His oricall Many changes have taken place in the Nursing School since its organization in l888 when it was known as the Charleston Training School oi Nursing. At that time the school was located on Queen Street and had a two-year course con- sisting oi not more than ten pupils divided into two classes. ln l905 the Roper Hospital was rebuilt on its present site and the school was incorporated by the State oi South Carolina as the Roper l-lospital Training School tor Nurses. The School con- tinued to progress and in l9l8 the Board ot Commissioners ot Roper l-lospital proposed to the trustees ot the Medical College ot the State ot South Carolina that the School ot Nursing be affiliated with that institution. The proposal was accepted by the College and in l9l9 the school became known as The School ot Nursing ot the Medical College of The State ot South Carolina. Not only has the Nursing School advanced, but the entire hospital as well. ln l887 Riverside lniirmary was established by the City l-lospital Board, and in the early twenties the Children's Ward was equipped by the Women's Auxiliary, the Cbstetrical and Dental Departments were also established, the latter having been discontinued atter a tew years. ln l922 a list ot tull-time instruction tor nurses was organized and the Department ot Nursing Education was formally established in l987. Additional changes have occurred with each passing year. A Communicable Disease Unit and Riverside Annex have re- cently been added to the hospital plant. The school cooperated with the United States Cadet Nurse Corps and trained Cadet Nurses during the emergency ot World War ll. The hospital today is equipped to accommodate 350 patients which ensures ample clinical experiences in Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Cbstetrics, and other phases ot Nursing. The number ot patients receiving treatment annually has increased from approximately l,500 in l897 to over 8,000 today. The latest ad- dition is the portion ot new Roper l-lospital which will be opened lanuary l, l948 and will accommodate l80 additional patients. I O
