just couldn't stay away from Ohio. Bet nursing wasn't all that attracted her to Yankeeland. I know she's in heaven with her supervisory position in the O. B.--and Bay!! Had a letter from Sophia the other day.
