AI- though we are enjoying our senior year we find ourselves even more eager to turn back the pages of time and recall again and again those most joyful memories that shall linger in our hearts forever. Our arrival on October 12, 1944 had been anticipated by many. This was evident as we later found out because Mrs. I-lussey had Main home shining as only it does every four months. The hrst thing on our schedule for the day was chapel which began promptly at six forty-five with Miss Crabb in charge. It was at this first meeting that we found the talented pianist of the group and since then Betty Day has been our maestro. Our first meal together will be remembered by a most dramatic episode. Wliile standing in break- fast line, Coft's knees buckled and she met with the Floor. Could it have been that Van johnson intern or was it the savory odor of the kitchen? ' I3lallowe'en ushered in the Hrst event on our social calendar. This brought to light the less serious side of the intern. Can anyone ever forget Eli Brooks and Beverly Salvo doing the snake dance? What a pair! As time went on, we found our beloved Miss Hall a true friend. Although we must have tried her patience with our bob-bing curls. she stuck with us all the way through Nursing Arts I. It is to her and Miss Bates that we owe our foundation and principles of good nursing. Christmas crept upon us to find us doing eight hour duty. just to make Santa Claus more than a dream forgotten, we had three days vacation. Christmas morning we joined the graduates and older stu- dents on a tour through the hospital singing the ever loved Christmas carols. February heightened our status. Plans great and small revolved in each girl's head. Some of these plans were the making of piebeds, brewing of fantastic ward stories, and changing of furniture so that we might have the best. The latter was to no avail. Mrs. Hussey informed us that each piece of furniture was to be returned to its proper place. Lee Lee and Lou chose midnight to return their dresser. VVhen Miss Crabb investigated the noise she found the dresser suspended between second and third Hoors. It was a shame the entire class had a week's restriction! However, Steadman entertained for the group with her mountaineer jesting and imitations of Loretta. It wasn't long before Miss I-Iall called us together to inform us that she was leaving. It would not be exaggerating the story to say that every girl shed a few tears. To show our love and appreciation to Aunt Lou we gave her a string of pearls and sent her off to New York with the prettiest orchid we found. Then came the night we all dreamed about! VVhat a rush getting shoes polished and our first bibs ironed to perfection! The occasion? We were at last getting that little white cap better known as our dignity. Could we ever forget April 5, 1945? Our first anniversary was celebrated by going out to Coburg's Dairy. VVe had the most hilarious time, and after four hours of fun, we piled into the station wagon and drove back to Roper singing at the top of our voices. Returning from our second vacation in December found some of us venturing to Obstetrics, Pediatrics and the Operating Room. Classes were in full swing again and we had plenty of studying to do, but along with all the work and studies, we had our fun. Welll never forget the day one of our bright classmates asked Miss Malloy for the Daisy Rogin machine, meaning, of course, the Bogan-Davis machine! And girls, remember the time another one of our classmates in the O. R. went donging into the bucket for a lost sponge. Yes, and all scrubbed up too! Oh well, life's little embarrassing moments. In March, we received our first black band in a small ceremony over in Annex A. A Jril found us sa in f OOCllJ e to Ken er, Mac Anderson, Aiken Ma s and man Otl'lC1'S whom . . 21 V Y . Uncle Sam was claiming as lns nephews. Our hearts were low as we welcomed our new interns and residents. It was in july that we decided things were moving too slowly, so after putting our heads together, we set July 5 as the date for a class party. This time it wasn't to be a hen party but a watermelon cutting at the graduate nurses home on Folly Beach. The party and Dr. Upchurch will be remembered by the ex- plosion of the fire cracker in the bus. Summer drifted along with many enjoyable evenings spent in Roper's baseball stadium. We nurses still think we're the best ball players although the Medics have different ideas. Our third and last vacation found many of us going to all points. but to whatever spot, everybody reported a good time. So as we have come to the end of another year and our goal of achievement is so near we have a deep satisfaction in knowing that we have almost completed our training period. Now that goal is taking on a shiny appearance. Never-the-less while we are striving to make the grade, let us not forget to enjoy life and to keep our class spirit, not only during Senior days, but long after parting goodbyes have been said. fifty th: ee ffm'-ff jun I7 s FEBRUARY 1948 MILDRED LUNDY ........ It takes but little time to recall those first homesick nights. Remember? Beginning classes-how hard everyone studied and never a vacant chair could be found in the library, And what about the day we got our uniforms? Of course, hardly a one fitted, but we lost no time in parading them in the dining room at the next meal. And who could forget that night before we were to go on the ward the next morning! Did anyone sleep more than an hour? Perhaps in that one hour and a half spent on duty that morning, we realized just how green our fields were going to be. These and a thousand other personal experiences have made us what we are today and what we all hope to become-intelligent and unselfish as mates in a great profession. The Green Years .... what pen could justly write of them? Surely no more than one backward glance into the past is needed to recall those happy and yet sometimes sad student days. And from our backward glancing we can ever look forward to a new to- morrow filled with hopes and promises that will be fulfilled from the rich experiences we have gained from our Green Years. ,..4 NN! Thank you, too, for the personal favors and friendship shown us. We extend a hand of thanks to Miss McMinn and Mr. Brown, our roving photo- graphers from the photographic laboratory at the Medical College. Many an hour of their free time was spent making and developing pictures and even remaking pictures that this annual would be the year book we had dreamed of. And now to the staff of Walker, Evans and Cogswell, we say thank you for your best and for the courtesies rendered the editorial staff. WVe think Mr. Keller Cogs- well deserves a handshake from each one for his endless efforts to please us when this book was in the making. And hearty thanks to Mr. Altman, the printer, for his advice and instructions in preparing the material for publication. The knowledge and experience that we have gained from these people and many others unnamed has indeed been a rich experience. It has been a great privilege and pleas- ure to serve as editor of this 1947 Tres Anni. And so my staff and I present this book with the hope that it will be a treasured momento of our training days.
